To Win Her Hand (A Gentleman's Match #1) by Jen Geigle Johnson

An expert at winning a woman's hand. A woman who cannot be won.

Lord Featherstone has the world on his shoulders. Or at least his world. With two brothers and a failing estate he must make funds somehow. But what happens when he falls for a woman? Will his tactics work when the situation is so close and personal?

Everyone thinks Lady Loveluck is a wealthy widow. What they don't know is that she is on the brink of hiring herself out as a Governess in order to pay for her next meal. The only thing keeping her from employment is a growing reputation as a matchmaker. As long as she never falls for another man, as long as she doesn't allow herself to be fooled into marrying, she will be just fine.

But she never counted on being caught up in the beguiling tactics of London's renowned and not so secret matchmaker for men.

🎜Matchmaker, matchmaker make me a match . . . Find me a find, catch me a catch.🎜  Does anyone know this song from Fiddler On the Roof?  This is the song that kept running through my head throughout this book.  It's now my theme song for this book.

Lord Featherstone and Lady Loveluck are matchmakers of a sort.  They help people fine tune themselves so that they can make a love match.  They help them navigate society and give them confidence.  But then Lord Featherstone finds himself enamored with Lady Loveluck and has to become the matchmaker for himself!  (This makes me laugh because then he is singing my theme song to himself! 😂 )  Lady Loveluck is harder to convince than most women.  And Lord Featherstone isn't the only one vying for her attention.  Competition!!

There is a lot of back and forth in this book.  Both characters trying to sacrifice for the greater good- their clients, mostly.  There is a slow growing awareness and attachment.  It was all very sweet and gentle in nature.  Pure regency.  A fun start to a new series by this author.

This book is also on KU if you have that!

A Tenuous Betrothal (Royal Regency #3) by Jen Geigle Johnson

Rhianna Davies is well-acquainted with heartache after the painful loss of her parents. At the arrival of her ghastly uncle, she is brought even lower: Rhi has been banished from her family’s estate home and must rely on the kindness of her tightly knit Welsh miners for help. Without the protective love of her parents, Rhi has no illusions that hers will be a happy ending—until an addendum to her father’s will arrives in the hands of a prince.

Marc Wilhelm, Prince of Oldenburg, is in Wales with one purpose: to claim his betrothed. A long-ago promise between their fathers forges an indelible link between Rhi and Marc, but there remains just one problem: neither wants to marry a stranger. With no remaining ties to Wales, Rhi agrees to accompany Marc to Oldenburg, where he will forfeit their betrothal so she may have her pick of husbands. But their journey takes them down unexpected paths, from the depths of a Welsh mine to the marriage mart of London to a warm reception in Oldenburg. Rhi and Marc discover that their connection and their challenges run deeper than either anticipated, but whether from their own hesitations or from danger that threatens without, the couple might be thwarted before they can even begin the happily ever after they so richly deserve.

Dear Marc, Prince of Oldenburg,

Have you ever seen The Little Mermaid?  Because there is a song in that show that was on loop in my head as I read your story.  "Yes, you want her.  Look at her, you know you do.  It's possible she wants you too, there is one way to ask her. . . and you don't know why but you're dying to try, you want to kiss the girl."   I felt like Sebastian in your story.

Kiss the girl!!  I get why you held back, well actually, I don't.  I get why YOU think you should've held back, but I don't get it.  Anyone who looks at you two can see clearly that you are meant to be together.  It's all there.  She is beautiful, inside and out.  She is smart, loyal, kind and brave.  Seriously?!  What were you doing?  KISS THE GIRL.

I will say that I admire your kindness.  Rhianna really needed someone to step in and help her and you did it, perfectly.  I loved how you listened to her and respected what she said and what she wanted.  Yes, your loyalty to your country is admirable too.  It is.  It's just, . . . Rhianna.   But you eventually got there.  It took quite the event to get you there, but hallelujah, you got there.  You are so lucky you didn't lose your girl to one of your brothers.

Oh, and one other little thing.  Now that we are such tight friends, I wondered if I could visit your castle?  I promise I won't get in your way at all.  I'll just find a little spot, overlooking the water with a cozy chair and a book.  You won't even know I am there.

Give my best, kindest regards to Rhi.  She is amazing.

Yours sincerely,

Aimee, queen of nothing but a fan of your story and your beautiful book cover.  💙

A Sleigh Ride Kiss (A Christmas Match #2) by Jen Geigle Johnson

A man she disdains and a man she loves. What happens when she finds out they’re the same person?

Odette Goodson lives with her grandmother in the beautiful Cheshire County. This Christmas she wishes for caroling, snow, sleigh rides, plum pudding, and a lit yule log, with friends and neighbors all around. Her matchmaking grandmother wishes for her to marry the Marquis of Wilmington. She’s heard only unflattering things about him. To her grandmother's consternation, Mr. Wardly shows up on a country lane, a man who seems to be everything the Marquis is not.

Henry Wardly, the Marquis of Wilmington, arrives from the East Indies in Cheshire County six months after his mother’s funeral. Mourning her loss, with a new shipping line at stake, and his own estate to salvage, responsibilities in Cheshire county frustrate him and slow his progress. But he cannot help but be jolly at Christmas time particularly after he runs into the lovely Miss Odette Goodson. Things grow complicated when she confuses him for a gentleman farmer and has shown nothing but disdain for the heretofore unknown Marquis.

Grandmother Amelie Laurent Goodson will work her matchmaking magic, but will it be enough to overcome the strong prejudice in Odette’s preconceived notions or the immediacy of Henry’s needs to be in London?

 * Amazon * Goodreads *

Are you ready to start reading Christmas books?  It's a little early for me but you will want to pick this one up, even if you just store it away for a month or so.  It's ever so sweet and will bring all the feelings of good cheer and the spirit of winter and the holidays.

Henry and Odette are great characters.  It was so easy to like them from the very beginning.  I just loved how hard Henry tried to please Odette by paying special attention to her.  It was all the little things.  And it was all Odette from the very beginning for Henry.  Sweet, sweet Henry.  Sweet Odette and a very sweet Christmas romance.

This book is on Kindle Unlimited if you have that.

Song of Salzburg (Romance on the Orient Express #4) by Jen Geigle Johnson

When talented violinist Freya Winter is chosen to take part in a musical celebration alongside some of the best instrumentalists in the world, she is thrilled. Performing in front of royalty is a breathtaking opportunity, but her true motivation for traveling to Salzburg is to fulfill an unlikely dream: to meet and train under the renowned Salzburg Maestro, a master musician shrouded in mystery.

Freya travels aboard the Orient Express to practice with the newly formed orchestra in Salzburg, and nothing can distract her—not her mother’s illness, nor her father’s domineering ways; however, when a handsome passenger becomes a regular fixture on her journeys, Freya feels her focus blurring. Conversation with Erich is easy, and their shared love of music draws them undeniably closer. But even as they open their hearts to each other, the harsh realities of her family life intrude on the future she’s envisioned, and Freya feels her dreams slipping through her fingers, threatening to rob her of everything she cherishes most.

 * Goodreads * Amazon

Ooh, I love books that capture not only my attention and feelings but my senses as well.  I felt like I could hear the music in this story.  Freya's passion for her violin and music was contagious and it really helped me connect with her in new and different ways.  I think music is something everyone can relate to and connect with emotionally and this author does a great job of bringing that element into her book.  So many of my life's memories are connected to music and it was like this for Freya too.

Freya is awesome.  I enjoyed her journey so much- and not just her journey on the Orient Express.  😉  Erich is a great contributor to her journey and I loved discovering him right along with Freya.  It was a great classic love story that felt worthy of a movie.  So, so good.

Peace is tenuous in the small kingdom of Oldenburg, and the looming threat of invasion from Napoleon weighs heavily on the royal family. Their country’s best chance for safety lies in strengthening their alliance with the English. So it is that Prince Hayes Wilhelm finds himself returning to England, where he hopes a prominent duke can help him protect his country.

Lady Elsie longs to make a difference in the world, but spying was not quite what she had in mind. So when her father, the Duke of Shelby, approaches her about keeping a close eye on the visiting crown prince of Oldenburg, she reluctantly agrees. But the outspoken young woman did not anticipate finding in Hayes a man who shares—and respects—her progressive ideas. Their mutual attraction is undeniable, but Elsie cannot forget her charge to spy on the man who is quickly stealing her heart. With the threat of war looming ever closer, Elsie and Hayes must consider carefully whom to trust—before their secrets tear them apart.

 * Amazon * Goodreads *

Hello, Prince Hayes, future king.

It's a pleasure to meet you.  I met your brother in the last book and got a glimpse of your other brothers as well.  There sure are a lot of you!  I'm pretty sure that everyone that meets you loves you.  You have a winning personality and I love your fierce loyalty to your country and people.  Your desire to learn from others is impressive.  Others may doubt you and your intentions, but I never did.  Not once.

I especially loved how you stood up for Elise.  You listened to her and you made her feel seen and heard.  Respected.  That makes you the best kind of man.  Elise is something else, isn't she?  A rare kind of woman in these days but thank goodness for that!  Bucking social norms and forward thinking can only lead women to better places.  Thank you for supporting her in this.

I am pleased to know you and I look forward to getting to know your brothers just as well.  Have fun with your sheep!  I hope they help the people in your country!

Your loyal and humble fan.  I mean, servant.

A Foreign Crown (Royal Regency, #1) by Jen Geigle Johnson + Win A Copy of This Book!

Following a devastating series of misfortunes, Lady Aribella Bardsley has bravely shouldered the responsibilities of her household. But just as the bleakness of her situation threatens to overwhelm her, a summons arrives from the Queen with a providential offer: Aribella’s presence is requested as a lady-in-waiting at the palace.

Prince Layton Wilhelm’s family has clung to their neutrality in the war for far too long. As the youngest of the King of Oldenburg’s eight sons, Layton is determined to prove his worth and is unwilling to turn a blind eye to Napoleon’s encroaching privateers. When Layton embarks on a journey to England, it is for one purpose: to petition the British navy for aid. But when he becomes acquainted with the lovely Lady Aribella, he cannot deny their powerful connection. Amid the intrigues and schemes within the walls of the palace, Layton and Aribella know a future together is impossible—but torn between loyalty and love, will they risk everything to follow their hearts?

What a lovely book.  Very romantic.  I think the cover is lovely too.

I really enjoyed this one and I think one of the main reasons why is because there wasn't a huge misunderstanding or fight between the main characters, driving them apart.  The love was always there but circumstances drove them apart.  I guess that just felt good around my heart.  Both Layton and Aribella are kind and loyal- two of my very favorite characteristics in people.  I loved them both, separately and together.

This whole book felt gentle to me and I think that was another reason I was so attracted to it.  I really had a hard time putting it down.  It had a fairy tale quality to it with castles and a handsome prince.  I would sure love to visit a castle like the one described in this book one day!  I also loved the bits of history woven in with King George and the royal family.

I sure hope we get more stories from this royal family of Wilhelm brothers!  There are so many!

The Earl's Winning Wager (Lords for the Sisters of Sussex #2) by Jen Geigle Johnson

Lord Morley's life will change forever when he wins a game of cards and a family of sisters to go along with it.

Miss Standish in none too pleased to have become the responsibility of yet another Lord, even if he is full of charm and goodness. Her responsibilities are to her sisters first.

With the repairs on the castle moving forward nicely and concerted efforts in a season in Bath made to find suitors for them all, Miss Standish and Lord Morley must determine where duty stops and matters of the heart take over.

 * Amazon * Goodreads *

What a sweet story!  Lord Morley and Miss Standish were perfectly suited for each other and were both kind, good people.  They were easy to like and easy to root for.  I think one of the the things I loved best about Morley was the way he viewed June's sisters as his own.  His care and concern for them was so endearing.  I loved him for that alone.  Well, and for his good manners.  He felt like all that was gentlemanly and good.

I love this family of Standish sisters living in a castle!  They all have personality and it will be fun to follow each of their stories in this series.

Clean regency romance.  Kissing.

His Lady in Hiding by Jen Geigle Johnson

Lady Elizabeth Davenport is desperate. Her hand in marriage has been offered to the highest bidder, a distressing proposition in and of itself but made all the more repulsive when she meets her father’s first choice for her hand: Lord Pinweather. When her parents refuse to hear her pleas, Liz is forced to take drastic measures—she will impersonate her maid and begin anew in America on her own terms.

Once on board the ship to America, another passenger, Lord Barton, almost immediately discovers her true status as a noble. After listening to Liz’s highly modified version of her life and her plans to begin again, Barton has compassion on her and teaches her how to abandon her noble mannerisms. Upon disembarking, however, Barton’s generous spirit quickly dampens when he discovers Liz has indeed found work—as his own head housekeeper. Suddenly, the tender feelings they hid from each other on the ship are inescapable, but their difference in station makes romance impossible. As misunderstandings abound and a shocking character from Liz’s past looms, she knows she can’t hide her true identity forever. But as her deception begins to unravel, will her charade cost her the man she loves?

I've been looking forward to reading this book because I've been hearing good things about it.  I'm glad a finally got to sit down and read it for myself.

I love the way this book progressed and the many places it took me.  I went from England, on a boat to America and back again.  There were a lot of characters in this book but I never felt overwhelmed or confused.  The author did a great job of introducing characters in a way that felt easy and natural.  I had a clear vision of everyone and that always feels good as a reader.  I liked Elizabeth so much.  And Barton.  But mostly Elizabeth.  😊  She is someone I would like to be friends with.  Her kindness drew people to her and in the end it was that kindness that saved her because those people rallied around her.  I loved that.

This was a good diversion for me this week and I enjoyed the journey of Lady Elizabeth very much.

A Lady's Maid by Jen Geigle Johnson + Win This Book!

Molly O’Malley, lady’s maid to the progressive Lady Amanda Halloway, is determined to continue the life’s work of her lost love, killed in the Peterloo Massacre. But when her efforts and a trip to Lady Halloway’s charitable orphanage culminate in her own abduction, Molly’s eyes are opened to the horrifying crimes transpiring in the city’s slums. Despite the risks, she broadens her mission and is drawn ever closer to the peril all around them.

Thomas Flaherty, a footman in the Halloway household, has been with Molly from the beginning, but he fears she will never trust him with her heart. Even though her cause and happiness are of foremost importance to him, his loyal patience is tested by the fears that keep her at a distance. But with their safety on the line, Thomas is resolved to sacrifice everything for the woman he loves.

Risking their lives and their love, Molly and Thomas and a team of nobles on their side will stop at nothing to empower the powerless, no matter the personal cost.

Jen Geigle Johnson has crafted a beautiful story, bringing to light the early days of women's suffrage and the oppressive conditions in the more poverty stricken areas of England.  She built the story around characters I can relate to and root for making it easy to fall into this historical fiction.

The story contains a host of characters with Molly and Lady Amanda being the center of all that is happening.  One of those revolving around these two is the shy and reserved Lady Chloe who is just beginning to find the power of her own voice.  One of my favorite lines comes from her, "Because my voice is my own.  I am a unique and valued person in my own right, and I deserve to have a say in the process of our government and in who represents me."

While the book's main message and theme is the women's suffrage movement, there is also sweet romance, a bit of danger and intrigue.  This book reminded me of all the brave women who desired something more and weren't afraid to take a stand and work hard to change the ways of a society of repression.  It made me proud to be a woman.  It also made me especially grateful for the good men through time who have supported and championed the women in their lives- wives, mothers, sisters and daughters.  Many of those men types of men were represented well in this book.  The world needs good women and men, working together to bring about better lives for all.

This was a very enjoyable and enlightening read.  I appreciate the amount of research and time the author took to represent the time and people accurately.  I'm looking forward to the next book, set to release next year!

Mistletoe Memories by Jen Geigle Johnson

Francie and Gerard have been friends since childhood, but their friendship ended when she declined his heartfelt proposal of marriage. However, when her interactions with Gerard's holiday houseguests provoke in Francie unexpected jealousy, she realizes she must fight for Gerard's affections or risk losing him forever.

Ooh, if you are looking for Christmas romance, you don't want to miss this collection!  All four of these novellas are utterly charming.  I loved how in each one of them, the romance came as a surprise and changed the feeling of melancholy to a feeling of joy and happiness.  It was so satisfying!  What a great bunch of authors!

The Christmas/holiday/winter spirit is strong in these stories.  There is ice skating, caroling, sledding, yule logs, mistletoe, dancing, Christmas decorating and even plum pudding!  This book will definitely get you feeling the holiday spirit and aren't holiday romances just extra magical?  I think so.  <sigh>

Tabitha's Folly (Regency House Party: Somerstone #5) by Jen Geigle Johnson + $25 Giveaway

Tabitha's Folly is one of Five books all set at the same Regency House Party Series. While each is a standalone story, watch our characters mingle together with others from the books in the series. The stories can be read in any order.

Lady Tabitha Easton recklessly dodges four over-protective brothers while trying to gain attention from the man who holds her heart. She has many choices of suitors, and with Henry as disinterested as ever, she turns to what is wholly forbidden, an irresistibly handsome footman. While their friendship grows, her trust in him increases while her hurt and doubt in her childhood love and friend pushes her away from all she's ever known as family.

When Lord Henry Courtenay discovers a new attraction to his childhood friend, his role as one of her chaperones at the house party becomes near impossible. Irrationally defensive about any potential suitors and seeking time alone with the enticing Tabby, maintaining friendship with her brothers proves more difficult than he ever imagined. His task becomes all the more difficult when she refuses to understand his growing attraction and often finds herself in almost compromising situations.

When Tabitha's choices might lead her to danger, and doubt and distrust are high, Henry must prove himself or lose her forever.

 * Amazon * Goodreads

How fun is this idea of five books by five different authors, all with characters set at the same Regency House Party?!  I must admit that I haven't read any of the other books, but I am anxious to now that I have read this one.  You can check out the whole series HERE.

Tabitha is definitely a sweet yet somewhat naive young lady.  She sometimes acts without thinking and that gets her into a wee bit of trouble.  With a whole brood of brothers trailing her around constantly, you would think trouble would be hard to come by but not for Tabitha.  Let's just say her fall into the river may have been her best bit of trouble!

This story is short and I was so surprised when I got to the end.  I wasn't quite ready for it to be over.   Very enjoyable!

Scarlet by Jen Geigle Johnson + $25 and Book Giveaway!

The roads in and out of Paris are heavily guarded, but the dead have easy passage out of the city. A ragged old woman transports the coffins of the most recent victims of the guillotine and is waved on unimpeded. Later, the same crone watches five French aristocrats step out of their coffins unscathed. Not beheaded but spirited away to safety by that most elusive of spies: the Pimpernel. Or, as she's known in polite society, Lady Scarlet Cavendish.

When not assuming her secret identity as a hero of the French Revolution, Scarlet presents herself as a fashionable, featherbrained young widow flitting about London. In truth, this façade is merely a diversion designed to conceal her clandestine work in France. Among members of the doomed French aristocracy, the Pimpernel is renowned for her bravery and cunning. But when tasked with rescuing handsome Comte Matteo Durand, she faces an unprecedented challenge: she is falling in love with the man. If ever there were a time to keep her head, it is now— because in a world brimming with intrigue, she is not the only one harboring secrets. And if Scarlet doesn't take care, Madame la Guillotine may finally catch up with the Pimpernel.

The French Revolution.  Such a horrible, awful, bloody time in French history.  It's honestly not my favorite time in history to read about but I thought this story was well balanced and didn't dwell in the beheading place too much or too long.  But still.  The moments it did were awful, and dark, and so, so sad.

The story builds continually- both in plot and with the characters.  By the time I got to the last third of the book, I was almost speed reading because I was so desperate to know how it would all work out!  I had to constantly tell myself to slow down.

Ooh boy, Matteo was swoony!  His silver tongue said the prettiest words to Scarlet.  I loved his devotion to her.  He was the happiest part of the story for me.

I really enjoyed my time in this book.  It definitely kept my attention and I was invested in all parts of it.
