Seven at Sea: Why a New York City Family Cast Off Convention for a Life-Changing Year on a Sailboat by Erik Orton, Emily Orton

Working the night shift as a temp in a high-rise cubicle, Erik Orton knew something had to change. He felt the responsibility of providing for his wife and their five children—the youngest with Down syndrome—but craved a life that offered more than just surviving.

Watching the sailboats on the Hudson River during his sunset dinner breaks, Erik dared to dream. What would it be like to leave the hustle of the city and instead spend a year on a sailboat, somewhere beautiful, as a family? Despite having no sailing experience, his wife Emily’s phobia of deep water, and already stretching every dollar to pay rent and buy groceries, the family of seven turned their excuses into reasons and their fears into motivation. Sure, they would miss their friends, they could go broke, they could get injured or die. Worst of all, they could humiliate themselves by trying something audacious and failing. But the little time they still had together as a family, before their oldest daughter left for college, was drifting away. The Ortons cast off the life they knew to begin an uncertain journey of 5,000 miles between New York City and the Caribbean, ultimately arriving at a new place within themselves.

A portrait of a captivating and resilient family and a celebration of the courage it takes to head for something over the horizon, this is a deeply compelling story—told alternately by Erik and Emily—for all those who dream of leaving routine in their wake.

I have never wanted to live on a boat.  Ever.  And after reading this book?  I'm even more convinced that I would never, ever want to live on a boat.  But, it takes all kinds of people to make this world go around and I like reading about people who are different than me, who have different dreams and go for them.

This book is told from alternating perspectives of both authors, Erik and Emily Orton.  I'm really glad it was that way because it was Emily's insights that really connected me to this story.  Maybe that's because I am a woman?  A wife?  A mother?  I'm not sure but one thing I do know is that Emily is a saint among women.  She supported her husband's dream and helped bring it to fruition.  I mean, five kids on a boat?  Doing school and balancing chores, meals and everything else?  She was the glue that held everything together and I really came away from the book with a healthy admiration for her.

The pacing of this book is slow, but there were interesting things that kept me going.  I think the Ortons are a great of example of daring to dream and making those dreams become reality.  My dreams may not be the same as theirs, but I love the reminder that with planning, hard work and determination, dreams can come true.

Unshattered: Overcoming Tragedy and Choosing a Beautiful Life by Carol J. Decker, Stacey L. Nash

On June 10, 2008, Carol Decker walked through the hospital doors a healthy woman with flu-like symptoms and early labor contractions. Three months later, she returned home a blind, triple-amputee struggling to bond with a daughter she would never see.

Unshattered: Choosing a Beautiful Life after Unspeakable Tragedy recounts Carol's fight for survival against sepsis and its life-shattering complications. From excruciating skin grafts to learning how to function in daily life without lower legs, a left hand, and her sight, Carol takes us on a personal and raw, yet inspiring journey. She travels through the darkness of trauma, anxiety, and depression to arrive, literally, at the peak of a mountain with a heart full of gratitude and love. More than a story of triumph over tragedy, the book offers inspiring life-lessons and insights which can help readers to do more than endure unimaginable pain and darkness in their own lives. This book can give them the perspective and strength to pick up the pieces of their own tragedies and choose a life of healing, purpose, and joy--a beautiful life.

Occasionally I love to pick up books about real people who have endured intense hardships and persevered, overcome.  It's always amazing to me how resilient the human spirit can be.  Reading books like this one restores my faith in humanity.  There really are so many good people out there, working hard to help other people and extending kindness in times of trouble.  Mostly it helps me put life back into perspective and remember the things that are most important.  I never want to take the good things and blessings in my life for granted.

Obviously, Carol Decker is a miracle.  She survived something few people do.  I am in awe of her persistence and how she has transformed something horrible into something beautiful.  Now she shares what she has learned with others and many lives are blessed by her courage and determination.  I am glad I picked this book up.  I feel better for reading it and that's one of the great things about books.  They fill so many different roles in life.  Sometimes I read to escape and be entertained, sometimes I read to learn something new.  Sometimes I read to be inspired by the triumphs of other people and I always read with the hopes of being a better person when I'm done.  Mission accomplished here.

A Cookbook Review: Simplify Supper by Krista Numbers

From her grandfather Salvatore Granato's roots in Southern Italy to the legacy of her family's beloved Italian deli in the heart of Salt Lake City, Krista Numbers has a deep-seated love for good food. In Simplify Supper, this busy wife and mother proves that simple can be satisfying as she dishes up dozens of delectable dinners. From some of her family's best-loved Italian meals to fast feasts with an international flair, discover quick comfort foods you'll want at the heart of your dinner table.

I love looking through new cookbooks.  This one was especially fantastic because every single recipe has a full page picture to go with it.  I'm a visual girl so I love being able to see what the recipe is describing.  The pictures in this book made me want to start cooking and that's something because if I'm being completely honest, I hate cooking.  It's a chore for me, not a pleasure.  So, yay! for this recipe book for inspiring me to cook!  My family will be so happy.  :)

My first recipe will be the marina sauce.  (I just got this book a couple days ago and haven't had a chance to try out any recipes yet)  This recipe looks so easy and sounds delish!  I love the tips included that suggest doubling the recipe and then freezing some for quick use with another meal.  Now that's my kind of cooking!

There are several recipes that include this marina sauce, like the Classic Chicken Parmesan that I will be trying out as well.  I'm also going to try the Cilantro Lime Rice and the Mini Wanton Tacos.  Yum!

This book includes definitions, tips for cooking, and some recipes even have step by step instructions with pictures.  That's handy for a girl like me!  Oh and there are little quotes sprinkled throughout as well.  I loved those!  Here's one:

"One cannot think well, love well, sleep well if one hasn't eaten well."  Virginia Wolf

Here's to feeding our people (and ourselves) well!

The Berlin Candy Bomber by Gail S. Halvorsen

The Berlin Candy Bomber is a love story-how two sticks of gum and one man's kindness to the children of a vanquished enemy grew into an epic of goodwill spanning the globe-touching the hearts of millions in both Germany and America.

In June 1948, Russia laid siege to Berlin, cutting off the flow of food and supplies over highways into the city. More than two million people faced economic collapse and starvation. The Americans, English, and French began a massive airlift to bring sustenance to the city and to thwart the Russian siege.

Gail Halvorsen was one of hundreds of U.S. pilots involved in the airlift. While in Berlin, he met a group of children standing by the airport watching the incoming planes. Though they hadn't asked for candy, he was impressed to share with them the two sticks of gum he had in his possession. Seeing how thrilled they were by this gesture, he promised to drop more candy to them the next time he flew to the area.

True to his word, as he flew in the next day, he wiggled the wings of his plane to identify himself, then dropped several small bundles of candy using parachutes crafted from handkerchiefs to slow their fall. Local newspapers picked up the story. Suddenly, letters addressed to "Uncle Wiggly Wings" began to arrive as the children requested candy drops in other areas of the city.

Enthusiasm spread to America, and candy contributions came from all across the country. Within weeks candy manufacturers began donating candy by the boxcar.

In May 1949, the highway blockade ended, and the airlift ended in September. But the story of Uncle Wiggly Wings and the candy-filled parachutes lives on-a symbol of human charity.

Sometimes you read books to escape from reality and go someplace far, far away.  Sometimes you read books to learn something new.  Sometimes you read books to be inspired.  This book gave me all the previous mentioned things plus more.
I love reading stories about ordinary people who do extraordinary things.  These things come about because people like Gail Halvorsen choose kindness when a situation is placed before them.  Gail's kindness led to more kindness.  People saw his kindness and wanted to be a part of it.  From there it ballooned into something grand that involved people all over the world.  All because one man extended a kindness one day to a few children who desperately needed some kindness and care.  I love that.
Gail Halvorsen has roots right where I live today.  It was fun to read of his early years in Bear River Valley.  I could imagine him flying right over my house as he trained to be a pilot.  My kids attend the same high school he attended.  It's a small world after all.
I learned more about the events and details leading up to Gail Halvorsen's part in the war efforts and about his life.  I loved all the pictures in the book.  They really helped give me a sense of how things were.  There were lots of pictures!  This book is a great reminder to me that kindness matters.  You never know when a kind act can change the life of someone else.  Kindness is contagious.  People respond to kindness.  Kindness matters.  A lot.
I am grateful for people like Gail Halvorsen.  I'm grateful for their examples that inspire me to be better and do better.  I pay honor Uncle Wiggly Wings and I thank him for telling his story.  I loved it.

Amazing Hairstyles from Easy to Elegant by Becky Porter

Tired of bad hair days? Popular hairstyle blogger Becky Porter teaches you the basics of braids, buns, and twists, and helps you combine them to create amazing hairstyles for any occasion. Go from drab to fab at any age with the easy, step-by-step tutorials in this essential guide.

I think it's important to note first that I am not a very talented hair stylest.  I have two girls and really, I have only mastered the very basics.  I have always wanted to try some fancier things though and this book gave me just the nudge and help that I needed.

I love the easy to understand instructions and the pictures too.  When I am learning to do things, it's so much easier for me to have a book or actual written instructions in front of me.  With this book, I don't have to pause or stop a video and I don't have to take my computer or tablet into the bathroom.  I like that my girls can read me these instructions as I go too.

My oldest daughter even tried some of the fancier braids herself and she did an awesome job!

This book is awesome.  I'm so glad to have it in my house.  I think it's a book that will be used over and over.  I'm envisioning some fancy styles for junior prom right now!

This would also be a fun gift for any girl along with some bobby pins and other hair tools this book recommends.  I actually think I'm going to do this for my nieces!

You can purchase this book at Amazon and Cedar Fort.

My thanks to Cedar Fort for sending me this book for review.

Stars, Stockings and Shepherds by Shersta Chabot, Illustrated by Corey Egbert

Do you know the symbolism behind evergreens, sheep, or the color red? This adorably illustrated picture book teaches the meanings behind 24 Christmastime objects and is the perfect gift for any children, parents, or grandparents on your list. Make your family’s holiday season one to remember with this inspiring reminder of the gospel roots behind our treasured Christmas traditions.

I love all the symbolism that surrounds Christmas.  This book does such a great job of explaining the symbols in a way that children will understand.  The pictures are perfect- colorful and happy.  I'm having visions of curling up on the couch with a snuggy blanket and the little ones close, sharing a few precious minutes of quiet time to think of and remember Jesus Christ, whose birth and life we celebrate at Christmastime.

I loved this book.  I wish I would have had it when my kids were little!  I had a tradition when my kids were little of wrapping up all my children's Christmas books and putting them in a basket.  The kids unwrapped one book every day before Christmas and we read it together.  As my collection grew, we were able to start earlier and earlier in December.  It was a fun tradition and one I hope to start up again when I have grandchildren!  This will be a fantastic addition to my Christmas book collection.

Another thought I had was wrapping up each symbol from the book and letting the kids open it and read about the symbol for the day.  There is 24 in this book which would be the perfect countdown to Christmas.  If only my kids were younger!!  :)

Focused: Keeping Your Life on Track, One Choice at a Time by Noelle Pikus Pace

In her first book, Olympic silver medalist Noelle Pikus-Pace shares ten vital lessons that have been instrumental to her success—in sports and in life. From overcoming devastating injuries to pursuing her dreams despite feelings of inadequacy and loneliness to maintaining her values in the face of extreme pressure, Noelle tells of heartbreak and triumph in a warm, conversational style as she shares insights to help others focus on the right priorities and find the faith to stay strong. With dozens of full-color photographs, motivating observations, and soul-searching reflections, chapters such as "You Always Have a Choice," "Dare to Stand Alone," and "The World Is Watching" offer a unique perspective for readers of all ages as they strive to stay on track the challenges and opportunities of everyday life.

I love reading books that inspire me to be better.  I also love reading about people who have been in the world's spotlight and stood out for their perseverance, optimism and strength of character.  This is one of those kind of books.

Noelle is an athlete through and through.  She has the heart of an athlete.  In this book Noelle not only shares her experiences but what her experiences taught her.  I love the way that Noelle has taken every hard experience and used it to become better and stronger.  Her positive attitude and outlook really make this book stand out.

One of the things I enjoyed about this book was the conversational approach.  I really felt like I was hanging with Noelle and she was just telling me about things.  The book doesn't come off as "I'm better than you".  It felt like a friend giving encouragement and support because she knows all about dealing with tough things.

I loved the inspirations quotes and pictures sprinkled throughout this book.  Even the font changes made this book so appealing.  The messages found in this book can be applied to everyone.  They are based on faith and are full of optimism and strength.  It's all about choices and we make thousands of choices every day.  Where will our choices lead us?  We always have a choice.

I really hope I can convince my teenage daughter to read "Focused".  There are so many words of wisdom that she could benefit from.

I am so glad I had the opportunity to read and review this book.  I am a better me for having read it.  My thanks to Deseret Book for allowing me the privilege.

The Pizza Trap by Gabrielle Welch

Junk food is everywhere: at school, at the ball field, at the mall -- even at your dinner table. Today, more and more American children are suffering from conditions that were once reserved for adults: obesity, diabetes, coronary artery disease and hypertension. And unhealthy eating the primary cause. It may seem like a battle that can't be won, but you can get your kids off junk food and set them on a lifelong path to healthy eating and wellness. As a Nutritional Consultant and mother of three, author Gabrielle Welch offers easy, practical and fun ways to educate and empower your kids to eat right. The Pizza Trap is a guide for every parent. Gabrielle's simple tips will help you experience less mealtime struggles and discover new ways to eat healthy on the go.

I should never have agreed to do this review.  The blurb makes this book seem like it offers "easy, practical and fun" ideas for healthier eating.  And, at some points it does offer that.  The thing is, so much of this book is telling you how awful so many things are to eat, using scare tactics and guilt methods.  "Do you want your kids to be one of those people?"  (speaking of people who suffer from depression, because they eat the wrong things, of course) That really gets my shakles up.  I did not like this book at all.  It was all in the presentation and approach.

I actually wrote a whole page of reaction to this book but there is no point in arguing the points I did and did not agree with.  I've read plenty of books and magazines about eating healthier and changing mealtime habits and the bottom line is that this book is not one I would recommend to anyone.  I just did not like it.

*I was offered this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Bible Bands: Create Your Own Faith-Based Rubber Band Jewelry by Katreina Eden

Rubber band jewelry is the hottest new craze, and now you can try these new designs! Based on scriptures from the Bible, these projects are easy to follow and fun to wear. Show your faith and inspire others with the uplifting jewelry found in Bible Bands.

My daugther is really into making these rubber band jewelry creations.  She loves to experiment and create her own and she loves new ideas for bracelets.  When I saw this book up for tour I jumped right on it because I knew this would be perfect for her to help me review.

My daughter just turned 12, which I think is important to note.  She read the instructions and made the bracelets completely by herself.  I have no idea about making rubber band jewelry so it was all on her.

The instructions were easy to follow and my daughter had no problem with any of the bracelets she attempted to make.  A couple of the bracelets required two looms and we only have one so she was unable to make those.

My favorite bracelet was "God Created This Beautiful World For Me"

Her favorite one to make was "One With God"

And here are some of the others she made:

I think this would be a perfect book to give as a gift for anyone who loves making rubber band jewelry.  Christmas will be here before you know it!  This book is Christian based and takes themes from the bible to go with this jewelry.

You can purchase this book at Cedar Fort or Amazon.

This week is National Suicide Prevention Week.  It's a cause that needs attention and support.  In honor of National Suicide Prevention Week, I am reviewing this book, "Hope After Suicide".  This is Wendy Parmley's story of survival after her mother violently took her life.  She was only 12 years old at the time and the oldest of five children in her family- the youngest being just a baby.

It takes courage to share a story such as this.  There is so much emotion, sadness and trauma that accompanies those left behind when a loved one commits suicide.  It's heartbreaking.  Wendy's account will take you through her thoughts and feelings as a young girl and as a grown woman as she attempts to seek help and healing.  Books such as this are important.  They help bring awareness, compassion and education to everyone.

It's so important that we listen to each other and talk about suicide.  There are so many people that need our help.  We can save lives by listening and talking.  We can save lives by knowing the warning signs and educating ourselves.  There is help.  There is hope.  Let's take care of each other by providing that hope and help.  If you are feeling hopeless, please talk to someone.

Wendy Parmley suffered a disabling bike accident in September 2011.  Unable to return to her 20 year nursing career because of the continued effects of her injuries, Wendy began the slow and painful penning of her angel mother’s story and Wendy’s healing journey following her mom’s suicide death.  Wendy’s mom took her own life when just 31 years old, leaving behind her husband of thirteen years and their five young children.

Wendy has long advocated for suicide prevention and has participated on various professional and community based groups dedicated to that end.  She also recognizes the need to unashamedly support those who must continue to live in the painful aftermath of a loved one’s suicide and passionately lends her voice to that cause.

Prior to her bike accident, Wendy worked in nursing leadership for 14 years, earning her MBA degree from Brigham Young University in 2007.  Despite her continued limitations, Wendy is grateful to spend more time with the love of her life, her husband Mark.  She is ever grateful for his support and the support of their three married sons and their wives, their amazing daughter, and their beautiful two grandchildren who fill their life with sunshine.

Happiness is a Habit: Simple Daily Rituals that Increase Energy, Improve Energy, Improve Well Being, and Add Joy to Every Day by Michele Phillips

Renovate the rhythm of your life to create a healthier, happier you! Forget superficial fixes like fad diets or shopping sprees and instead learn how implementing simple daily habits like journaling, juicing, and unplugging electronics can improve your quality of life. The confidence, vitality, and joy that you deserve are just a habit away!

Every now and then I enjoy reading a non-fiction or self help sort of book.  This book sounded like a winner because who doesn't want to be happier?  Making happiness a habit?  Yeah, that sounds good to me.  A happier start to a new year.  I don't really make New Year's resolutions but I am a goal oriented girl and making a goal to achieve happier habits sounds perfect.

What I like about this book is that you know right up front that this will take time and work.  Habits are not formed over night.  The author even recommends that you pick one habit and do it for 90 days.  Just one at a time.  That way you are not overwhelmed and you give the new happy habit a chance to really become a part of who you are.  Happiness is a choice.  Some have to work harder at it than others, I think, but everyone benefits from having a happier person around.

I can really get behind a lot of these happy habit ideas.  Not all of them suit me and my exact situation, but a lot of them do.  Or, the ideas can be modified to work for me.  Many of them I'm already doing in some form or another.  It's really all about finding things that improve your quality of life and how you interact with others.

A few of my favorite habit ideas were "Give Smiles", "Go Outside", "Do Something Kind", "Make Time for Recovery and Refueling" and "Say Yes to Adventure and Leave Your Comfort Zone".

There is really plenty of advice to be had in this book.  Many habits seemed repetitive to me and I think could have been condensed into one but overall there are just a lot of good ideas here.  I enjoyed reading through this book.  I am going to be implementing many of these good habits over the next year.  I think I'll start with "Drink Water".  I do drink water but not nearly enough and I need to do better.  So there you have it.  My first happy habit.

You can find Happiness is a Habit at Amazon.

Christmas from Heaven: The True Story of the Berlin Candy Bomber

"From little things come big things," Gail Halvorsen remembered his father saying. As a twenty-seven-year-old American pilot, Brother Halvorsen's job was to airdrop much-needed food and supplies to the people of West Berlin in the aftermath of World War II. But it was his simple gift of two sticks of gum that launched an extraordinary humanitarian endeavor and earned him the nickname "The Candy Bomber." Each day as hundreds of small white parachutes delivered treats to the children of West Germany, the wounds of war began to heal. "Operation Little Vittles" captured the imagination of people everywhere, bringing the spirit of Christmas to a world in need of peace and hope. Famed broadcast journalist and author Tom Brokaw brings this remarkable true story to life in a stunning live performance with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, captured on the accompanying DVD.  Also included in the book is a template and directions for creating
your own "Candy Bomber" parachutes.

I'm so, so happy to share this book with you today because I love this story.  Why?  Because it's a story of hope, healing and love.

This is a true story set during WWII.  Gail Halvorsen was serving in the US Air Force as a pilot.  What started out as a small act of kindness by one man spread into the hearts of people all around him until it became something great and monumental.  It touched the hearts of so many people then and it touches my heart today.

I love how this book captures not only the setting of the book but the feelings as well.  The illustrations are beautiful and I love the real pictures sprinkled throughout the book.  It really gave it that sense of realness, of knowing it actually happened.  I love true stories of people who take what life has given them (even when it's hard) and turn it into something better.  It's inspiring and fills me with hope.

This book is so beautiful.  I really can't say enough good about it.  It comes with a DVD so you can watch the original presentation of this fantastic story.  Tom Brokaw tells this story in a way only Tom Brokaw can.  Combine this with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir singing and you have one amazing performance.  This is perfect to share with your family during the holiday season.  I feel so lucky to have it to share with my family.  I love Deseret Book for putting out such awesome literature and for allowing me to review for them.

Tom Brokaw, Narrator

You can purchase this book HERE.

AND, as if that weren't enough I have one more little thing to share with you today.  It's another thing put out by Deseret Book that I just adore.

These little ornaments are my favorite.  There are 12 stars, each with a different name or title for Jesus Christ found in the Bible.  On the back of the box are the scripture references so you can see where the names are found.  I am going to use these as part of a countdown to Christmas.  The twelve days leading up to Christmas will find us adding one ornament a day to the tree.  This will be the perfect way to bring the focus back to Christ a little and still give the kids something daily to look forward to.  These ornaments are so sweet.  They fit right into the palm of your hand and are sturdy enough for even the littlest of hands.  I love them.  You can find the link for purchase HERE.

A Light in Dark Places

  light in dark
A Light in Dark Places In December, 2009, Susan Cox Powell was reported missing from her home in West Valley City, Utah. As law enforcement tried to piece together what had happened to Susan, her husband, Josh Powell, became the only person of interest in the case. For Jennifer Graves, Josh’s sister, the nightmare started long before Susan’s disappearance. From her experiences growing up in the Powell family to the terrifying moment when she first started to believe her brother was a killer, she relied on her faith to stay strong. She devoted herself to the safety of Susan’s boys, Charlie and Braden, whom she hoped to be able to raise as her own. When the boys were murdered by their father in February, 2012, Jennifer was more than devastated, but she had to believe there was a reason for it all—including the deaths of her beloved nephews. In A Light In Dark Places, Jennifer shares her struggles and her triumphs. In coming to terms with such tragedy she finally was able to embrace the truth that we all have the power to choose our own path—and there is always hope, no matter how dark things may seem.

I knew going into this book that it was going to be hard to read.  So emotional and such disturbing events.  I actually debated for quite awhile before committing to review this because I just wasn't sure I wanted to delve into this.  It's almost like an accident on the freeway or something where you don't want to see but you just can't look away.

I am really glad I read this book though.  I have such admiration for Jennifer Graves and what she is trying to accomplish by writing this book.  The things she has been through are so heart wrenching.  So, so sad.  But she is pushing forward.  She has found light in all the darkness that surrounded her and now she is trying to tell a story that could save others from the same fate.

Reading this book was hard.  It made me sad and it also made me angry.  Nobody should have to endure abuse in any form.  It takes bravery to tell this kind of story.  It's so personal and so devastating.  Jennifer Graves was raised in a twisted home full of darkness but she was able to break the cycle and rise above it.  Her beautiful family is a testament to her and her husband that cycles can be broken and one person can make a difference.

Jennifer is speaking out for the voices that no longer can.  She is telling her story to help those who may be suffering similar things.  Her message is clear.  There is hope.  There is help.  Please get help before it's too late.

I feel like I walk away from this book with a better understanding.  I walk away with a greater appreciation for the husband and family that I have, determined to never take that for granted.  I walk away with more compassion and empathy and hopefully knowledge that can help me if the day ever comes that I need it.

May God bless you, Jennifer Graves, and your family.  Thank you for sharing your message with me.  I won't forget.

Confessions of a Cereal Mother by Rachel McClellan

In this humorous memoir you’ll discover several mind-saving rules, which include:

- Don’t throw your pregnancy test away before the full three minutes is up.

- Unless there is a rush on the grocery store pending a zombie-virus outbreak, never take your kids shopping.

- If your toddler is going to chew on a Band-Aid, hope it’s one found inside the community swimming pools chlorinated pool and not one found in their locker room.

- Never throw up in a cookie sheet.

- Things can always get worse. You could discover your child playing with a used tampon applicator. It’s not a whistle, sweetie.

- And most importantly, the moment one of your children is seriously ill, forget about everything else. You have the greatest honor in the world – being a Mom.

When I read the blurb for this book I just knew I would love it.  That's because all of those things have been me in some variation or another.  Vomit, poop, tampons, shopping with kids... oh, the stories I could tell.  I feel like if Rachel and I sat down and compared and shared stories, we would be instant friends.

Well, except that I've never thrown up in a cookie sheet.  She gets the gold star for that one.  :)  Oh, and the whole strip down and jump on the couch thing?  Another gold star for Rachel.

If you are a mother you are going to relate to this book.  Life with kids can be insane.  Draining.  Emotional.  Disgusting.  Hard.  Stressful.  Funny.  Sweet.

I love how this book starts off so funny.  I was literally simultaneously laughing and gagging in disgust.  Reliving my own memories, I guess.

Then I am brought to another place where I relate to the angry monster mom who sometimes (more often than I want it to) comes out.

And then I am taken to the place where everything changes because my child is in a place where life is no longer taken for granted.  Hospitals, MRI's, needles (so many needles) and a very sad baby that is hurting and I am left helpless.  Yup.  I've been there.  I still have to go there on occasion and it always hurts.

But, that's what being a mom is.  Right?  I wouldn't trade it.  (well, in this minute I wouldn't trade it.  Wait until the kids come home from school and I might change my mind.)

This book is so easy to read and so easy to relate to.  It sure is nice to know I'm not alone in the craziness that is motherhood.  Thanks Rachel for letting me read and review your book.  I loved it.

Living in the Light by Lacy West

Living in the Light provides readers with step-by-step methods to overcome depression and anxiety. It offers solutions through a combination of cognitive techniques and gospel-centered principles that will empower readers with the ability to regain their peace and happiness through eliminating all aspects of darkness from their life, embracing a life full of light.
I think we all have experience with depression and anxiety, whether it's our self or someone we care about.  It's a very real and often debilitating illness.

The second part of this title is "How to fight the darkness of depression and anxiety."  Now, I am not usually a depressed person.  I get discouraged but I really don't stay that way for too long.  No matter if you are the depressed person or you know someone who suffers from this illness, this book is a great wealth of information.  It provides so many explanations of the why's and how's of depression along with excellent tried and true ways to help.  Awesome information to tuck in your back pocket

I especially loved the section on how changing the way we think will change the way we feel.  I know this sounds easy but I learned so much and I know this isn't an easy task.  This information can benefit anyone, depressed or not.  I'm planning on putting a lot of these ideas into practice.

My daughter has some rough bouts with depression and I am exciting about sharing this with her.  My only regret is that I only have this book in ebook form.  I'm going to have to go out and buy this book because I just think it's such a great book to have on my book shelf.  I'm looking forward to reading through this book with her and hopefully making her life easier and happier one step at a time.

One of the draws for me is that this book incorporates religious messages from the LDS faith along with scripture references.  It filled me with light and good feelings and I loved it.  I'm so glad I had the chance to read this book.

You can purchase Living in the Light at Amazon  and Barnes and Noble .

A Hard Act to Follow: Blog Tour and Giveaway

A Hard Act to Follow by Henry Bushkin

"A Hard Act to Follow," is a non-fiction literary account of Henry Bushkin's tenure as Johnny Carson's lawyer, business partner, and friend.  The book gives genuine insight into the 'Carson behind Johnny' with candid personal vignettes about the two, during the rollicking years when Johnny was the undisputed king of television.  This is an engaging, eye-opening, anecdote-packed story about a young lawyer and his client, one of the biggest celebrities in the country.  This funny, unfiltered account gives readers a look at the Johnny Carson that none but a select few really knew.

“A Hard Act to Follow” by Henry Bushkin provides a stirring account into Johnny Carson’s world—as told by Carson’s closest confidant.
The New Yorker article by Kenneth Tynan from 1978, included the following question and answer:
Tynan: When you’re at home, whom do you entertain?
Carson: My lawyer, Henry Bushkin, who’s probably my best friend.

This is the story of Johnny Carson as remembered by his long time lawyer, Henry Bushkin.  The story that unfolds about the personal and behind the scenes life of Johnny was to me, mostly sad.  Even though Johnny's work was in entertainment and laughter, his personal life was anything but that.

Bushkin paints a picture of a very real man with problems and issues.  Alcoholism, bad business dealings, marital affairs, strained family relations, health problems. . . You name it, Johnny had it.  Many of his problems were brought on by his own bad decisions.  I think Bushkin can tell of the many years with Carson because he was not only close to him for many years, but on some level, he became much like him.  He says, "I was far beyond being influenced by Johnny;  I was by now well along into emulating him, and though I was conflicted and unhappy about where it was taking me, I made little effort to change."

I think overall this cemented my belief that we all have to deal with hard things in life.  Some of us have more to deal with than others and some of us deal better with our hard things than others.  Regardless of our line of business, our marital state, the amount of money we make or what religion we are, we are all dealt hard things.  Johnny Carson was no exception to this.  He had hard things dealt to him and he made many poor decisions.  He lived a lifestyle completely foreign to me and to many of us.  His life in the spotlight and his affluence are what make his story so interesting.  Johnny Carson is a legend in the entertainment business.

Honestly, I'm glad I don't live in that world.  It was interesting to get an inside take on Johnny Carson's life and there were some stories that showed a generous Johnny and a very not nice Johnny.  If you are a Johnny Carson fan, you will probably love delving deeper into his life story.

I would issue a caution regarding the language and adult content in this book.  There was a lot of language.

Author Henry Bushkin
