Miss Armistead Makes Her Choice
by Heidi Ashworth

Roses in the Miss Delacourt Series

It all begins when the Dowager Duchess of Marcross sends her grandson, Sir Anthony Crenshaw, to accompany her niece, Miss Ginny Delacourt, to their country estate to check on the roses. The Dowager is concerned since her neighbor is keen on stealing cuttings from her spectacular rose garden for Rosehaven, his rose-inspired country home. On the way, they have a carriage accident and are held up by highwaymen but it isn't until they are quarantined at Rosehaven for the pox that Ginny's and Sir Anthony's love begins to bloom.

Thus the series begins...
Heidi Ashworth, the author, has a beautiful rose garden and each stop is showcasing one of her roses.

Adult Historical Romance

Mr. Colin Lloyd-Jones and his friend, Sir Anthony Crenshaw, make a pact to avoid the fair sex during the course of an entire season in order to nurse their wounded hearts. As they shake hands on it, they have no idea that one would soon be off on a trip to escort a young lady to the country and the other soon to fall head over heels in love with Miss Elizabeth Armistead. Sadly, Miss Armistead is only interested in those she trusts not to become so besotted with her beauty that they cannot see her true self. Prior to meeting Colin, she had only met one man fitting that description and she has promised to be his bride. However, Mr. Cruikshank is not due to arrive in London for a full month. Can Colin convince Miss Armistead that he loves her for more than her beauty before her betrothed's ship arrives on British shores?

Purchase from Amazon.

I love books that transport me back to old English times. Regency romance is one of my favorite genres, especially when an author writes in a way that scenes just come alive in my head. This was a book that filled my head with beautiful visions and played out like a movie.

The book started off a bit slow for me and it took little while for me to get into the rhythm and characters but when I did, I couldn’t put it down.

I loved Miss Armistead’s character. She is all things gentle and kind. Her manner is refined and she has a way of soothing every situation. Colin is everything you can imagine a gentleman to be. He is proper and considerate, even when he doesn’t want to be.

I loved the ending, the intrigue and the danger. Things really picked up the last third of the book and I found myself completely caught up and invested.

This was a fun, diverting read. Clean and proper, just like I like them.

Prejudice Meets Pride by Rachael Anderson + $25 Giveaway

Prejudice Meets Pride by Rachael Anderson Book Cover
After years of pinching pennies and struggling to get through art school, Emma Makie’s hard work finally pays off with the offer of a dream job. But when tragedy strikes, she has no choice but to make a cross-country move to Colorado Springs to take temporary custody of her two nieces. She has no money, no job prospects, and no idea how to be a mother to two little girls, but she isn’t about to let that stop her. Nor is she about to accept the help of Kevin Grantham, her handsome new neighbor, who seems to think she’s incapable of doing anything on her own.

Fun, compelling, and romantic, Prejudice Meets Pride is the story of a guy who thinks he has it all figured out and a girl who isn't afraid to show him that he doesn't. It’s about learning what it means to trust, figuring out how to give and to take, and realizing that not everyone gets to pick the person they fall in love with. Sometimes, love picks them.

I always feel like doing a little happy dance when Rachel releases a new book. Not only is this a new book but the beginning of a new series! (more happy dancing) That means that I’m going to get two more books. Already set. The covers look so cute! Happy, happy, happy.

There is always more to a person than what meets the eye. The title, Prejudice Meets Pride, just about sums that up. Kevin and Emma each have their own strengths and flaws. Kevin is established and pretty much always thinks that he is right. He has a good heart and he tries to help it just sometimes comes off wrong, especially to Emma who is desperate to work things out on her own that she just can’t drop the defenses to let someone in.

Emma‘s loyalty and devotion to her family are what make her so endearing. She has hopes and dreams but has temporarily turned them in for what she needs to do to help her brother. I love how Kevin keeps coming back, determined to prove himself helpful and knowledgeable, even when Emma keeps sending him away. It’s just a good story. Light, fun, and romantic.

I’ve been reading lots of shorter stories lately and it was so satisfying to read a full length novel where I had more time to feel the characters develop and the relationship to evolve. I can honestly say that I didn’t want this book to end. I wanted more of Kevin and Emma. Maybe I’ll get to see them make an appearance in the next books!

I hope you enjoy the following excerpt!
“You owe me,” Kevin teased, watching her closely for a reaction.

Guilt appeared first, followed by resignation. She placed her cool hand on his arm. “Would you settle for a thank you? That seems to be all I ever say to you, but I don’t have much else to offer.” She looked so tired, defeated even, as though the rigid strength he’d glimpsed earlier was all used up. What had happened? More than ever, he wanted to pull her into his arms and try to coax some of it back. What was it about her that drew him to her? That made her look beautiful, even next to Nicole, and cause Kevin to miss her when she wasn’t around? Why was his heart suddenly racing like a teenager?

“‘Thank you’ works,” he said, his voice husky.

The corners of her mouth lifted slightly before wilting. She dropped her hand and clasped her fingers together. “Before I lose my nerve, I, uh—need to ask you something.”

When she said nothing more, Kevin prodded, “Yes?”

“I was, uh, just wondering if—” Her lips clamped shut as though she couldn’t force herself to say the words. Her fingers fidgeted, and she couldn’t stand still. It was almost comical watching her fight whatever inner battle was going on in her mind.

“Out with it, Emma,” Kevin said as he fought back a smile.

Her eyes met his for a brief moment before looking down at the floor. “Is that job offer still on the table?” she said in a rush, still looking at her feet.

Anxiety flared in Kevin’s gut for a moment, then quieted almost as quickly. Not only was Emma intelligent and confident, but she was strong and good. She’d do fine.

“Yes,” he said firmly. “The offer is definitely still on the table.”

Hopeful eyes turned up to his—eyes brimming with moisture. She threw her arms around Kevin and hugged him tight. For a few shocked moments, he stood there, wondering what to do. Then he wrapped his arms around her the way he’d wanted to do earlier. As she sniffled into his shirt, he rested his chin on her head. Her hair smelled lightly of cherry blossoms, and her body felt soft and strong at the same time. He didn’t want her to pull away.

But she did eventually. Her eyes were bright with a mixture of defeat and relief. Kevin knew it had cost her a lot to ask him that, yet she’d done it. And he knew exactly who she’d done it for.

Reese's Cowboy Kiss by Kimberly Krey

Texan pageant winner, Reese Taylor, has a former classmate who wants her dead. Now she must leave her friends and family to enter a protection program on Emerson Ranch. A group of good-looking cowboys awaits her, but Reese has her eye on Blake Emerson, the one man too busy with the ranch to give her a chance.

Blake Emerson has no time to go lookin’ for love. He’s got a ranch to run, positions to fill, and an ache in his heart from love gone wrong. So when he agrees to harbor a witness to help on the ranch, Blake assumes his first two problems are solved. But he never dreamed his new guest would be a woman. One he was destined to lose his heart to.

With sparks burning hot and danger around the bend, one question lingers in his mind: Has he only added to his list of troubles, or has Blake just found the woman of his dreams?

*While this book is considered clean romance, it contains passionate kissing and a few mild curse words.*

Best day ever! This book was waiting for me when I first got up this morning. I took the morning by mad rush to get all my "must-do” items done so I could read.

Kimberly Krey is one of my all-time favorite authors and every time a new book is released it feels like Christmas day.

Kimberly knows how to bring tension, chemistry and sizzle to her books. In this book, the chemistry between Reese and Blake is utterly palpable. I could feel it. I call it the “steam, steam, it’s so fogged up I can’t breathe, steam”. Yeah. The cool thing is that even though there is chemistry, sizzle and steam, it doesn’t over power the whole story. The rush of adrenaline at the end with the “bad guy” was great. My heart was pounding throughout this book for many different reasons.

I loved Blake. He is level headed, responsible and well, he is a cowboy. I know I always say this but there is just something about cowboys. Oh, and a cowboy in mud? Who knew it could be so hot?! Blake is all man but he is also a gentleman, a protector. That’s enough to make any woman gush.

Reese is a beauty inside and out. Even when her world was turned upside down, she was still pleasant and kind to others. Her happy outlook was refreshing and made me love her. So often I read books where bad things happen and the character becomes mean or jaded. It was so nice to have Reese’s personality shine through.

As stated above, this is considered a clean romance book. There are no explicit sex scenes but there are some steamier kissing scenes. There is also some mild swearing.

I always beg Kimberly to do up something fun with me for her book releases and she is always such a good sport.  The following is a sort of Q&A conversation that we had over email to go along with this post.  I hope you enjoy it!

So, Kimberly Krey, (in my world) famous author and romance writing extraordinaire, I think it would be fun to have a chat about mud. In my review above, I mentioned the fun, hot scene between Blake and Reese in the mud. So, my first question is how do you really feel about mud and what inspired you to write this mud scene?

Ha ha, excuse me for one moment while my head grows… ;) Let’s see. In the right circumstances, I really love mud. I loved playing in it as a child. Smearing it all over my legs, arms, and swimsuit covered tummy. I loved sculpting things with it. Spreading it over the tips of my hair. I even liked the way it started to lighten and crackle over my skin as it dried in the warmth of the sun.

When I’m writing a novel, I consider what each character's childhood was like, based on their family dynamics, personality, ect. And for some reason, Reese was someone who seemed like she’d have played in the mud as a child. Maybe because she had a sister to play in it with - like I did. Whatever the reason, it felt very natural that Reese had enjoyed playing with the messy, goopy substance, and that she’d then like to play in the mud with the handsome cowboy, Blake Emerson. I mean, who wouldn’t? Of course this led to a rather steamy (but clean - as clean as mud can be - cough, cough) romance scene, and who am I to stop such a thing?

Oh, you should never stop a good romp in the mud. I, for one, am glad you didn't. I used to play in the mud when I was little too. I loved to fill up buckets with mud and "paint" the whole brick house. I thought it was great fun, but my mother didn't. She would come out and tell me to "clean this house off right now!" But, that was all part of the fun. Spraying the mud off the house with the hose? I loved it.

Did you know Mycobacterium vaccae, which is found in mud, is thought to be an anti-depressant? (yeah, because I'm all up on my mud facts. I'm cool like that...) So, I guess you could say that playing in the mud actually makes you feel good. It certainly made Blake and Reese feel good. <wink>

So, do you play in the mud to relieve stress now? What are your best stress relieving tricks?

Wow; an anti-depressant? I did not know that, but I’m glad to know it now. And to answer your question: no, sadly. I haven’t played in the mud for years, but all of this mud-talk is making me crave the feel of it between my fingers. I haven’t planted the garden this year yet, so perhaps I’ll have to make a mess of things first and have a good ol’ time. Maybe invite the kiddos to join me. Then I’ll send my kids into the house to clean up and invite my hubby next. Hmm. This is sounding more appealing by the minute.

Now, tricks for relieving stress… good question. It depends on what’s causing the stress. Sometimes my stress comes from a messy house. If that’s the case, my only release is to clean it like a mad woman going from one room to the next. Starting here, picking up there, and though I’ll begin several projects and only finish a few (in one day, anyway), I can practically feel the stress melting off of me at the knowledge that I’m finally doing something about it. If it’s related to anything but a messy house, I’d say relaxing in front of the warm fireplace. Getting in the hot tub, or taking a nice shower. Reading always helps too because it can often take my mind away from whatever’s bugging, which is wonderful! Not a very original answer, I guess, but there you have it. Oh, and I chomp gum way too loudly when I’m worked up or anxious. I catch myself doing it all the time and try to force myself to stop but it’s nearly impossible to do if I’m stressed out. But now you’ve got me curious. What do YOU do? Have you got some fabulous trick you’ve been keeping all to yourself? C’mon, now’s the time to share...

I've got nothing, really. I get really emotional when I'm stressed so I cry a lot. And I clean my house too. If everything else feels out of control, I clean. I can at least control that. :) Reading is my escape too. And Reese's Cowboy Kiss was a perfect escape for me.

It seems like Reese, in the book, dealt with stress really well. She has such an easy, sweet dispostition. Maybe because she knew how to play in the mud?

The mud scene was one of my favorites from the book because it was hot, yes, but also because it had such a tender moment that led to a change in Blake and Reese's relationship. I'm curious to know how you put things like that together in your book. Do you think scenes like through or do you just sit down and write and see where it takes you?

I’d have to say it’s a combination of each. I usually know the main points of the story, but the rest sort of unfolds naturally once I let each character be who and how they are. I didn’t actually know Blake was going to do what he did on that date until he did it, as odd as it might sound. But when you’re writing from each perspective and know what’s going through each character's heads, they just sort of lead the way, as long as you - the writer - are willing to step out of the way. It’s such a fun and truly exciting process for me. Kind of like reading a book, really.

As far as Reese goes, I agree that she dealt with stress well. A lot of that had to do with taking action herself, rather than sitting around being frustrated. I like that she did what she wanted to do whether Blake would like it or not. She’s definitely sweet, but she's assertive too, which is often crucial to finding inner peace, in my opinion.

My thanks to Kimberly Krey for allowing me to read and review this book for her.  I hope you will all go out and pick it up!  Especially if you love a good romance- clean with a bit of steam.

You can purchase Reese's Cowboy Kiss at Amazon.

Run, Run, Runaway by Helen Conrad + $20 and Book Giveaway!

On tour with Prism Book Tours

Welcome to my tour stop for
Run Run Runaway
Destiny Bay Romances: Sweet Editions
by Helen Conrad

Destiny Bay Romances - Forever Yours
(Sweet Edition #1)
by Helen Conrad
Adult Romance
Paperback & Ebook, 169 pages
March 28th 2014 by Doorknock Publishing
It seemed like a good idea at the time.

The trouble is, when you run from your problems, you often find out your biggest obstacle is along for the tripit's you! Reid Carrington realizes that when he finds Jennifer and recognizes the quiet desperation in her eyes. Can he save someone who doesn't want to be saved? Or like a lifeguard rescuing a swimmer, will she pull him down into the undertow in the end?

Recipes for Jennifer's Mango Salsa and Tilly's Bruschetta included.

This is the first review of three I am participating in for this author.  The main reason I signed on to do this tour was because this author has taken her romance books and done a little overhaul for those of us who love romance but love them without descriptive sex scenes.  I love that Helen Conrad has heard the pleading cries of the “clean readers” and taken the time to change these books up a bit to fit another group of people.  They are titled “Sweet Editions”.  I think it’s cool and I wanted to promote that.

Run, Run, Runaway features Jennifer and Reid who go way, way back to when Jennifer was just a girl following Reid around like a puppy.  They are both all grown up now but time has distanced them from each other.  Jennifer is the runaway who is adamant that she will not return home to her parents.  She has a secret that she is protecting and she is convinced that staying away is the best option.  Jennifer has created a stable and good life for herself.  She loves her job and she also loves “extreme” activities where she can lose herself on the edge.

Reid stumbles across Jennifer after she jumps out of an airplane.  When he sees her, he just knows he has to find a way to get her to return home to her parents.  Jennifer is a tough nut to crack.  She has spent years running from the truth and pretending she doesn’t care that she is separated from her parents.  Reid was her first crush and her first love.  Seeing him again brings back all kinds of memories and feelings.

Jennifer proves to be a bit impulsive throughout the book.  Her actions don’t always speak the best of her but her heart is good.  She is trying fiercely to protect her family from the things she thinks will hurt them.  She is willing to sacrifice what she loves for that protection.

Reid seems to have lost himself over the course of the years due to circumstances out of his control.  He’s become what he said he didn’t want to be.  He is a fixer by nature though and thus his desire to fix Jennifer too.  He is well meaning but sort of goes about it the wrong way.

I liked the interactions between Jennifer and Reid.  You feel the history and connection between them.  There were times the story seemed a bit rough around the edges and the flow felt interrupted, I would imagine due to the “clean up” process.  But, in the end, the story was sweet and this girl got the happily ever after than she loves.

Purchase from Amazon.  Only .99 cents right now!

A January Bride by Deborah Raney

Who can work in a house that's overrun by contractors and carpenters? Not Madeleine Houser, a successful novelist who gladly accepts the help of her octogenarian friend, Ginny, to arrange for a temporary office in the charming bed and breakfast owned by Ginny's friend, Arthur. Maddie’s never met the innkeeper––but a friendship grows between them as Maddie and Arthur leave messages for each other each day. To Maddie’s alternate delight and chagrin, she seems to be falling for the inn’s owner––a man who's likely many years her senior––and who she’s never even met.

There seems to be a growing trend for shorter, series made books. I’ve been reading quite a few different ones and I have to say that I like it. This particular series is set with a new book each month by a different author. All these books have to do with brides and the series is called “A Year of Weddings”. To me, that’s pretty much a guarantee of a happily ever after. If you are looking for fluffy, romantic, quick reads, this series might be the one for you. A head’s up that this series is Christian Fiction in case that makes or breaks things for you. I, personally, like that because I know what I’m going to get. There will be no sex or language that I might find offensive.

This series actually begins with December, but I didn’t get the chance to read that one yet. I started with January and maybe I’ll just work my way through the year and end up with December.
  J

What I liked about this book was how the romance actually came about. The couple didn’t actually meet until toward the end of the book. They did, however, exchange notes back and forth. The funny thing is that each one thought the other was considerably older than themselves. Madeline thought she was borrowing a quiet space to work during the day from a retired, older man. Arthur thinks he is letting an older lady borrow his home while he is gone during the day so that she can write her romance novels.

Another thing I liked was that the characters were a bit older. They had been through love and heartache and had a sense of maturity about them. They were both well established in their careers and had a good sense of who they are. There wasn’t a lot of nonsense, just two people trying to figure things out.

This was a good start to this series for me. I have “A February Bride” waiting for me to read next and I’m sure looking forward to it!

My thanks to the publisher, Zondervan, for allowing me to read and review this book.

You can purchase this book at Amazon.

Second Chances 101: A Ripple Effect Romance by Donna K. Weaver + a $25 Giveaway

Thirty seven year old Francie Davis, a recent widow and empty nester, gets to attend college at last. She’s sure her luck has changed when she also lands a job on campus that will pay her tuition, as administrative assistant to a history professor. When her handsome new boss yells at her on the first day of work, Francie worries she will never be good enough. For Professor Alex Diederik, life is going downhill fast. Not only is his bitter ex-wife trying to poison their only daughter against him, but now his one place of solace—his work environment—is being complicated by his attractive new administrative assistant. She drives home his feelings of failure as a husband and father, and Alex wonders if hiring her was the right thing to do. Francie will have to put aside her hurt and insecurities or risk her dreams, while Alex must look outside himself if he’s to mend the breach with his daughter. And, perhaps, find someone who can help heal his pain.

I thought maybe Francie would get her own story told in this book.  This is a character we met in Lost and Found, the previous book in this series.  I'm glad Francie has her own story.  She isn't anything like what I imagined her to be when I read the other book.  There is so much more personality and depth to her than I first thought.

One thing that sets this book apart from the others is that the characters in this book are older and more experienced in life.  They have experienced many deeper struggles.  They both have grown children.  There is a sense of maturity there.

I love how Francie tends to mother all those around her.  She can't help but take care and look out for other people.  Her compassion makes her a great character.  She has spent years being a strong woman, taking care of almost everything by herself.  I love how there is just no hesitation.  If there is something to be done, she just does it.  Like fixing the roof.  ;)  You just need to read it to find out the fun scene behind that one.

This was a great addition to the Ripple Effect Romance series.  These books are quick and easy to read.  You are guaranteed a happily ever after ending which really makes me happy!

Enjoy the following excerpt!

“Are you for real?”

“I’m not sure what you mean,” Francie said, trying not to be offended. She was used to being complimented on her cooking. Even Greg hadn't been able to find anything wrong with that.

The girl pointed at the sandwich Francie had pulled from the plastic wrapping. “You’re really bringing food from home?”

“I don’t have money for eating out.” Francie hated the flush she could feel creeping up her neck.

“What, you spend all your money on your clothes?”

Francie glanced down at the suit she had bought for her first day. It was only the second time she had worn it. She decided to address the girl's remark the same way she had when Rafe used to get snarky with her.

“I like you.” Francie picked up half of the sandwich. “You remind me of when I was young and rude. What’s your name?” She took a bite of her lunch.

The girl blinked but then giggled. “All right. I deserved that.” She reached out her hand in a very formal gesture. “You can call me Rose.”

A Soul's Kiss by Debra Chapoton

When a tragic accident leaves Jessica comatose, her spirit escapes her body. Navigating a supernatural realm is tough, but being half dead has its advantages.

Like getting into people’s thoughts.

Like taking over someone’s body.

Like experiencing romance on a whole new plane - literally.

Jessica learns an amazing truth as she struggles to return to her body before the doctors pull the plug, only she can’t do it alone. Now the only two people willing to help Jessica’s splintered soul are the two she’s hurt the most. They must find a way to guide her soul back to her body ... before it’s too late.

I haven’t ever read a book quite like this one before.  I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect going into this book but I was pleasantly surprised.

Jessica finds herself in an in between state- her body is in a coma, unresponsive, but her spirit is full on and active.  Jessica finds she has the ability to get into people’s heads and know their thoughts and see their memories.  By doing this, she is able to uncover the truth about some events involving her friends and herself.

I’ll admit I was a little bit creeped out by Jessica’s mind traveling ability.  Can you imagine?  Someone else in your head?  <creepy shivers>  Then she gets stuck inside someone’s mind and can’t get out.  Yikers!

What I liked about the book was that each chapter was written from different points of view.  All the characters, including Jessica, had their moment.  I liked gaining information that way and I thought it added a lot to the book.

When Jessica entered someone’s head, she always came away with a part of them and left some part of her or other’s she had touched behind.  So, that means that eventually, everyone that had Jessica in their mind also had bits of the other people too.  Memories, mostly, that weren’t their own.  Wow.  It all sounds so strange, right?  But, kinda cool too.

I enjoyed reading this book.  It was interesting and kept my attention the whole way through.

Content:  There was some mention of teenage sex although nothing is described in detail.  But, you do know it happened.  There is also a group of teenagers who deliberately set out to hurt other teenagers.  They are mean and do things that are against the law.

You can purchase A Soul's Kiss at Amazon.
