The Secret Ingredient by Nancy Naigle

Years ago, Kelly McIntyre and Andrew York were engaged and dreaming of opening a restaurant together. Then he chose an opportunity to study in Paris over the small-town life they’d planned, and their romance came to a bittersweet end.

But Kelly’s doing fine. She’s not only the owner of a potbellied pig named Gray, but also of her own bakery. Business is good—so good that she’s invited to compete in a Valentine’s Day bake-off. As she prepares for the contest, she tries not to get distracted by Andrew’s visit to town.

When Andrew sees Kelly, it stirs up his old feelings. Little does he know that soon, in New York, he’ll compete against her in the bake-off…and they’ll both realize how much their past is a part of them still.

This new romance from bestselling author Nancy Naigle includes a free original Hallmark recipe for Almond Honey Cake with Strawberry Cream.

In honor of Valentine's Day this week, I thought it would be fun to review a Hallmark story!  If you love baking shows or baking competitions, you will LOVE this book.  I am not a baker and I really don't love baking AT ALL but I sure wish I had someone to bake all these yummy sounding desserts for me- especially the Almond Honey Cake with Strawberry Cream.  That was the main event dessert of the book and it sounds delish!  The recipe is included with the book so if anyone wants to try it out and bring it over to me, that would be awesome and appreciated!  😋😀🍰

I can see why this book is from Hallmark!  It has all the feel good elements to it that Hallmark is known for.  I could easily picture this book as a movie.  Kelly and Andrew have a second chance at first love.  I love that Kelly went on to fulfill all her dreams without Andrew and has made a huge name for herself doing what she loves.  She is a strong woman and a kind woman as well.  She handled all situations with grace and class.  She was very easy to like.  Andrew?  It took time for him to win me over because I am a girl who doesn't trust easily and he was not good to Kelly.  He had a lot to prove.  By the end he had mostly won me over.  😉

This was an easy reading, heartwarming, love story.  Sometimes the details of all the baking became tedious and a bit long to me, but overall, I really enjoyed this story.

Between the Lines (A Pigeon Grove Novel) by Dave Cenker

Is accepting a troubled past safer than embracing an uncertain future?

Sophie Holland, quiet and unassuming on the outside, is lost in the shadows of her fiancé, Travis Turner. It's the same place her troubled past hides.

With her thoughts and ideas longing to escape the protective shell she's carefully built, will the quiet southern charm of Pigeon Grove and its residents provide the nudge Sophie needs to help her dreams take flight?

To his family and friends, thirty-year-old Mason Shaw appears an open book. Unafraid to bare his emotions, few people know Mason has secretly buried the guilt of a decades-old decision, which still haunts him.

Can Mason overcome childhood demons to find his place in the world, or will the return of Travis, his high school archrival, threaten to destroy everything he believes... about fate, the pursuit of dreams, and love?

Trust, of self and others, hides in that fragile space between holding on and letting go...

First, I have to say that I think the cover for this book is so pretty.  I really love it.

Next, I have to admit that I struggled with this book.  It is heavy on character introspection and limited on actual character interactions and dialogue which made it really hard for me, personally, to stay invested in the story and feel that emotional connection to the characters.  Character growth is a necessary and vital part to any story and Mason and Sophie definitely show growth but this story dwelt in that individual introspection too much for my personal taste.  The forward momentum was slow, with the characters swirling in the same place for what felt like a long time.

The ending was, by far, the best bit of the book for me.  Full knowing and resolution always feels good.  I think that while this particular writing style isn't my cup of tea, it may be very appealing to others.

I actually think this author has missed his calling as a poet.  (or maybe he is and I just don't know it!)  His grand use of pretty words and phrases make me think he could write beautiful poetry, full of multiple meanings, both hidden and obvious.  He also clearly has a specific interest in the reasoning behind human nature which would also lend itself to poetry.

Content:  unmarried couple lives and sleeps together but there are no intimate scenes.  Kissing.

Escape to Everly Manor by Chalon Linton + $25 and Book Giveaway!

https://amzn.to/2WQA38z

Nineteen-year-old Lizzy and her young brother, Thomas, find themselves orphaned after a tragic accident claims the lives of their parents. Their estrange Uncle Cline arrives to claim his inheritance, and his roguish ways cast a shadow over the manor. Both the family estate and guardianship of his niece and nephew were left to him, and scheming Uncle Cline is determined to indulge his newfound wealth and rid himself of his charges. Desperate to save her brother form a dangerous life at sea, and herself from being married off to a detestable old gentleman, Lizzy knows there is only one choice left—they must run.

Lizzy and Thomas sneak away and find refuge in an abandoned cabin. There they remain hidden—until fate acquaints Lizzy with Mr. Barton, a charming gentleman who is immediately intrigued by the mysterious young woman. Concealing her identity, Lizzy is unaware that there is much more to this compassionate man than meets the eye. Through his kindness to herself and her brother, Lizzy begins to trust Mr. Barton. Soon Lizzy realizes he may be her best hope for a life in which she can live—and love—as she chooses . . .

From the very first moments of this book, I knew I was going to love Lizzy.  She is determined, loyal and courageous.  Her devotion to her brother was so endearing and I swear I could just feel her frantic desire to protect him.  I was right there with her.  And Barton?  Yeah, I really loved him too.  Kindness is one of the most attractive qualities in a man, I think.  Barton was ever so kind and a born protector.  I loved that.  And him.  Did I say that already?

Sometimes regency books can be a little placid in nature but not this story.  I loved that from the very beginning there was tension and that feeling of intensity that kept building.  I could feel that things were going to explode at some point but I just didn't know how.  It was awesome.  The ending was so satisfying.  Take that, bad guys!

I really enjoyed this one.  I read through it quickly because I just didn't want to put it down.

Healing Hearts (Savage Wells #2) by Sarah M. Eden

Wyoming Territory, 1876
As the only doctor in the frontier town of Savage Wells, Gideon MacNamara knows his prospects for a bride are limited. The womenfolk in town are either too young, too old, or already spoken for. So, being a practical man, he decides to take advantage of the matchmaking service of the day—mail-order brides—and sends away for a woman with nursing experience.

When Miriam steps off the stagecoach in Savage Wells, she sees a bright future in front of her. But when the town—and Gideon—meets her, ready for a wedding, her excitement quickly turns to horror. Somehow Dr. MacNamara's message had gotten turned around. He didn’t want a nurse, he wanted a wife. When she refuses to marry him, she finds herself stranded in Savage Wells with some very unhappy townspeople.

But Gideon is not like the other men Miriam has met. Embarrassed by the misunderstanding, he offers her a job, and the two begin an awkward—and often humorous—dance of getting to know each other as they work to care for the people of their town. Romance blossoms between the two, but when a former medical associate of Miriam’s arrives in town, Gideon and the other townsfolk must rally around Miriam to protect her from a dangerous fate. Gideon and Miriam must decide if they are willing to risk their hearts for each other even as buried secrets are brought to light.

Every time I pick up a book by Sarah Eden I am reminded just why I love her books so much.  They always feel so good to me- like wrapping up in the coziest blanket.  Gentle, warm, inviting.  The characters feel real and the story envelopes me.

Poor Gideon.  All he wants is someone to love and support him.  He is lonely and tired.  Little does he realize at first, but Miriam feels and longs for the exact same thing but where Gideon probably harbors some slight hope that one day that can still happen for him, I think Miriam has given up all hope.  I can't even imagine the life she has lived, the terrible scenes she has witnessed or the poor treatment she has endured.   My heart broke for her.  I can't tell you how much I wanted all good things for both Gideon and Miriam.  I was firmly invested in their stories and their happiness.

This story was definitely of a more serious nature.  There weren't many moments of lightness and joy but the story felt full, well developed and definitely held my interest and emotions.  It was so good to return to Savage Wells and see some old friends from the first book.  I really hope there will be more stories to come!

Winning the Cowboy's Heart by Karen Rock + $50 and Book Giveaway!

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

Winning the Cowboy's Heart
(Rocky Mountain Cowboys #5)
By Karen Rock
Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 379 Pages
February 1st 2019 by Harlequin Heartwarming

Jewel Cade wants two things—

One is Heath Loveland

The Rocky Mountain cowgirl has her heart set on becoming range boss of the Cade ranch. But first she has to accompany the son of her family’s longtime enemy—and her off-limits secret crush—on a cattle drive across Colorado. Discovering Heath shares her attraction only makes for a rockier road. Because Jewel has a sneaking suspicion that if she drops her guard, the cowboy might ride off with her heart.

This has been such a fun series so far.  I am loving it.  Finally we get to Jewel, one of the rare women in the midst of this family of mostly men.  She is feisty, tough and so very smart about ranching and animals.  She is definitely trying to prove herself to everyone- especially her brothers.  Jewel doesn't try to be someone she isn't to impress others.  She just works hard to prove she is good enough for what she wants in each situation she finds herself.  I really loved Jewel.

One thing I love about this book was Heath's perspective.  He never really paid too much attention to Jewel but then as he spent more time with her, he came to recognize her beauty both inside and out.  It was more of a realization for Heath instead of the instant attraction from the beginning.  I liked that.  But once Heath was aware, boy was he.

The family dynamics continue to play a large role in the book as with all the other books in this series.  The bigger story is playing out and shifting with each of the main characters from previous books contributing their part.  I love the ongoing feeling of family and, well, the drama that only family can bring.

I can't wait for the next book which is coming soon!

As Adrianne works side by side with Prince Henry to bring success to the program, she realizes there’s more to the man than her first impression. But as problems arise threatening everything she’s worked for, is their new friendship enough to allow their feelings to grow into something more?

 * Amazon * Goodreads *

I know this is book six in this series but I haven't read any of the other books. I felt this book did an excellent job of standing on its own and definitely peaked my interest in the rest of the series that is written by three different authors.

This is a gentle, sweet story. I liked the first met between Henry and Adrianne which set into motion a whole string of events, all revolving around a program for children, that provided plenty opportunities for interactions and falling in love.

I loved Henry's willingness to learn from others and how that helped humble him a little bit. There is something incredibly attractive about a man who owns up to his mistakes and forgives easily. Henry did that and so much more.

This was a great romantic diversion.

All About That Kiss (Kissed by the Bay #6) by Susan Hatler

City girl Janine Wilson’s career is taking off but the same can’t be said about her love life. No matter—as manager of the Inn at Blue Moon Bay, Janine’s in charge of throwing a huge party to celebrate the Inn’s recent expansion and doesn’t have time for distractions. Unfortunately, two big ones suddenly show up: her thrill-seeking incompatible ex, Cody, who refuses to accept their breakup, and Cody’s handsome and charming best friend, Texas cowboy Jackson Davis.

Reluctantly, Janine agrees to meet Cody for one last dinner because Cody says he has a huge business opportunity for the Inn. But when Cody takes her on a boat ride to show her his great idea, Jackson is at the helm. Janine has been trying to resist her attraction to Jackson because they have no common interests, not to mention he’s her ex’s best friend. Once they stop on a deserted island, though, Janine doesn’t expect the sparks that fly between them, the spontaneous kiss they share, or what Cody does after witnessing said kiss.

Janine was convinced she needed a sophisticated man who shared the same interests as her. Now that she’s been stranded on a deserted island with Jackson, will she discover he’s everything she never knew she really wanted?

This was such a fun book!  It's no secret that I love reading Susan Hatler's books and I was really excited to read Janine's story.  She made some strong appearances in The Sweetest Kiss (Book #4) (along with Jackson!) and I knew her story was going to be a good one.

I think I would like to be friends with Janine.  She is my kind of girl.  I really bonded with her over the whole "camping" experience.  I love her desire to prove herself that translated into hard work and concern for her job.

Jackson- so loyal and kind.  How can you not love him?  There were so many charged moments between Janine and Jackson- yummy kissing, undeniable attraction and of course, plenty of misunderstanding.  Even in their worst moments, I still loved them both.

This was another fabulous addition in this Kissed by the Bay series and one of favorites.  I loved this one.
