Quantum Breach by Denver Acey

Tanner Zane is a Mormon with a secret criminal past. Nobody suspects that, before his religious conversion, Tanner hacked into thousands of computer networks across the globe. He accumulated millions of dollars from his illegal activities until a sudden, life-changing event caused him to abandon hacking and give his fortune to charity. But Tanner’s guarded past is exposed when he is kidnapped by his mysterious neighbor and forced to hack into an impossible target – Los Alamos National Labs. Inside the government facility is a prototype quantum computer that is powerful enough to crack the digital safeguards of the Internet. When Tanner learns that cyber-terrorists will use the quantum computer to commit massive identify theft and corporate espionage around the world, he deliberately engages in an intellectual battle with his captors to prevent them from obtaining the device.

Do you see the sub-title under the main title of this book?  "A Mormon Hacker Novel".  That seriously cracks me up.  Oh my.  Tanner, a Mormon with a secret...  I wish they would have gone with "The Quantum Breach" and left it at that.  Yes, the main character is a Mormon (a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) but there is no religious doctrine preached within and the whole idea of him being "Mormon" is really moot point.

Tanner is a likable, smart guy.  His past misdeeds come back to haunt him when he is kidnapped and forced to use his hacking skills again.  He does what he has to do to keep his family alive and safe but all the while he is planning and plotting.  Those kidnappers underestimated Tanner and his abilities.

What I enjoyed as a reader was that while we were following the plans and execution of the kidnappers, we always knew Tanner was up to something but we didn't know exactly what.  There were little hints and I had it mostly figured out, but not entirely.  There was just enough to make me think I was smart but not enough to give it all away.

This book had that spy, espionage feel with some action and danger.  It was completely clean, which I appreciate.  There wasn't really what I would consider romance, which was totally fine with me because this wasn't really that type of book.

I don't know if I can say I loved the eye opening insight into how easy it is for people to gather my information in this digital age.  It is scary to think how easy it is.  I think I am guilty of complacency and even a bit of ignorance when it comes to identity theft and how I put information out into the digital world.  I need to be much more careful.

Overall this was a good book and I really enjoyed reading it.  It kept my attention the whole way through.  The ending left it a bit open so I'm thinking there could be a follow up book.  I would definitely pick up another book by this author.

You can purchase "The Quantum Breach" at Amazon.

Few people understand the terrifying, yet realistic threat of computer hacking like Denver Acey. Denver has spent his entire professional career in the information technology industry where he has witnessed and even thwarted actual cybercrime. From his top-secret job working for the US government to securing computer networks at Fortune 500 companies, Denver is personally familiar with hackers and their unscrupulous activities.

But over the years, Denver has become increasingly frustrated with Hollywood's inaccurate portrayal of cybercrime. Hackers are more intelligent and more sophisticated than simple teenagers, who guzzle down Mountain Dew while playing video games. Cybercrime is a billion-dollar business that encompasses organized crime and foreign governments. For these elite hackers, the fruits of success are iconic trademarks, innovative patents, and government secrets.

Because of his unique background, Denver decided to write a book to dispel hacking myths while highlighting the tenacity of cybercriminals. Utilizing actual computer hacking concepts and scenarios that he has experienced firsthand, Denver illustrates -- in a simple way for even the non-techie to understand -- how vulnerable we all are to cybercrime.

A is for Abstinence by Kelly Oram

Six-time Grammy Award-winning musician Kyle Hamilton has it all—money, fame, talent, good looks, and a job he loves. His only regret in life: walking away from a certain notorious virgin because he was too prideful, stubborn, and even afraid to give her the only thing she asked of him—his abstinence.

Four years and a broken heart later, Kyle realizes that sex isn’t everything, and he suddenly can’t stop thinking about the girl that got away. Virgin Val Jensen got under his skin like no one else ever has. He wasn’t ready for her then, but things are different now. He’s grown up, he’s learned a few things, and he’s finally figured out exactly what he wants, or, rather, who he wants.

Kyle Hamilton wants a do-over, and this time he’s willing to do—or not do—whatever it takes.

First of all, if you haven't read V is for Virgin, you really need to read that book before you read this book.  Kyle and Val's story starts there and continues on in this book, years later.  While V is for Virgin was a YA book, this book moves up into the "new adult" genre.  Because of the content, it is more suitable for mature audiences.  There are no explicit sex scenes, but the whole book revolves around sex, or lack of sex, or wishing for sex or talking about sex.  You get the idea.  It is not a book I would hand to any teenager I know.

As I said, Kyle and Val have grown up a bit since the last book.  A lot can happen in four years, and it has for both Kyle and Val.  Luckily, Kyle is trying to grow up and become more mature about things.  He's decided that Val is the girl he wants and he sets out on a mission to do whatever it takes to get her.

Val is understandably wary of Kyle and his intentions.  She's been burned by him before.  Of course, the flames of passion still burn strong and the chemistry between Kyle and Val is enough to set the book on fire.  Their lusty connection continues to build to bursting.  It must be noted that Val promotes waiting until marriage for sex.  That is absolutely a message I do stand behind for so many reason.  I am grateful to see that she stuck that decision in this book as well.

Kelly Oram really has a gift for writing tangible chemistry.  The dialogue between characters is real and flows so well.  I was happy to see some resolution with Kyle and Val as well as some of the other characters.

This book crossed over my comfort lines with the whole sex theme.  Explicit sex scenes aside, I still wouldn't call this book a "clean romance".  There is also swearing, which goes beyond "mild".  I could have done without that as well.  Both of these are personal preferences, I realize, and not shared by everyone.  The author is very upfront about the content in this book being more pronounced and I'm grateful to her for that.  In the future, I will stick with her YA books and leave the New Adult books to more adventurous readers.  ;)

Fresh Courage Take: Come to Zion Series, volume 3 by Dean Hughes

The United States turned a blind eye when the Mormons were driven from Missouri to Illinois and finally out of the country altogether. How can the government—and Brigham Young—now be asking the Mormons to come up with 500 able-bodied soldiers to assist in the war with Mexico? And how can Will Lewis be asked to join the Mormon Battalion when it means leaving Liz and their two little boys on their own in the wilderness? How many sacrifices will be required in order for the Saints to create Zion?

And in modern-day Nauvoo, Jeff and Abby Lewis are facing challenges of their own. Juggling family priorities, professional responsibilities, and Church callings becomes and almost impossible feat. It is clear that building Zion in the latter days will require sacrifices, just as it did in the time of Jeff's ancestors.

In this concluding volume of the Come to Zion trilogy, beloved novelist Dean Hughes provides a unique perspective on the struggles and sacrifices—and ultimate joy—of faithful Saints in any generation.

I'm happy to be a part of reviewing this final installment of the Come to Zion series by Dean Hughes.  I've reviewed both of the previous books in this series and it's always satisfying to come to the end of a series.  Closure, that's what it is.

I first need to say that Dean Hughes is such a gifted writer.  He is a man who knows his craft.  Historical Fiction is what he does best and when you read a Dean Hughes book, you know that the research has been done.  You can feel it.  At the end of this book Dean Hughes says that he hopes there are still people out there that love Historical Fiction over the ever popular Fantasy genre that is exploding right now.  Well, yes.  There is at least one girl out here that loves Historical Fiction over Fantasy.  (although I do love some fantasy too!)

"Fresh Courage Take" is an LDS Historical Fiction.  It follows the movements of the Mormon pioneers- driven from their homes in Illinois to the Salt Lake Valley.  Told in alternating story lines, we also follow a modern day couple through daily challenges of life.  The Mormon pioneer is a story well told in the LDS historical fiction genre.  I've read so many variations of this sort of book so it wasn't anything new or exciting, but it was solid.  Following the character, Will, through his march with the Mormon Battalion was heart breaking.  The struggles and suffering those men endured!  I cannot even fathom walking that far.

When reading books such as this, one thing I always come away with is gratitude.  The sacrifice and courage of those who have gone before is overwhelming.  I have what I have today because of those who have gone before me.  It is both humbling and inspiring.

You can purchase "Fresh Courage Take" at Amazon and Deseret Book.

My thanks to Deseret Book for allowing me to read and review this book for them.  I was provided this book in exchange for my honest review.

All the Finer Things by Stephanie Worlton

Sometimes money costs too much.

Married to one of the most lucrative and sought after plastic surgeons in SoCal, Megan Hamilton has it all. Her posh life, designer clothes, and stunning penthouse leave her wanting for nothing… or do they? Controlled by his obsessive pursuit of perfection, Doctor Matthew Hamilton will stop nothing short of breaking his young, spirited bride into a subservient trophy wife. But when parenthood enters their picture, the entire game changes. How far will Megan have to go to escape Matt's obsessive control and abuse? And how much will she have to lose before she gets there?

Doctor Matthew Hamilton has everything he loves - money, power, reputation. Or at least he thinks he does, until his spoiled wife decides to leave and unknowingly blows a hole right in the heart of his carefully laid plans. With Megan gone, he faces to lose everything and he won't stop until he finds her.

When a fancy car and it's equally fancy owner take up residence next door, Ammon Carter's life of solidarity gets turned on its head. His quiet orchard community is no place for a pampered princess, but as a Scoutmaster, his deep moral code doesn't allow him to be anything but courteous to the young mother. Content as a bachelor, he does his best to keep his distance from the misplaced beauty and her son... unfortunately, his dog has different plans.

I was really looking forward to the day I finally got to read this book.  I just had a feeling I was going to like it.  And I did!

Megan is a bit pampered, it's true.  She has always known the finer things of life.  But Megan also knows that those things are not worth abuse.  In order to protect herself and her son, she knows she must escape the hands of her abusive and controlling husband.

I liked the transformation that Megan goes through.  She is a bit haughty at first, judging people and places but Megan has a good heart and she is willing to try new things and new ways of doing things.  Her heart transforms.  She learns that she is capable and able to things she never ever thought about doing.  She finds peace and enjoyment in self accomplishment.

The sense of community that surrounds Megan is awesome.  I love books where I feel that.  Maybe that's because I've mostly lived in smaller communities and it feels like home to me.  Ammon is a "do good" scouter.  He helps his community and loves his home.  Life lessons have taught him a lot and he is a person of strength and character.  I LOVED Ammon's dog.  :)

This was such a good read.  Clean, romantic with a bit of suspense thrown in.  I was drawn in from the beginning reading about Megan's abusive marriage and her desperate plans to escape.  I was able to connect to the characters and make a movie in my head while I read.  That makes me happy.

Please note that there are some descriptive abusive scenes in this book.  Those especially sensitive to this may want to proceed with caution.

Under the Hood by Sally Clements

When sexy mechanic Alice Starr mistakenly believes attorney Mark Jameson needs her help, he discovers he likes being rescued for a change. Smitten by her confidence, he hides his expertise so he has an excuse to see her again.

Starting their new all-female garage, Under the Hood, is keeping Alice and her friends busy. She doesn't have time for a man. But with one kiss, she and Mark have advanced into water so deep she's in danger of drowning. So why hasn't he called?

Mark wants to tell Alice the truth so they can pursue a relationship. But he's got even bigger problems at his office when his bitter aunt threatens Alice’s livelihood. He needs a plan, fast, or else Under the Hood and his chances with Alice could both be ruined.

This is a super quick novella- it was almost over as soon as it began.  At least it felt that way.  Maybe it was just my super human fast reading abilities...

I liked the concept of this book- Alice being a mechanic for an "all woman" garage, independent and in control meets Mark, who doesn't really need her help but allows the pretty girl do her job because, well, she is pretty and he is interested.  There is an abundance of chemistry going on.

Like I said, the book goes by quickly, and there isn't a ton of time to get to become invested in the characters but I did like the story.  It was easy, light reading with a happily ever after ending.  I just love those.

This book was full of sexual innuendo and references to sex but no actual sex.  Although if it would have gone one chapter longer, there would have been!  There is some mild swearing as well.  It was a little more than I prefer in a "clean romance" but that is just my personal preference.

You can purchase Under the Hood at Amazon.

Paris Cravings by Kimberly Montpetit

Can life really turn on a dime,
a missed bus—
or a stuck pastry shop door?

Chloe Dillard’s life has always been complicated. Her mother is a neurotic romance novelist and her boyfriend, Mathew, has been pressuring her to go “all the way”—even as one of her own best friends offers to accommodate him.

But after The Worst Night of Her Life, Chloe escapes on her Senior Class trip to the swoon-worthy city of Paris which takes her mind off her troubles—temporarily. On the final leg of her dream trip, Chloe squeezes in one final run for a last-minute box of decadent pastries. Add a stuck door, subtract a broken four-inch heel from her cute strappy sandals, and Chloe ends up one stuck girl on the bakery shop floor with a sprained ankle.

Rescued by the shop owner’s dreamy son with chocolate-syrup eyes, the beautiful city of Paris suddenly becomes Chloe’s personal secret adventure. And even though Jean-Paul, the oh-so-kind La Patisserie shop boy is the gentlemanly guy Chloe has always dreamed of, even he has a girlfriend.

The police are tracking her down as a run-away, Mom’s having a nervous breakdown over her daughter’s “disappearance”, and Chloe’s just trying to have a Happily-Ever-After even as her dreams with Matt are swirling down the drain.

Could being lost in the city of Paris be just what the doctor ordered? What’s a girl to do in the most romantic city in the world?

If you have ever dreamed of the romantic city of Paris, France then you are going to love this book.  It is full of all things French:  the city scenes, the drool worthy pastries and the hot french boy with chocolate eyes.  All I know is I was left wanting French pastries so badly it almost hurt.

Chloe is young, just out of high school and on a school trip to Paris.  She is a fun character, easy to like.  One look into Jean-Paul's chocolate eyes and suddenly her embarrassing mishap doesn't seem so bad after all.

I loved Chloe and Jean-Paul's little adventure through Paris.  It was romantic and will have every young girl swooning.  Having officials trying to track Chloe down gave it a sort of bad girl feel which heightened the romance of the whole situation.  At least Chloe called her mom and kept in touch with her that way.  She wasn't totally off the charts.  Phew!

There is quite a lot of the book devoted to Chloe and her boyfriend who wants to have sex and has been pressuring Chloe back home.  She catches him in compromising situations with her friend and isn't sure she can trust him.  Even though Chloe comes to the conclusion eventually that she doesn't want to have sex, it was a big focal point in the book.  It was told in flashback mode throughout the story.

I loved the ending, how it sort of came full circle, ending how it began.  Very romantic.

About the Author:

Kimberley Montpetit once spent all her souvenir money at the La Patisserie shops when she was in Paris—on the arm of her adorable husband. The author grew up in San Francisco, another swoon-worthy city, loves all things Parisian and chocolate and lives in a small town along the Rio Grande with her family.

Kimberley has won many awards for her work, including the Southwest Book Award, the Whitney Award, the Arizona/New Mexico Book Award, is a Crystal Kite Finalist (SCBWI) and included in the Bank Street College Best Books of the Year.

She once stayed in a haunted castle tower room at Borthwick Castle in Scotland, sailed on the Seine in Paris, walked the beaches of Normandy, eaten in numerous French cafes, ridden a camel in Petra, Jordan, sunbathed on Waikiki, shopped the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, and spent the night in an old Communist hotel in Bulgaria.

She adores all baked goodies; brownies, éclairs, donuts, tarts, and pie, and makes a lot of chocolate chip cookies while revising.

A sweet old-fashioned girl

isn’t what Grant Carrington is looking for. A man who lives for speed and danger, he’s only slowed down because he’s been forced to by an injury. Carrie Harlow isn’t his type, but he needs her in order to heal. She knows she’s playing with fire, but she feels she can help him and she goes for it—even though she knows she’s endangering her own heart as she fixes his.

Recipe for Carrie's Chicken Picatta included.

Well, here we are at the end of this fun tour for the sweet editions of the Destiny Bay series.  I love that this author has taken her books, changed them up a bit so those of us who prefer the sweeter, softer side of romance can enjoy these stories as well.  (see her explanation below) I hope this is the beginning of a new trend for romance authors!

I will say that of the three books I've read and reviewed, this one flirted more closely with the edge of clean for me.  While there was no sex, the innuendo was high.  Grant has lived in a world of careless sex and there is plenty of talk about it.  There was mild swearing as well.

The attraction, chemistry and emotion in this book are on high at all times.  I felt like Grant was egotistical and, quite honestly, a jerk most of the time.  Carrie just keeps coming back for more though.  Is she naive or just a glutton for punishment?  She doesn't seem as bothered by Grant's past actions as I think a lot of women might be especially considering his lack of remorse.  The relationship felt imbalanced for most of the book but I did enjoy the ending- especially when all the couples from the three books meet back up.  It was a great way to wrap up to the family series.

A Little About the Destiny Bay Romances: Sweet Editions
From Author Helen Conrad

"The Destiny Bay Romances take place in the sort of beach town I've always loved--and now I live in one! But writing about beach towns came first and this series is centered on the rich, influential Carrington family living along the California Coast, and in Hawaii. These are good-looking, fast-driving, hard-hitting men and women whose impulses lead them into trouble every time--and inevitably to fall in love.

The original series includes language and love scenes that aren't, for the most part, especially harsh and explicit--but some of my readers from my years writing sweets for Harlequin as Raye Morgan have asked if we couldn't have sweet and clean versions--and I thought--what a good idea!

These are basically the same stories...but with the conflicts softened a bit, the language cleaned up, and no explicit love scenes. There are still a few adult situations, but they're muted. Consider these the PG versions.

I hope you enjoy them!"
