Six Missives (At Home In Brighton) by Rachael Anderson

Miss Michelle Ellington despises the founder of a competing school for young ladies. Already, he has lured away two teachers and seems intent on wreaking havoc upon her school, all while the headmistress is away. She’s never met the man, but the few missives they’ve exchanged have told her exactly the sort of person he is—an underhanded cad.

Sir Miles Wentworth made a promise to his dying father and is driven to succeed. He'd be well on his way if he could just entice the reputable Miss Ellington to leave her current position and work for him. Unfortunately, her frigid reply makes it clear that his school would be the last place she’d ever seek employment.

When the pair encounter each other as strangers one evening, they form an instant connection. Smitten by the mysterious woman, Sir Miles sets out to romance her. What he soon discovers, however, is that the woman he is falling more in love with every day is the same woman who would like to make mincemeat of him.

Every time I read a book by author Rachael Anderson I am reminded why I love her writing so much.  Her books draw me in and wrap me up in a gentle, sweet way.

This story has so much banter.  I love witty banter!!  Chelle and Miles are both intelligent and independent.  They have an instant attraction but Chelle is keeping some distance and secrecy around herself.  Miles is pursuing her.  It made for some fun interactions.

Miles is so determined to prove himself to Chelle so she won't hate him.  He messed up.  He really did.  And then he bumbles so many things but his consistency and his kindness, not just to Chelle, but to everyone, is hard to ignore.  I simply adored Miles.  He tried so hard.

Things I loved:

  • dances on the beach
  • bunnies
  • a bundle of pencils
  • the boy with a dog named Lucifer
  • the talk with Chelle's dad
  • the ending
This is the second book in this series but these books can easily stand alone.

Five Kisses by Rachael Anderson

The first kiss crumbles her world. The second mystifies. The third unbalances. The fourth sends her reeling. And the fifth –ah, the fifth . . .

Inspired by Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, Miss Sarah Meacham has always behaved circumspectly, until an emotional outburst directed at a well-deserved gentleman earns her the nickname of Miss Shrew. As a result, she vows to never trust—or love—again. But when her father decrees that her younger sister cannot marry the man of her dreams until Sarah has secured a suitor of her own, she is faced with a dilemma: Deny her sister marital bliss or feign an interest in the next gentleman to come along, at least until their father relents.

Mr. Ian Collum is no gentleman. A tradesman and newcomer to Brighton, he has been searching high and low for the perfect house. When he at last discovers Ivy Cottage, with its magnificent views, extensive lands, and a large oak tree reminiscent of his favorite childhood escape, he will do whatever it takes to obtain it. Trouble is, the owner of the property will only sell if Ian agrees to court the beautiful and infamous Miss Shrew—a woman as intent on eluding Ian as he is on pursuing her.

I ADORE this book.  Absolutely adore it.  I want to read it again right now.

The book is literally broken up into five sections- Kiss One, Kiss Two right up to Kiss Five and then. . . BONUS KISS.  😍  Yeah, I love that.  I also love both Sarah and Ian.  How could I not love them?  Honestly.  I'm pretty sure I just loved everything about this book, including the cover.  It hit my sweet spot and it all made me so happy.  This was a fantastic day of reading.  Yes, I finished it in one day.  I just couldn't help myself.

My Brother's Bride (Serendipity #2) by Rachael Anderson +$25 Giveaway!

Abigail Nash leads a lonely existence. Her mother died giving birth to her, her father’s business dealings took him away more often than not, and her ailing great-aunt, unable to provide much in the way of companionship, was a lack-luster guardian at best. So when her dear friends offered to launch her into London society, it appeared Abby’s life was taking a turn for the better, with suitors and social engagements aplenty. When she marries a proclaimed darling of the ton, it seems she will at last settle into the life of her dreams. But appearances aren’t always what they seem, and dreams often become disappointments. Just months into her marriage, Abby finds herself widowed, penniless, increasing, and determined to never hope again. But when her late husband’s brother, the Earl of Brigston, attempts to thaw the numbness surrounding her heart, Abby must decide if she has it in her to risk another chance at happiness, knowing the odds are not in her favor.

Friends, it's always a good day when I get to read a new book by Rachael Anderson.  I've been reading her books since the very beginning and I love the way she has ventured out from contemporary romance into a new genre, regency, and made her place in it.  I am loving these regency romances so much.  I don't really think it's a genre thing though.  Rachael Anderson just writes in a way that I love.  Her books are so easy to settle in with and they just feel good to me.

I thought this story was perfectly paced.  The knowledge of the characters came bit by bit, just enough to keep my interest and curiosity peaked but giving me plenty of time to really settle in and get to know them more intimately so they felt like friends.  I loved the growing awareness between Abigail and Brigston and how gentle Brigston was with all things Abby related.  Abby is definitely someone who could use a bit of gentleness.

I loved this book.  💚

Content:  kissing, mention of a rape with some general details.

- I received a complimentary copy of this book.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Excerpt:
When Brigston entered the kitchen, Abby’s back was partially to him, so she didn’t immediately see him. Her brow was furrowed in concentration as she whipped something in a bowl. She paused to lift the spoon, only to frown at the white liquid dripping from it.
“Are you certain this will thicken into a cream?” she asked.
A flash of irritation crossed Monsieur Roch's face until he spotted Morgan and seemed to think better of it. He managed a patient tone in his accented French. “It takes time, my lady.”
Morgan stifled a chuckle as Abby examined another spoonful of the liquid. “I’ve been whipping it for several minutes, but it doesn’t seem even a little thicker to me. Have I forgotten to add something?”
“No,” said the cook in clipped tones.
Morgan stepped forward and leaned in close. “If your arm is tired—”
Abby jumped, and what liquid remained on the spoon splattered across Morgan’s face. She spun around, her eyes growing wide with horror when she saw what she’d done.
He wiped a dab from his nose and tasted it. “A little more sugar, perhaps?”
“Brigston! I’m so dreadfully sorry.” She dropped the spoon into the bowl and grabbed a rag from a nearby wash basin, dabbing it across his face.
“Not that rag!” cried the cook. “It was only just used to mop the floors.”
Abby dropped it as though it had burned her, and Morgan tried not to cringe at the thought of filthy water coating his face.
Monsieur Roch retrieved a clean rag and held it out to him, appearing apologetic. He flicked another irritated glance at Abby before returning to his work.
As Morgan wiped the cream from his face, he wondered what Abby would do or say next. Offer another fumbled apology? Make her excuses and flee? Pretend the incident never happened and return to her labors? He never knew what to expect from her.
Her face scarlet, she cleared her throat and lifted her adorably determined chin. “You are most welcome, my lord.”
He raised a brow. “For what, my lady?”
“I have heard that cream does wonders for one’s complexion, and it seems the rumors are correct. Your skin appears much . . . creamier.”

My Sister's Intended (Serendipity #1) by Rachael Anderson + $25 Giveaway

  https://amzn.to/2GOp7Ec

For as long as Prudence can remember, it has been understood that her sister will one day wed the eldest son of their nearest neighbor. Such an alliance will benefit both families and bring a great deal of joy to all parents involved. Unfortunately, Prudence has never been able to feel as joyful. She believes her sister is mad to consider marrying a man she hardly knows, even if he will one day make her a countess. Titles and wealth shouldn't factor into matters of the heart, and as an aspiring romance novelist, Prudence cannot fathom how anyone could even think of settling for less than love. She certainly wouldn’t, and she doesn't want her sister to either. Unable to stand by and do nothing, Prudence sets out to help the awkward couple discover the best in each other with the hope that they will eventually find love. What she neglected to foresee, however, was the possibility that she might fall in love with Lord Knave herself.

 https://amzn.to/2GOp7Ec
Ooh, this book!  It was so perfectly sweet from beginning to end.  I am a fan of Rachael Anderson and I love (lovey, love, love) her books.  Her characters are charming and full of life and personality.  I can so easily picture them- it's like I am right there with them.

I fell in love with Prudence- how could I not?  An avid reader and writer, full of imagination and spunk with an air of innocence about her, Prudence was fantastic.  She was also kind.  I loved her for that.

And Brand?  I absolutely adored him. (I wish I could make the word "adored" all bright and shiny with streams of light and sparkles coming from it!)

This gentle and sweet love story will steal your heart.  I'm so excited about this new series and I will be anxiously waiting for the next book.

Excerpt
When Prudence lifted her eyes to his again, they sparkled with a challenge. “I was going to save this question until later so as not to shock you from the get-go, but I really do need to know . . . What does it feel like to kiss a woman?”
A large lump formed in Brand’s throat, and his mouth went dry. What the deuce? She had promised not to ask questions that would make him uncomfortable, but already he wanted to flee like a frightened kitten. How could he possibly explain how it felt to kiss a woman?
Brand searched his mind for a way to avoid answering until he heard a snicker escape her lips. She was laughing at him. Him! Hildebrand Ethan Cannon, Viscount Knave—a man at least eight years her senior and a great deal higher in social standing.
Unbelievable.
“You are teasing me,” he said, hoping it was true. If she’d posed the question to make him squirm—and perhaps make him more inclined to answer her other questions—then she wouldn’t be expecting an answer.
She shook her head, still smiling. “I’m afraid not, my lord, although I did find the look of terror on your face vastly amusing.”
“I’m glad I could entertain you.”
“I hope you will be equally glad to instruct me on a few things as well. The first scene in my book will include a kiss, and I have no idea how to describe the experience. Do a woman’s lips feel warm or soft or even moist? Would your pulse quicken? Aside from touch, what other senses are engaged? How would it make you feel and what would you notice when you held a woman in your arms?”
If she thought he’d appeared terror-stricken before, there would be no word for how he looked now. Did she earnestly expect him to answer such questions? Surely even she knew how inappropriate it would be to discuss such things, her being an innocent.
“I cannot say,” he finally muttered.
Her brow puckered in confusion. “Have you never kissed a woman, my lord?”
Brand was sorely tempted to lie and say he had not, but he couldn’t bring himself to do so. Any man of six-and-twenty who had never experienced a kiss would be laughed out of his manhood. Women were expected to remain innocent until married. Men were not.
“Yes, I have kissed a woman,” he finally admitted, “but I have no intention of discussing any of the details with you.”
“Why not?” she asked, her large brown eyes blinking at him curiously. “Would you rather I invent the information?”
“Yes.”
She obviously didn’t appreciate his retort because she scowled. “Can you not tell me at least a little?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because a kiss could never be described with any sort of accuracy, at least not by me. It involves too many feelings and sensations and complexities of thought. If you wish to know what a kiss feels like, you’ll have to experience it for yourself.”
Too late, Brand realized his mistake. Her expression became contemplative, as though she was actually considering doing just that. Good gads, had he really just encouraged an innocent young woman to go hunting for a kiss? Who would she ask? A groom? Stablehand? The next peddler that came to town?
“I think you are right,” she said at last. “I really must experience a kiss for myself if I am to describe it with any sort of accuracy.” She blinked up at him with that innocent expression again. “Will you kiss me Lord Knave? No, how silly of me. You are to marry my sister, so that would never do.” She pursed her lips for a moment before musing, “Perhaps one of the footmen would be kind enough to show me how it’s done.”
Kind enough? Brand could think of a great many reasons a footman would comply with such a request, and kindness did not factor into any of them. Brand would kiss her himself before he allowed a footman near her.
He rubbed the bridge of his nose, feeling a headache coming on. “Perhaps I can try to explain what it feels like after all.” Better that than having her chase after a footman.
“But you only just said you couldn’t do it justice,” she pointed out. “I realize I sound dreadfully forward, but I really must know, and experience is the best teacher, is it not?”
“No, it isn’t,” he lied. “And you are not going to kiss a footman.”
“Then who? Felix or Lionel, perhaps? I’m fairly certain I can convince one of them to do it, if given the opportunity. The question is how to go about it?”
It was plain to see by the firm set of her jaw that she would not rest until she had experienced a kiss of her own. She didn’t seem to care who did the deed, only that the man did a thorough job of it. A quick peck on the lips wouldn’t satisfy her curiosities.
“Perhaps I could send a note to Felix and ask him to call on me,” she continued to muse. “We could take a stroll through the maze in the gardens. There is a hidden alcove on the south side, which could be quite perfect. We would have to evade Ruth, obviously, but—”
“Devil take it,” Brand growled as he pulled her to him. Her quick intake of breath was the only sound she made before his mouth covered hers.

The Pursuit of Lady Harriett by Rachael Anderson + $25 Giveaway!

When wills clash and hearts collide, who will reign victorious?

Termed an Incomparable during her first London season, Lady Harriett Cavendish is beautiful, spirited, and confident, capturing the attention of a great many suitors. Unfortunately, they all failed to capture her attention, and she concluded the season as unattached as she’d begun it.

Only weeks prior to her second season, Harriett encounters Lieutenant Christopher Jamison while visiting Tanglewood Manor. Recently returned from war, the lieutenant is everything that Harriett's previous suitors were not. He’s arrogant, ungentlemanly, irritating, and challenges her at every opportunity. When he goes too far, Harriett decides that it’s time to turn the tables on him. But as she sets out to put the lieutenant in his place once and for all, she discovers there is more to him than meets the eye, and when it comes to matters of the heart, she has no control whatsoever.

Rachael Anderson is one of my favorite authors no matter the genre she is writing in.  Any day I get to read one of her books is a great day.  I was really looking forward to this book because the previous two books in this series have been fabulous!  You don't have to read this series in order as each book can stand alone easily, but I would recommend you read in order if you can.  It just helps with loving the characters.  :)

I was a bit worried in the beginning of this book because Harriett was such a brat!  I thought, "oh no, I don't like her at all!"  And in the beginning of the book, I really didn't like her.  She was mean.  Christopher was a bit oblivious, but not really deserving of all she dished out to him in the beginning.  This started a bit of a war of sorts- each trying to up the other one because Christopher is not one to stand there and take anything.  It was a bit amusing, I have to say.  There was some excellent banter and some sparky moments of romantic tension.  Harriett grew on me- especially as her softer side began to emerge.  I loved Christopher from the beginning.  He's a funny guy.  And so very oblivious.

The ending was superb.  There was such a build up throughout the book which made the ending ever so satisfying.  I loved it.  This book was engaging and fun the whole way through.

If you haven't read this series, you need to.  It's so, so good!

Enjoy the following excerpt!

Harriett looked at what remained of the cake. Apparently, he didn’t intend to finish it off after all, so she collected their forks and stood. “Forgive me for saying so, but you look quite done in, Chris. If you do not go up to bed now, you will probably fall asleep here. Only imagine what Mrs. Caddy might say if she discovers you here with the mostly-eaten cake. For your own sake, you ought to retire. I will do my best to tidy things up.”

Before she could move away from him, he grabbed her hand and guided her to sit back down, keeping hold of her fingers. “Not so fast, my lady. I meant it when I said that I’m in desperate need of the distraction that only you can provide. Thus far, all I have done is burden you with my troubles.”

“I do not feel at all burdened, sir.” Indeed, Harriett suddenly felt breathless and somewhat giddy. The effect this man had on her was something of a wonder.

“Sir?” he asked. “I thought we were beyond that.”

“I thought so as well, but you only just called me ‘my lady.’”

He frowned and blinked as though he hadn’t realized he had. “Forgive me, Harry. I fear my exhaustion has muddled my thinking.”

This time, she did not let the name slide. She snatched her hand free and frowned at him. “Obviously it has.”

He laughed—not a tired attempt at a laugh, but a real one filled with the richness that warmed her straight through. Only this time, it did not bother her at all. In fact, it felt wonderful, almost like a compliment.

“I knew you’d come through for me,” he said, leaning close enough to touch shoulders with her. “You have no idea how much I needed to laugh or how good that felt. I could honestly kiss you right now.”

Harriett tried her best not to blush or appear astonished by the suggestion—he had obviously made the comment in jest—but when his smile widened into a devilish grin, she knew she’d failed. He leaned in closer, and his gaze wandered briefly to her mouth before returning to her eyes. She could smell vanilla and lemon and a hint of something else—leather perhaps? A delightful pulse whipped down her arm, and she was hard-pressed not to shiver.

“Admit it,” he said. “You have missed me.”

The Rise of Miss Notley (Tanglewood #2) by Rachael Anderson

To escape an undesirable match, Miss Notley must give up her riches for rags.

When Miss Coralynn Notley’s father barters her off to the first titled gentleman to come along, she realizes she must flee her home or be forced to wed a despicable man. Driven by desperation, she applies for the position of housekeeper at Tanglewood Manor, the home of the handsome Mr. Jonathan Ludlow.

The moment Jonathan sees Miss Notley, he is intrigued. She is far too young and inexperienced, yet there is something about her that that inspires a certain hope within him. Does he dare offer her the position of housekeeper or will doing so result in catastrophe?

This book made me happy!  I love Rachael Anderson's books- she is one of my favorite authors.  Her delve into regency romance has been fantastic but I hope she won't give up her contemporary romances.  I love those too.  This is the second book in this Tanglewoood series and can stand alone but you will feel more connected to the secondary characters if you read the books in order.

Jonathan is a goner from the first moment he sees Coralynn.  Her arrival in his home throws everything off course.  Coralynn is a ray of sunshine but has a knack for getting herself into the middle of every mess in the house.  I love how Coralynn sees the good and defends the underdog.  She cannot let any injustice go and marches a bit to the beat of her own drum- no matter what.  So many of the scenes between Jonathan and Coralynn were amusing to me.  Poor Jonathan didn't know what way was up half of the time.

The characters were fun and so easy to settle in with.  By the end of the book I felt like I knew them well and they were old friends.  Rachael has a knack for doing this in all of her books.  We get a little taste of what's to come in the next book in this series and I cannot wait.  I bet sparks will be flying all over the place!

The Fall of Lord Drayson (Tanglewood Book 1) by Rachael Anderson

Who is he really? A high and mighty lord or a lowly servant?

When Colin Cavendish, the new earl of Drayson, informs Lucy Beresford that she and her mother need to vacate the house they've called home for the past two years, Lucy is fit to be tied. They have no money, no relations they can turn to for help, and nowhere to go. How dare the earl break the promise his father had made to the Beresfords without so much as a twinge of conscience?

Fate plays her hand when Lucy discovers the earl unconscious and injured in the middle of the road. When he awakens with no recollection of who he is, Lucy seizes the opportunity to teach the earl a much-needed lesson in humility and tells him that he is nothing more than a mere servant. Her servant, in fact.

And thus begins the charming tale of a pompous lord and an impetuous young woman, caught together in a web so tangled that it begs the question: Will they ever get out?

Rachael Anderson?  I love you.

I know this probably seems redundant coming from me but Rachel Anderson writes books so perfectly for me.  Every single time.  It is so easy to settle right in with Rachael's books and just stay there from beginning to end.  This is her first dip into the regency genre and I am so, so happy.  She did it!  She did it!  She really, really did it!  :)  And I am just as in love with her regency as I am with her contemporary books.

I love the set up for this book.  It starts out with the Earl of Drayson, kind of full of himself, delivering a notice to vacate to Lucy.  Lucy, in a moment of pure human frustration, takes advantage of the Earl's misfortune and capitalizes on it.  She is determined to teach that high and mighty Lord a lesson or two.

It is all so comical and Lucy is quite pleased with herself until she finds herself falling for Drayson.  Oops.  That wasn't supposed to happen.  And in her growing web of lies, she doesn't know how to make things right again.

I read through this book so quickly.  I loved every single minute of it.  Lucy is such a fun character- full of life and love.  I couldn't help but smile through most of this book.  Drayson actually surprised me.  I didn't much care for him in the beginning but even when I began liking him, he still surprised me.  I love when that happens.

So, it's a big, fat LOVE from me for this book.  I really, really hope that Rachael is working on the next book and that I will get to read it soon!

Not Always Happenstance (Power of the Matchmaker) by Rachael Anderson + $50 Giveaway

  Not Always Happenstance

Lani has lived in Hana, Hawaii for five years. She’s learned to surf, fish, dive, and manage her grandmother’s bed and breakfast. She’s also learned to take one day at a time the way it should be taken—relaxed and unrushed, savoring every moment. But, like a large wave on the brink of breaking, her life is about to crash out of control. A proposal of marriage, a conniving grandmother, a cryptic Asian woman, and a handsome guest, and suddenly everything calm begins to churn, everything clear becomes confused, and all that was normal segues into peculiar. As Lani struggles against the current to hold her ground, she realizes that she can either continue to fight and eventually lose, or take a take a leap of faith, hold her breath, and ride the wave wherever it takes her. ***This book is part of the Power of the Matchmaker series that features one recurring character—the match maker—but it is a STAND-ALONE novel.***

There are so many things I'm feeling the love for right now.  This book, this series and this author.  I will gladly (and greedily) take anything written by Rachael Anderson and eat it right up.  She is one of my very favorites in the author world and I love reading her books.

This series is so awesome.  I knew it would be.  Each book is by a different author and can stand alone.  No book is dependent on the other although I would suggest reading the prequel novella because it introduces the matchmaker who makes an appearance in all the books.  She is the common thread in all the books in this series, but each book is it's own story and I love that.

In this book I took a trip to Hawaii.  Maui to be exact.  I've been to Hawaii twice, but I haven't been to Maui yet.  Someday, I hope.

Lani is a fantastic character.  I fell in love with her.  She is adaptable, witty and so sweet to her grandmother.  Her loyalty and kindness is refreshing.  It was Lani's moments of doubt and then courage that really connected me to her.

The Hawaiian culture was interwoven so seamlessly into this book.  I could feel, hear, smell and taste as I read.  This book created some lovely pictures in my head.

I loved this book.  It's one of my favorites.

I am always, always positively giddy when I get to read a new book by Rachael Anderson.  She is one of my all time favorite authors.  The way she writes just clicks with me and takes me right to my happy place.

I've been looking forward to reading Sam's story from the beginning of this series.  Sam is a fun loving, happy girl.  She knows how to enjoy life but she also knows how to work hard and love well.  She is someone I would like to be friends with.  Colten is more like Sam than she thinks.  He also is loyal and hard working.  Not to mention handsome.  There is just something about cowboys.

The connection between Sam and Colten is fantastic.  I liked how things progressed between them.  It felt natural and normal.  I bought into their relationship and felt personally invested in their outcome.  It was also good to have characters from previous books around in this book.  It really felt like settling in with old friends.
