Crown and Serpent: A Fate of Eyrinthia Novella by Heather Frost

Genre: YA Fantasy (Villain Origin Story)

Series: Fate of Eyrinthia (Prequel)

Release Date: August 25, 2023

All she wanted . . .

Seventeen-year-old Iris Winn loves her quiet life with her father, studying the poisons that fascinate them both. But after his sudden death, Iris is now the ward of her estranged aunt and uncle. In order to claim her inheritance, she must live in the capital city of Lenzen for one year. While there, she must attend parties, balls, and participate in every other vapid thing the elite of Ryden value. Iris doesn’t care about learning their rules or joining their ranks–her only goal is to endure the next year. Then she meets Prince Henri Kaelin.

Everything they demanded . . .

Every young woman in Lenzen wants Henri–except for Iris. Unfortunately, the prince only has eyes for her. The king has decreed that Henri must choose a bride before his birthday, and Iris is determined it won’t be her. Dodging a prince’s focused attention while placating her relatives and the rest of Ryden’s high society is exhausting–and more dangerous than Iris could have ever imagined. She is about to learn that not all games are innocent, and some smiles are more lethal than poison. Luckily, Iris is a quick study, and this is a game she is determined to win.

She would take it all.

*Crown & Serpent is a Fate of Eyrinthia prequel novella that’s actually the length of a novel. This villain origin story was released after Royal Rebel, but it can be read at any point in the series.*

 * Amazon * Goodreads *

Here it is!  The backstory for King Henri (booooo) and Queen Iris (booooo) who are the most evil, horrible, awful, terrible villains in a series that I absolutely love.  I was equally terrified and excited heading into this story and rightly so.  (Yikes! Haha.)  But how can you turn down a chance at a glimpse into how these two people not only came together but came to reign with such terror and evil?  I couldn't.  Ugh.  It was SO, SO good.

This author does such a good job at weaving this backstory for Henri (booooo) and Iris (booooo) that is so believable.  You can see the events that triggered them and shaped into warped things in their minds.  It's like a train wreck you can't look away from.  And can I just say something here?  Poisons are SCARY!!

I was surprised at a few things and caught off guard with others.  In the end, I was completely satisfied and felt justified with my hatred for Henri (booooo) and Iris (booooo).  I'm not giving away more details because I want you to experience this for yourself.  If you haven't started this series, what are you waiting for?!?!  It's seriously one of my very favorites.

Content:  peril, violence, death.  Kissing.

- I received a complimentary copy of this book.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Royal Rebel (Fate of Eyrinthia #4) by Heather Frost and an Interview with Grayson!!

A PRINCE fighting to save a princess
A SERJAH torn between duty and desire
A PRINCESS willing to sacrifice everything
A DECOY with nothing to lose
A WORLD about to be torn apart

After his father’s latest punishment, Grayson isn’t at his full strength. Trapped in Ryden and surrounded by enemies, he knows escaping with Mia will be more complicated than anticipated. Tyrell is determined to claim Mia for himself, and Henri’s plans for the rest of Eyrinthia are more horrific than Grayson ever imagined. Despite the increased danger, he and Mia must return to Mortise and warn Desfan of what’s coming—even though it may already be too late.

In Mortise, the palace is still reeling from the brutal attack that left many dead and even more wounded. Regardless of the chaos, Desfan is determined to continue with his coronation. As serjan, he hopes to bring stability to his country and solidify the peace with Devendra. But things in Eyrinthia are always complicated. When Prince Liam reveals they may be facing dangers from old enemies, Desfan will have to decide what kind of ruler he will be.

Devastating news from home has left Clare broken. Despite her heartache, she must once again be Serene’s decoy when a terrifying report sends the princess on an unexpected mission to Zennor. Left at the palace, Clare helps Desfan build trust with the elite in Mortise while guarding a treasonous secret. Because as her grief transforms into a burning desire for vengeance, she is finally ready to embrace a new role—rebel.

Eyrinthia is consumed by uncertainty. Duty. Desire. Sacrifice. Every rebellion has its cost.

If you follow me at all you know that I LOVE this series.  It really encompasses all the things I love when I pick up a book.  Well, I don't love cliff hangers, but I guess that's what you get in a series.  You can't have it all at once.  It's worth the wait in between because these characters are so familiar to me.  I know them.  I want good things for them.  I NEED to see them safe and happy.  I am clearly emotionally connected to them.

This book is yet another in the ongoing saga of many characters in many places.  They intersect at times and join forces at times but still the danger and political intrigue takes them to various places.  So many terrible things are happening.  The characters struggle and suffer.  It makes my heart hurt.  But there are small victories and growing love that makes it feel happy too.  I really can't say too many specific things because I don't want to give anything away.  Just know that I loved this book.  I started reading it the day I got it because I just couldn't wait.  It was everything I knew it would be and once again left me desperate for more.

My favorite character is Grayson.  It's honestly hard to pick just one favorite but he's really the one I'm most emotionally attached to which is why I'm SO EXCITED to share with you an interview with Grayson!!  Woot!!

Hello, Grayson. So excited to sit down with you today. I think everyone is anxiously awaiting catching up with you in Royal Rebel. We left you in a very terrible place. Can you tell us how you’re doing?

I’m fine. And I’m back with Mia, which means I can finally breathe again. And I’m just as determined to rescue her from my family, no matter what my father has done to me.

A lot has happened to you since you left Ryden. How do you think you’ve changed?

I think I gained perspective, and I certainly gained confidence while being away from Ryden and my parents. I’ve learned a lot about myself and the world. I’ve wanted to rebel against my parents for a very long time. But now I’m finally ready to do it. I will not be their pawn anymore.

Mortisian culture is very different from your own. What was the biggest difference for you?

Honestly, everything. The entire atmosphere is completely different. There’s a life and vibrancy in Mortise that doesn’t exist in Ryden. Maybe it never did, or maybe my family just managed to smother it. But everything in Mortise is colorful and alive. It can be overwhelming, and chaotic, and I’m not always comfortable with it. But there is a part of me that enjoys it.

What was your favorite food you tried in Mortise? What was your least favorite?

Some of the breads are nice. I hate fish, though. It tastes wrong, no matter what they do to prepare it. Actually, I think the spices they sometimes use make it worse.

You have developed an unexpected friendship with Imara, and I personally have really enjoyed seeing that play out. What three words would you use to describe her?

Oh fates, Imara is . . . How can I describe someone like Imara in three words? Her presence is larger than life. But if I had to pick three . . . Enthusiastic, kindhearted, and bold.

What keeps you awake at night?

Fear for those I care about. Mia has always topped that list, but the list keeps growing, which means I’ve had a lot of sleepless nights.

A confrontation is coming between you and your family—specifically your parents. Are you nervous about that?

Yes. Of course. It would be foolish of me not to feel nervous. But I think I’ve known for a long time that this would be my fate. I’m not like them, and a confrontation was inevitable. I don’t know how everything will play out, and my priority right now is Mia’s safety. But that confrontation is coming, and I think a part of me is eager for it. I’m ready to stand up to them. I’m ready for them to be afraid of me.

You recently learned that Tyrell saved Mia’s life, and he’s been her defender while you’ve been in Mortise. More than that, you know he has developed feelings for her. How does all of this make you feel?

I’m grateful that he protected her, but I don’t trust him, and I never will. I can’t. I can’t fully blame him for being drawn to Mia—anyone would be—but from what I’ve seen of Tyrell . . . I just don’t think he’s capable of loving someone.

Mia has admitted that she considers Tyrell a friend. How does that make you feel?

Confused. Maybe a little hurt, as well. Even taking me and my history with Tyrell out of this, I don’t understand how Mia could feel anything but hatred for Tyrell. He abused her. She may have found a way past that, but I never will.

Your father gave Tyrell an order to hurt Mia. Do you really think he could have refused? You’ve been put in terrible situations before. Don’t you have sympathy for him in that situation?

No, I don’t. Because there’s a very big difference between Tyrell and me. Yes, I’ve been forced to do terrible things for my father. Things I will never forgive myself for. But everything I’ve done, I’ve done to keep Mia safe. Tyrell chose to hurt Mia because he wanted to please our father. Period. And that is despicable in every way.

You’ve got some complicated family dynamics. How are you feeling about your brother Liam?

Complicated is a good word for my family, and it definitely applies to Liam. He was the one brother I thought I could trust, and then he betrayed me. He threatened me by threatening Mia’s life—but then I got to Ryden and learned he never sent orders to kill her. He wanted to abduct her. I’m not sure why, and I’m not sure if it even matters. I can say that I’m glad he’s locked up in Mortise, because he is definitely dangerous. But I’m hoping I can talk to him at some point and learn why he’s done what he has.

Thank you for speaking to us today, Prince Grayson! I can’t wait to check in with you again in Royal Rebel!

Wasn't that awesome?!  Sigh, I just love Grayson.  I need his happily ever after so badly!!  It sure doesn't happen in this book but I have hope that it's coming.  Some day.

The first book in the Fate of Eyrinthia series, Royal Decoy, is on sale right now for just $.99!  If you haven't started, this is a great time to pick up the first book and get reading!

Content for Royal Rebel:  violence, death, drug addiction, peril, kissing.

Woot, woot!  It's release day for this new book, Esperance, by Heather Frost!!  I've been anxiously awaiting this day since I found out about this book.  I really love books like this and I never feel like I can find enough of them.  I'm so glad this author is writing books in this genre.  I've loved everything she has written so far.  (If you haven't read the Fate of Eyrinthia series yet, you really must.  It's one of my favorites!!)

How can I sum up this book?  Political intrigue.  Enemies to lovers.  Forbidden magic.  Mystery.  Danger.  Are you interested yet?!  You should be because this book is so good!  This author does a fantastic job of introducing a whole cast of characters without making me feel overwhelmed.  I felt like I knew each character as a distinct personality.  That's hard to do with many characters in a story, especially right away.  This story builds and builds in intensity and it was really hard to put it down.  I'm invested.  I'm intrigued.  I want more.

Oh, and I love Carver.  He's exactly the type of hero that I love.  Strong, determined, loyal, brave.  A little bit tortured too, which tugs at my heartstrings.  He has patience and willpower.  How could I not love him?!?!  <sigh>

This is book one in a trilogy so the story isn't over and will continue in the next book.  Of course we are left with a cliffhanger but thankfully, I didn't feel as desperate as I have with other books by this author.  I really cannot wait for the next book.  And the next.  I wish I had them right now!!  But cheers to something good to look forward to.

Good news!  This book is on KU if you have it.

Content:  violence, peril, death.  Kissing.

- I received a complimentary copy of this book.  I have since purchased my own copy.  All opinions expressed are my own.

“Your body will adapt,” Carver said.

Amryn glanced over at him as they made their way down a wide stone staircase. “Excuse

me?”

“To the climate. The humidity is brutal, but you will adapt over time.”

She snorted. “If I don’t melt first.”

He felt a smile tug into place. “I felt the same in Harvari. But you will get used to it.”

“Forgive me if I don’t believe you. Isn’t Westmont unconscionably hot as well?”

“Compared to Ferradin, I suppose it might be considered that. I just think of it as the

warmth of home.”

“Ferradin can be warm,” Amryn said, swiping a quick hand over her hairline. “This

rivals the Scorched Plains.”

He chuckled. “I suppose it’s a matter of perspective.”

They reached the base of the stairs and turned right, following the directions they’d been

given. Other than a handful of guards and servants, they didn’t see anyone else in the

long corridor.

Wanting to keep her talking, Carver said, “I miss the ocean, and the sandy beaches of

Westmont. What do you miss from home?”

“Everything,” she whispered.

Her melancholy was like a barb against his skin, and he winced. A poor choice of topic

on his part, when she was clearly homesick.

She peeked over at him. “I miss the mountains.”

The admission was unexpected after her previous one-word response, but he grasped at

it gratefully. “Westmont doesn’t have many mountains, at least not near my home. I

remember the first time I traveled with my father and we came across a true mountain

range. I was terrified.”

She shot him a look. “Why?”

“I thought it would fall on top of me and crush me flat.” He shrugged. “I was only a

child, so it seemed a valid fear at the time.”

The ghost of a smile lifted her lips. “So mountains no longer scare you?”

“I didn’t say that. Frankly, I always feel a little trapped whenever I find myself

surrounded by them.” Her smile was proof that she was relaxing around him, but that

fact alone wasn’t what kept him talking. He found he enjoyed talking with her—liked

coaxing those rare smiles from her. “Mountains also steal the sunlight prematurely, and

they block the view of the rest of the world. And have you ever climbed one?”

“Don’t tell me that the emperor’s favored general is afraid of heights,” she said, one

eyebrow raised.

He scoffed. “As if I’m the one with an issue if I have a rational fear of falling off a cliff

and plunging to my death?”

“You know,” she said a bit drolly, “I grew up playing on mountains.”

“Then it’s a blessing from the Divinities that you’re still alive.”

She rolled her eyes at that, but she wore an amused smile. “Has anyone ever told you

that you’re overly dramatic?”

“Yes. Just about everyone,” he added, making his tone as dramatic as possible.

He didn’t get a full laugh out of her, but she made a sound in her throat that could have

been the beginnings of one.

Perhaps charming his wife wouldn’t be as difficult as he’d feared.

He glanced over at her. “Why do you miss the mountains?”

His more serious tone chased away her smile, but she didn’t miss a step as they neared

the end of the corridor. “I feel lost without them,” she said, and he was surprised by the

honesty in her voice. “They’ve always surrounded me. Given me landmarks. When I’m

surrounded by mountains, I feel . . . safe.”

Something she clearly didn’t feel here.

Not that he blamed her. Esperance had already been a place of death, and they’d only

been married for a day.

She peeked over at him. “Why do you miss the ocean?”

He shrugged. “I hadn’t really thought about it . . . but I suppose I miss everything about

it. The sound of it, the smell of it—the way it goes on forever.” The ocean comforted him.

Reminded him of better days. Sometimes, in Harvari, he would close his eyes and try to

picture it. The salty air, the spray hitting his face, the gritty sand clinging to his bare feet.

The glitter of the water.

Sometimes, he could almost imagine the sweat and blood on his skin was water. Only

water.

“You miss it because the ocean is home,” she said quietly.

He glanced at her. “And that’s why you miss the mountains.”

Her steps slowed as they reached the breakfast room. Beyond the arched doorway,

Carver could hear the hum of voices, and the scents of breakfast wafted into the hall. But

he paused with Amryn, the two of them standing alone in the hall.

This moment felt weighted, and he wanted to say the right thing.

“My father described the mountains of Ferradin,” he found himself sharing. “How snow

can top the peaks even in summer, making them a vivid blue and white on top, but

covered in trees and cliffs and wildflowers everywhere else. They sound breathtaking.”

Amryn stared at him, and as her eyes slowly narrowed, he felt a sinking in his gut.

“Your father has only been to Ferradin once, I think,” she said quietly. “To conquer it.”

She stepped around him and entered the breakfast room, leaving him standing alone in

the hall.

Shield and Blade: A Fate of Eyrinthia Novella by Heather Frost

His to protect

When Vera broke Venn’s heart, he was shattered. When she was abducted by mercenaries, he vowed to tear Mortise apart to find her. Now, reunited, he is determined to keep her safe–and win back her heart. Of course, things are never that simple.

Hers to defend

Vera has regretted hurting Venn ever since that fateful night in Wexon, but finding the right time to tell him is proving difficult. Traveling with him to Duvan should give her the perfect opportunity, but things take an unexpected turn when they find young children abandoned near a roadside.

Theirs to save

Helping the children isn’t in question, but the detour leads Venn and Vera into the heart of a sinister mystery. The truth they fight to uncover could change everything in Eyrinthia–and may cost them their lives.

Shield & Blade is book 3.5 in the Fate of Eyrinthia YA fantasy romance series. It is best enjoyed after reading Royal Captive.

It's no secret that I love this series.  I seriously tell anyone who will listen to me.  So of course I am excited about this new novella (which is honestly long enough to be a novel) and even more excited because it fills in a part of the story from Royal Captive that we were left wondering about.  It's Vera and Venn's story!!

I'm not even a bit embarrassed to say that I sat in my comfy chair all day and devoured this book.  I read it from beginning to end with almost no interruptions.  How lucky is that?!  I adore both Vera and Venn.  And when those children enter the picture?  The adoration levels skyrocketed.  Through the roof.  The danger keeps coming, relentless in nature, but Vera and Venn hold steady.  They are strong, loyal, brave and kind.  The very best kind of heroes.

Love, love, love, love.  💙

Content:  violence, peril, death, mention of torture.  Kissing.

- I received a complimentary copy of this book but have since bought my own copy.  All opinions expressed are my own.

You know what?  I can't even anything right now.  Just AARRRGGG!  So much hair pulling frustration and desperation.  Why do you do this to me, author Heather Frost?!  Why?!

Ugh.  Okay.  Review.

Gripping.  Heart pounding.  Utterly consuming. My heart is screaming right now, "GREYSON!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Secrets, secrets, secrets.  Lies, lies, lies.  And oh, the betrayals.

This is book three.  You MUST read this series in order or you will be completely and utterly lost.  There are so many characters and stories that happen on their own but all blend in to the same story line.  It's all colliding all over the place and if you don't start at book one, there really is no point.  But please, for the love, start book one if you haven't already.  Book one, Royal Decoy, is actually FREE right now so yay, no excuses!  Find it HERE.

This is one of my favorite series right now despite how mean this author is to me to always end each book in the worst places making me crazy and desperate, unable to think of anything else.  Seriously.  If I am this worked up it really is all a credit to the author.  She's doing an excellent job of creating a world filled with people that I have strong emotions for one way or another.  I'm wholly invested in the story and the outcome and everything in between.  I need the next book, like, RIGHT NOW.

This whole series is available on Kindle Unlimited.

Content:  violence (lots of it), some graphic in nature.  Torture.  Peril, kissing.

- I received a complimentary copy of this book.  All opinions expressed are my own.
