A Season to Love ( A Love in Lenox Novel) by Nicole Deese

At this point in her life, bravery is not a trait Willa Hart would readily claim. She believes her seven-year-old daughter, Savannah, who never knew her father and successfully tackled chemotherapy, is truly the courageous one. Yet after Willa has a fateful encounter with handsome young doctor Patrick McCade, her outlook—and her view of herself—begins to change.

Patrick, a thrill-seeking world traveler and temporary resident of Lenox, Oregon, sets out to show Willa the value of adventure, even within her tiny town. But just when their friendship shows signs of turning into something more, Patrick’s life as a traveling doctor calls him back. Will his last days in town signal the end of their journey, or will Patrick and Willa find the courage to transform a single season into a lifetime?

When your book world friends start raving about a book and an author, you listen.  Then you run as fast as your fingers can take you to every review place you have access to in order to secure a review copy to read for yourself.  Well, this may not be how it works for you but this is how it works for me and this is exactly how it happened for me and this book.  (Thank you NetGalley and Waterfall Press!)

A Season to Love is just classic clean romance.  It has all the elements I look for when reading.  The characters were real and personable.  They had strengths and flaws.  They make mistakes and they have moments of absolute awesome.  There was emotion and feeling that drew me in and kept me so invested in not just the characters, but the story and most especially, the ending.

Willa is scared.  There isn't any other good way to put it.  She has been through an awful lot and to some degree it's understandable, but the problem is, once you start shutting people out and living life in a bubble of fear, it becomes habit and you become even more scared.  That's how Patrick finds Willa and because of his adventurous life- full of living and exploring- he is determined to help Willa break out of her cage and really live.

Friendship is the base of Patrick and Willa's relationship.  They move slowly because that is the only way Willa can move.  It was so good, so satisfying, to see Patrick's patience and Willa's transformation.

There is also great cast of supporting characters in this book.  That's so important.

I really enjoyed reading this book.  I ran out right away and picked up a previous book by this author ( A Cliche Christmas) which I am looking forward to reading.  I actually got it from Amazon and added the audible for only $1.99.  This will be one for the car!  :)

His Kind of Cowgirl by Karen Rock

Would he still love her…if he knew?

Tanner Hayes smashed Claire's life to pieces when he chose the rodeo over her ten years ago. And now he'd wrecked her truck! Fantastic. She'd lost her husband, the family ranch was mired in debt, her father was recuperating from a stroke and her son was being bullied. Why not throw a reckless bull rider into the mix?

All she'd wanted was a safe, stable life. But with Tanner back in town—and staying on her ranch—nothing was safe, or under control. Not the feelings she'd fought so hard to forget. Not the son she was determined to protect. And certainly not her long-held secret…

 * Goodreads * Amazon *

When I saw that Karen Rock had a new book coming out through Harlequin Heartwarming I clicked right over to find a review copy to read!  (Thank  you NetGalley and Harlequin!)  Karen Rock is one of my favorite authors in the Harlequin Heartwarming line.  I love her books, every single time.  This book is no exception.

I'm telling you, there is just something about cowboys.  Bull riding, risk taking, lonely cowboys.  For Claire, cowboys are the love them and leave them type and she has no use for them.  Her heart has been crushed once and she's not going to allow it to happen a second time- especially by the same man.

Tanner is looking for connections.  He is looking for roots.  After being hurt riding bulls, he heads back to the one place he felt love.  Yes, he's a bit slow on the uptake but I loved how Tanner just jumps in and starts proving himself right from the beginning.  He helps Claire grow in confidence.

Oh, the mistakes.  The misunderstandings.  The secrets and the pride.  All of those things add to the sizzle moments, the growing bonds and the truth to make the end product so, so sweet.  This was a fantastic clean romance.  Love!

Write Me Home by Crystal Walton

He lives by his heart. She lives by her plans. Until they lose control of both.

Returning to his hometown in the Catskills is the last thing firefighter Ethan DeLuca’s ready for. He’d rather leave memories where they belong—buried under ashes. But if he doesn’t step up to take care of Nonna, who will? Working at the camp down the road seems like the perfect solution. Until his feisty redheaded boss ends up being one fire he has no idea how to put out.

Cassidy McAdams is on a mission. Get the camp Grandpa left her ready to sell, turn enough profit to bail Mom’s business out of foreclosure, and hightail it back to her life in New York City. With unexpected complications mounting, she can’t afford any distractions. Especially a ridiculously charming one who’s eager to rescue her at every turn.

It’d be easier on them both to hide behind professional boundaries. But when unexplained attacks on the camp ignite a connection between them they can’t ignore, running away is no longer an option.

 * Amazon * Goodreads *

Um, yummy.  Ethan DeLuca is yummy.  You should read this book and discover his yummy-ness too.  Ethan is everything I love in a strong male lead.  He is the man who fixes things.  He tries to protect and help.  He is loyal and did I mention strong?  :)  Yeah, he is good and a little bit broken.  It makes him so yummy.

Cassidy is also strong but in a different way.  Loving her came in bits for me but it happened.  She struggles with trust and love so her strength keeps people out to protect herself.  She had the biggest character arch though and it was very satisfying to see.

I loved the chemistry between Ethan and Cassidy.  It was always there, sparking- even when nothing was happening.  There was depth to the characters and a real human, real feel about them.  It felt good.

I'm really hoping to see another book along these lines for Cassidy's best friend, Ti.  She is someone who needs a happily ever after!

I really enjoyed this book.  I read through it quickly and felt satisfaction at the conclusion.

The Spider and the Sparrow by A.L. Sowards + $25 and Book Giveaway

May 1915. After tragedy strikes during the Second Battle of Artois, Frenchman Julian Olivier will do anything to get out of the trenches. So when British Intelligence recruits him to spy behind enemy lines, he jumps at the opportunity. Just before he begins, however, he has a chance encounter with a young French woman who leaves his heart marked for the remainder of the war—even if he doesn’t know her name.

Warren Flynn is a Canadian airborne hero, and dogfights with the Germans are all in a day’s work. Second only to his love of flying is his fascination with Claire Donovan, the daughter of an American munitions manufacturer living in Paris. Warren flies Julian into Germany and soon receives orders to post the Allies’ newest operative—an attractive peasant woman named Evette—in Claire’s home.

As a dangerous ring of spies and saboteurs threatens to turn the war against the Allies, Julian discovers goodness in his enemies’ hearts. But even if he survives, will he ever be reunited with the woman whose memory he can’t erase? Will Warren survive the war, and will Evette unearth the infiltrator in her own territory before it’s too late?

Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres.  I love when stories are based on real events in history and take me to a place I've never been before.  I think it's so important to remember events like WWII and the people who fought and lost so much.  It was such a terrible time in history- so much suffering.

This book brings in characters from several countries and follows them in their separate plights that eventually all link together.  It incorporates the ground battles, the air men and their dog fights, and the spies.  The author does a fantastic job of making the characters so human and real- on all sides of the war.

I wouldn't say this book is a desperate page turner as the story progresses in a more gentle, fluid way.  Things develop slowly but I was never bored or feeling impatient.  The people and places were set up vividly in my mind and I enjoyed the gradual coming together of the events and characters.

The Hunter's Moon (The Secret Warrior #1) by Beth Trissel

Seventeen-year-old Morgan Daniel has been in the witness protection program most of her life. But The Panteras have caught up with her and her younger brother. Her car is totaled, she's hurt, and the street gang is closing in when wolves with glowing eyes appear out of nowhere and chase away the killers.

Then a very cute guy who handles a bow like Robin Hood emerges from the woods and takes them to safety at his fortress-like home.

And that's just the first sign that Morgan and her brother have entered a hidden world filled with secrets...

 * Amazon * Goodreads *

The premise of this book is fantastic.  I love the whole concept and idea- it really has merit- but something in the actual execution of this book left me less than thrilled.

I have read so many YA paranormal books.  Some great, some not so great.  This one turned out to be not so great, but still, the concept had so much potential.

The characters were just not compelling, their personalities lacking.  Morgan left me yawning but the love and devotion she had for her brother may have been her one redeeming quality.

There were information dumps that had me skimming and I didn't get the attraction between the main characters.  This one just wasn't my favorite.

A Family Like Hannah's

A Family Like Hannah's
(Seasons of Alaska #4)

Paperback & ebook, 384 pages
February 1st 2016 by Harlequin Heartwarming

Starting over is serious business

With her professional skiing career cut short by an accident, Hannah James is putting all her energy into transforming Snowy Sky Resort into something special. There's only one obstacle. Famous pro-snowboarder-turned-consultant Tate Addison has his own ideas about taking the Rankins, Alaska, lodge to the next level. But Hannah won't compromise her dreams. She gets that Tate is trying to create a stable home for his orphaned six-year-old nephew—a boy Hannah already adores. And if she isn't careful, she could also fall for the boy's too-attractive uncle. Is she risking heartbreak? Or do she and Tate really want the same things out of life?

Amazon - Barnes & Noble - Harlequin - Kobo

I'm happy to be a part of the tour for A Family Like Hannah's.  I love the Harlequin Heartwarming line- it's perfect for girls like me who love their romances sweet and clean.

Tate and Hannah are both fantastic characters.  They both had depth and development which is something so necessary for me as a reader.  I felt like I was getting to know them through each page- not only knowing them but liking them too.

Tate is determined to give his nephew a good life and a legacy.  He has goals and ideas for how to go about doing this.  There has been so much tragedy and now it is time for love and safety.  I loved this about Tate.  His concern, his protection and his planning.  I loved the mishmash family he created with his coach, his nephew and himself.  It wasn't typical, but it was family.  It felt good.

Hannah is strong and determined as well.  She and Tate are very alike, but different too.  Hannah has an easy way about her that makes her a very likable character.  I was drawn in by her charms just as Tate was.

This book was easy to read and hard to put down.  I was drawn in and invested in this story.  So good!

Content:  Clean, some references to drug addition and child neglect and abuse.  A brief moment of mild violence.

Star Struck by Kathi Oram Peterson

Mercedes Grant is known to the world as Stormy Ryan, action hero. Her movie-star status has led to some unpleasant interactions in the past, and even a few stalkers, but none has ever come close enough to her to seem dangerous—until now. When she receives a death threat on her personal cell phone, she is understandably shaken. Seizing the opportunity to take some time away from the limelight while the police investigate the phone call, Mercedes escapes to her remote cabin near Idaho’s Snake River. She knows it is the perfect place to lie low, but she doesn’t realize how low she’ll actually feel once she arrives. After days of suffering from a cold she just can’t shake, Mercedes visits the town physician, Luke Parker. The handsome doctor, a fan of the stunning celebrity, performs the necessary tests and is devastated at the unexpected diagnosis he must give her. Mercedes is sick—really sick. He knows she can handle crazy fans, but the news he has to give is another story. As Mercedes struggles to come to terms with her new future, she relies on Luke’s support. But neither imagines the disease is not the only danger Mercedes is facing—because just out of view, someone is watching her and is determined to make good on their threat.

If you are in the mood for a light romantic suspense, this book will fit the bill perfectly.  Kathi Oram Peterson is known for her place in this genre in the LDS fiction world.

Mercedes is a famous movie star with a serious stalker.  She decides to take some time to get away and see if the police can catch the person.  Her remote cabin seems like the perfect place to hide out.  But, things don't go exactly as Mercedes hopes.  She gets sick and things start happening that she can't just explain away.

Luke is easy to like.  Down to earth, a bit heart sore but kind and generous.  Mercedes is different.  I didn't like how she always wanted to put everything off.  Every conversation, every confrontation.  It was hard to connect with her.  I didn't really get her connection to Luke.  The attraction between the characters- the spark- wasn't there.

I loved how every character was suspicious at some point.  Even though I nailed the real bad guy early on, it was fun to wonder and think everyone had a motive.  There was lots of drama swirling around everywhere.

This is an LDS fiction book and there are some religious elements.  Clean.

The Express Rider's Lady by Stacy Henrie + $50 and Book Giveaway!

The Express Rider's Lady

The Express Rider's Lady
by Stacy Henrie
Adult Christian Historical Romance
Paperback & ebook, 288 pages
February 9th 2016 by Love Inspired

Westward Wedding Journey

Delsie Radford is going to make it to California, no matter the danger or difficulty. Her father may have kept her and her sister apart, but Delsie refuses to miss her sister's wedding—even with only eighteen days to get there. And she's found the perfect escort in Pony Express rider Myles Patton.

Myles can't believe it when a pretty socialite hires him to take her cross-country through rough terrain and dangerous territory. Surely she'll quit before they reach their destination—he's known girls like her before. But the longer they ride together, the more Myles notices Delsie's toughness and kindness beneath her polished exterior. And though they may be worlds apart…they might just be perfect for each other.

I wasn't sure when I started this book if I was going to love it or not.  It took me a minute or two to settle in with the characters but I have to say that I ended up loving both Delsie and Myles.  Stacy Henrie did a fantastic job of giving her characters depth and humanity.  Their stories unfold gently and I felt like I was right there getting to know them.

Delsie is determined to make it to her sister's wedding.  I love her fierce determination to keep her family intact.  Delsie is ever so loyal to the people she loves and I love that.  She is also smart and kind.

Myles comes off gruff and silent but I loved his layers and how his story made him into a man of respect.  The journey across the country is one thing and the journey of Delsie and Myles is another thing.  Two journey's in one.

I really loved this book.  It was a great western historical fiction.  Clean!

Not Always Happenstance (Power of the Matchmaker) by Rachael Anderson + $50 Giveaway

  Not Always Happenstance

Lani has lived in Hana, Hawaii for five years. She’s learned to surf, fish, dive, and manage her grandmother’s bed and breakfast. She’s also learned to take one day at a time the way it should be taken—relaxed and unrushed, savoring every moment. But, like a large wave on the brink of breaking, her life is about to crash out of control. A proposal of marriage, a conniving grandmother, a cryptic Asian woman, and a handsome guest, and suddenly everything calm begins to churn, everything clear becomes confused, and all that was normal segues into peculiar. As Lani struggles against the current to hold her ground, she realizes that she can either continue to fight and eventually lose, or take a take a leap of faith, hold her breath, and ride the wave wherever it takes her. ***This book is part of the Power of the Matchmaker series that features one recurring character—the match maker—but it is a STAND-ALONE novel.***

There are so many things I'm feeling the love for right now.  This book, this series and this author.  I will gladly (and greedily) take anything written by Rachael Anderson and eat it right up.  She is one of my very favorites in the author world and I love reading her books.

This series is so awesome.  I knew it would be.  Each book is by a different author and can stand alone.  No book is dependent on the other although I would suggest reading the prequel novella because it introduces the matchmaker who makes an appearance in all the books.  She is the common thread in all the books in this series, but each book is it's own story and I love that.

In this book I took a trip to Hawaii.  Maui to be exact.  I've been to Hawaii twice, but I haven't been to Maui yet.  Someday, I hope.

Lani is a fantastic character.  I fell in love with her.  She is adaptable, witty and so sweet to her grandmother.  Her loyalty and kindness is refreshing.  It was Lani's moments of doubt and then courage that really connected me to her.

The Hawaiian culture was interwoven so seamlessly into this book.  I could feel, hear, smell and taste as I read.  This book created some lovely pictures in my head.

I loved this book.  It's one of my favorites.

He paused for a moment. His intense gaze had me feeling undone. “Are you happy, Kenadie?”
“That’s a complicated question.”
“Well, you are a complicated woman.”
 “I don’t try to be.”
 “It was a compliment.”
 “How do you do that?”
“What’s that?”
“You always know what to say to make me feel better about myself.”
“Well, that’s easy. You give me good material to work with.”

“You don’t know how happy I am to hear that,” he said smoothly.

Happy, happy me!  Jennifer Peel is one of my fave's and reading her books just makes me happy!  My thanks first to Jennifer, for allowing me to read and review for her.  It's always my great pleasure for the happy factor as stated above.  :)

I really felt that while reading this book I was getting to know real people.  There was a good flow to the story and things were always moving forward.  Kenadie is a bit thick headed and I often wanted to shake some sense into her, but she was endearing too and I was firmly in her corner, hoping for the light bulb to go on.  Kenadie has a good circle of love surrounding her.  Her best friend may need to be thunked over the head but he is the driving force in helping her loosen up and creep out of the protective shell she's been hiding in.  (I'm excited to read his story- I hope it's coming up soon!)

Jason is so incredibly patient and creative.  That man pursues Kenadie with finesse.  Honestly, any man willing to go to such lengths should be awarded a medal.  It was so easy to like Jason and rooting for him was a no brainer.

I loved the banter and the chemistry in this book.  It fit perfectly in my love for clean romance.  Honestly, this one was so much fun!  Happy, happy me!

Pimpernel by Sheralyn Pratt

For centuries, the elite of the world have sought the Pimpernel everywhere. Some want to kill him, others want to hire him, but Jack Cavanaugh knows that the love/hate relationship comes with the job title.

At present, Jack is trying to dismantle an investment scheme centered in Las Vegas, but "trying" is the operative word. It's been a month since he put the face of the scheme behind bars, yet the scam is still going strong. As Jack tries to uncover who has stepped in as the new head, what miniscule evidence there is all seems to point him back to Claire Ramsey, an introverted PhD student studying at UNLV.

If ever there as an unlikely head of an investment scheme, Claire's it. She has a genius IQ, but from all Jack has seen, Claire’s intelligence is as much a blessing as a curse when paired up with her acute OCD. Claire can barely make conversation with the cute guy down the hall, which makes it hard to believe she could be the charismatic salesperson who is getting international businessmen to invest $5—50 million a pop.

So what is Jack missing? What is the real story behind Claire Ramsey? And once Jack learns it, will he be able to walk away?

 * Amazon * Goodreads *

Oh my.  I am still thinking about this book days after reading.  My head is having a hard time letting it go and I really want to be able to read the next book right now.  Sheralyn Pratt says in the back of her book that if I want another book in this series, I should write a review.  So, here is it.  And now?  I'm waiting.... (said in my best high pitched sing- songy voice)

I really did love this book.  It took me a quick minute to adjust to Claire and her voice and settle in with the story but once I did?  I just couldn't pull myself out.  Claire is brilliant and like all of us, flawed.  But it is her flaws that make her brilliant and so very human.

Claire would obviously need a brilliant sort of man to match her.  Jack fits the bill for this perfectly.  He has more tricks up his sleeve, quite literally, than anyone else.  I loved Jack.  He was the glue that held all the characters and the plot together.

This book is full on from beginning to end.  There is danger and intrigue, secrets and surprises.  It was so engaging and fun!  I loved it.  Oh, wait.  I said that already.  It will be a loooooong wait for the next book.

Cover Reveal for Painting Rain by Annette K. Larsen + $25 Giveaway

Painting Rain

How do you heal your heart after tragedy leaves you broken? When the person you loved didn’t deserve it and they can’t earn your forgiveness because they’re already dead? How do you move on, and heal, and love?

If you’re Princess Lorraina, you paint. A year ago Lorraina watched Tobias die, and she still doesn't know how she's supposed to heal—or forgive. How can she when she’s still running away? In an attempt to reinvent herself, she steps outside her comfortable life as princess and seeks the tutelage of a master painter—a man who is not at all impressed by her pedigree, and demands not just talent, but emotional honesty. Struggling to learn what’s being taught, she finds herself drawn to someone who not only knows her secrets, but who she once considered far below her notice. Now she is compelled to seek him out despite knowing their relationship would be forbidden if discovered. Staying away from him doesn’t seem possible when discovering him may be the key to healing her heart and rediscovering herself.

Annette Larsen
Author Annette K. Larsen I was born in Utah, but grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona and St. Louis, Missouri, the fifth of seven children. I attended Southern Virginia University and Brigham Young University, where I studied English and Theater. I now live in Idaho with my husband and four children. I have Charlotte Brontë to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally, a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself. My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to face the reality of sacrificing what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but in the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it. I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.
