 * Amazon * Goodreads

What an excellent distraction this book was for me this week.  It was a quick, easy read that left me feeling happy and who couldn't use a bit of happy right now, eh?

Jett and Hannah both have big personalities that have been beaten down a bit for different reasons.  I liked the first head butting scenes where we got to see some of that fighting spirit emerge in both characters.  Hannah's confidence and resilience was refreshing and I loved how it eventually transferred to Jett.  Of course I loved the sparks and attraction and I loved it best when Hannah and Jett were working together.  The build up was great, the showdown felt satisfying and the happily ever after was the cherry on top.  This was a fun book!

This book is on Kindle Unlimited if you have that.

Content:  mild violence, peril.  Kissing.

Rakes and Roses (Mayfield Family #3) by Josi S. Kilpack

Lady Sabrina endured an abusive marriage, a miscarriage, and early widowhood to emerge as a smart, successful, confident woman who found a way to make her mark in a man's world. She has friends and purpose, but cannot hide from the emptiness she feels when the parties are over and the friends have gone home to families she will never have.

Harry Stillman may be charming and handsome, but he's a gambler and a rake who has made a mockery of his privileges. He turns to the mysterious Lord Damion for financial relief from his debts, but still ends up beaten nearly senseless by thugs and left in an alley.

When Lady Sabrina comes upon Harry after the attack, she remembers the kindness Harry once showed to her six years ago and brings him to her estate to heal. Though their relationship begins on rocky footing, it soon mellows into friendship, then trust. But Lady Sabrina needs to keep Harry at a distance, even if he is becoming the kind of man worthy of her heart. After all, she is keeping a secret that, if exposed, could destroy everything she's so carefully built.

Do you want to know what I loved best about this book?  It felt different than other regency books.  The premise was unique and Lady Sabrina's life felt different but still believable within the genre.  I loved her independence and her desire to make a difference in the lives of others.  Her confidence and smarts had me singing a girl's anthem in my head.  But then, her vulnerabilities would shine through and remind me how very human she was.  I really loved Lady Sabrina.

I thought the author did a good job with Harry.  How do you take a legitimate rake and scoundrel and reform him in a way that's believable on both ends of a spectrum?  And in a way that I would end up liking him?  That's tricky, right?  Like I said, good job to the author there.  I think the relationship between Lady Sabrina and Harry progressed naturally and felt legitimate for the most part.

This story is steady but it is a bit slow.  There are no great fireworks, although the end has a little one, and the build up is gentle but I did enjoy it.  This book is part of a series but stands alone easily.

Content:  mild violence, kissing

 * Goodreads * Amazon *

I've been reading Becky Wade books for a long time now.  She's definitely a favorite of mine in the Christian fiction genre.  She creates wonderful characters with substance and personality.  It's what I love most, I think.

This book has many different sides to it.  Both Sam and Gen have demons they are fighting.  They are flawed but inherently good.  You can feel their goodness and their desires clearly.  I love how the backstories for both Gen and Sam built as the book progressed.  We get Sam's a bit faster which was helpful in understanding his struggles with Gen in particular.  To add even another layer, Gen and her sister are involved in an investigation of sorts, which brought some mystery and intrigue to the story.  It was interesting and engaging the whole way through and I really found myself loving the characters in this story.  Becky Wade made that easy to do.

Content:  heavier on the Christian elements, drug abuse, kissing.  Light mention of abuse, murder.

Between Now and Forever by Lucinda Whitney

When Sarah Linden-Price arrives at a rental cabin in Maine, she has only one goal—to complete the promised photography project for her best friend and head back to Manhattan. Making friends isn’t part of the plan. But when a walk on the beach results in a mishap with a man and his dog, she’s surprised to discover they’re old acquaintances.

For Dean Jensen, the small town of St. Martin’s Cove is the perfect escape—and the perfect opportunity to keep his pen name a secret. He has no intention of moving back to New York City, and even less of falling in love. But then he reconnects with Sarah, and everything starts to change.

As Dean helps Sarah with her photography project, his feelings deepen beyond the youthful crush from their college days. But as her time in Maine winds down, they’re both left wondering what sacrifices their blossoming relationship is worth.

This is a very sweet novella by author Lucinda Whitney.  It was a quick evening read for me and I really enjoyed the setting and the characters.  Sarah and Dean reconnect after years and it was fun watching them find their way into a gentle romance after finding the base of friendship again.

The ocean, the storms (perfect for snuggling), the sunrises and the food all made for some pretty pictures in my head.  There were lots of warm fuzzies to be had in this story!  I need to visit Maine!  But not in October.  Maybe in the summer?

This Kindle book is just $.99 right now.  Happy reading!

Ace: A Fighter Pilot Romance (Top Flight Book 1) by Sophia Summers

A fighter pilot with regrets, a humanitarian worker with a mission, and a second chance to work through everything that keeps them apart.

Dex Callison, otherwise known as Ace makes a split second decision to parachute into a hostile situation to make a lot of things in his life right. His life as a Senator's son, a JAG Air Force pilot and then an active duty soldier have not yet filled the loss of his best friend, the only woman he has ever loved, Gianna West.

Gianna West thought that she and Dex were made for each other forever. He'd promised to finish his active duty and then join her building orphanages all over the world in remote villages. But she learned in one instant, how much more Dex wanted to start his own military training program, much more than he wanted to be with her. Alone, serving people she falls in love with, she tries to tell herself she doesn't miss him. All of that goes out the window when he shows up in her village on a remote island.

When you travel to a different country every six months, there’s little time for relationships. Every pilot joins Top Flight for different reasons, but no one expects to fall in love.

The Team:
Dex, Call sign ACE
Ridley, Call sign BEAR
Colton, Call sign FLYBOY
Amanda, Call sign MUSTANG

 * Amazon * Goodreads

I'm pretty excited about this new Fighter Pilot Romance series and Sophia Summers did a great job kicking things off.  Each book will be by a different author which should be so much fun!

I think this author had a difficult task of giving us the foundation for all the characters to come in this series and she did it really well.  I didn't feel too overwhelmed by all the characters (and there were a LOT of them!) and I felt like I had a good base for future character development by the next authors.

Dex and Gianna have history.  They have known each other for a long time and loved each other almost as long.  I really love a good second chance at first love story and this one definitely hit that sweet spot.  Dex and Gianna are both strong and brave.  They are what I would call the "doers" of the world.  They are out in the trenches, making things happen.  Their jobs aren't easy but they both find immense satisfaction in what they do.

I loved the strong connection between Dex and Gianna.  They have chemistry and respect for each other.  That's a great combination.  I loved the elements of danger and action surrounding Dex and Gianna because it kept things exciting and moving forward at a fast pace.  This book had a definite Top Gun feel to it and it makes me excited to see where the next books in this series take me.

The Earl's Winning Wager (Lords for the Sisters of Sussex #2) by Jen Geigle Johnson

Lord Morley's life will change forever when he wins a game of cards and a family of sisters to go along with it.

Miss Standish in none too pleased to have become the responsibility of yet another Lord, even if he is full of charm and goodness. Her responsibilities are to her sisters first.

With the repairs on the castle moving forward nicely and concerted efforts in a season in Bath made to find suitors for them all, Miss Standish and Lord Morley must determine where duty stops and matters of the heart take over.

 * Amazon * Goodreads *

What a sweet story!  Lord Morley and Miss Standish were perfectly suited for each other and were both kind, good people.  They were easy to like and easy to root for.  I think one of the the things I loved best about Morley was the way he viewed June's sisters as his own.  His care and concern for them was so endearing.  I loved him for that alone.  Well, and for his good manners.  He felt like all that was gentlemanly and good.

I love this family of Standish sisters living in a castle!  They all have personality and it will be fun to follow each of their stories in this series.

Clean regency romance.  Kissing.

If any of you follow me and my reviews anywhere, you know that I love author Jennifer Peel.  It's a fact.  I love the way she writes and I think she is a genuinely fabulous human too.  I recently had an interview/conversation with her and I'm excited to share it with you.

But before we get to the interview and the giveaway, let's take a look at Jennifer's new book!

An ancient curse. A forbidden love. Which will die first?

Sorrel Black’s family has been ruled by a book passed down from generation to generation. But now that it is in her possession, it has stopped working. For her alone, one critical piece of information is missing that will keep the curse, cast long ago as a punishment for her family’s rebellion, from being passed down to her daughter. She hopes the book’s silence means the curse will end with her—even if it means dying alone. But then Eric Knight walks into her life and changes everything.

When investigative journalist Eric Knight is forced to take an assignment to interview bakery owner Sorrel Black, he has no idea that her story will become their story. That his secrets are her secrets. Now together, these born enemies turned lovers must not only face the curse that has separated their families for generations, but the reality that breaking the curse means breaking their hearts. For, in the end, only one family can survive.

First off, I want to thank you for taking the time to chat with me. It seriously makes me so happy. This feels like the perfect time to talk with you because you just released a new book- The Book of Sorrel- in a new to you genre and that's big! Like B-I-G, big. Is that how it feels for you too?

Yes, it does. I’ve been wanting to write this book forever. I had even teased about it in His Personal Relationship Manager, but until recently, I hadn’t had the courage to try. It took me moving to Utah and being able to take a class from Brandon Sanderson to make it a reality.

I'm SO glad you found the courage!!
There are so many heightened emotions swirling around right now due to this pandemic, I can only imagine that this book release has been a tougher one for you. You've had a lot going on lately- how are you doing?

It’s so true. It honestly made me hesitant to release a book right now. To do something so normal, when life isn’t normal for anyone currently. But I had a lot of fans really looking forward to it, so I pushed forward. My family and I are doing well. My husband and I have worked at home for years, so that didn’t change for us. And I’ve always been one to put myself on a schedule, so I’m still getting up early and following a routine which as been super helpful. I feel like anything I can do that’s “normal” has helped me stay sane.

I'm one of those fans who has been pestering you to write this book so thank you. I'm glad your family is safe and well. I should follow your lead and keep a routine. It might help my sanity.

I'm so grateful for your encouragement and support!
I know you've been sitting on this book idea for quite awhile now. What was the final push you needed to take the leap?

As I mentioned before, I had the opportunity to take a class from Brandon Sanderson, where he ended up being part of my writing group every three weeks. It was super intimidating. I also was able to attend his lecture every week where he discussed how to write sci-fi and fantasy. As part of the class we had to write at least 35k words of a book, so I took the opportunity to delve into the world of Sorrel and Eric.
You often talk about your characters talking to you at night or in Target while you are shopping. Did this happen with Eric and Sorrel too? Were their voices loud?

Oh, yes. I’ve been hearing them for years. We had many conversations together while I strolled through Target.
Do you remember the first spark of the idea for this book? How did it come about?

As funny as it sounds, the idea came to me while I was sitting in a church service. The idea of the book of life struck me. From that was born the books that rule Sorrel’s and Eric’s lives.

Haha, I love this! Church and Target.

I've read The Book of Sorrel and as you know, I really loved it. It feels like a Jennifer Peel book with some new, different flavors. Was it fun to delve into and experiment with some new elements

It really was. It made me feel free in a sense. When you add fantasy elements, it opens up a whole new world to explore. Writing this book was kind of like falling in love for the first time. I would get butterflies when I wrote. It was also the first time I had done dual POV’s which was a lot of fun. I will probably do that again someday.

Yes! Thank you for bringing that up because I really loved the dual perspectives in this book. It was fun!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I was really nervous about doing it and using third person which I had never done either.

Are you the kind of author that has music in your head as you write scenes? Any songs for this book?

I am. I usually listen to the songs that I feel fit the mood of the book while I’m getting ready for the day and before I write. Here’s a list of some of the songs that I felt embodied the story:

Love Walks In by Van Halen

Something Just Like This by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay

Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic by The Police

When We Dance by Sting

Also, my son has made an original song inspired by The Book of Sorrel, that I’ll be sharing soon. It’s soooo good!

Ooh! I've heard your son and he is very talented. What a treat that he can create something right along with you. I can't wait to hear it!

What was your favorite scene in the book to write? Without giving too much away.

I loved writing the scenes where they banter back and forth and their first date.

There were so many yummy scenes for me.  "Dreamy" scenes.  I love the banter too.  There were so many good moments.  Thank you, Jennifer Peel for chatting with me and most especially for writing books I love.  Thank you for being brave and for giving me The Book of Sorrel.  I really hope there is more to come from you in this genre!

I feel like I have been waiting FOREVER for this book!  And now!  Here it is!  I cannot tell you how excited I am that Jennifer Peel wrote a new book in this new genre.  This paranormal romance genre is one that I crave often but have a hard time finding within my more conservative "clean" preferences.  I just knew that Jennifer Peel could rock this genre for me but now she's left me with this craving for more and I'm just not finding it.  I guess she'll just have to write another book for me.

This story has all the things I long for in a good story: chemistry, growing intensity, bits of magic, expanding characters and best of all, it felt unlike anything I've been reading.  It was engaging from beginning to end and wow, that ending was explosive.  🔥  The emotional connections were there and I absolutely adored Sorrel.  Oh fine.  I loved Eric too. 😍

If you are a fan of Jennifer Peel and feel hesitant about the genre change here, I would say to give it a chance.  You will find all the same things you love about this authors writing with just a bit of magic and danger thrown in.  If you haven't read Jennifer Peel's book but love paranormal romance, happy day for you!

This book is also on Kindle Unlimited if you have that.

Content:  mild swearing, mild peril, danger, mild violence, kissing
