Beyond the Rising Tide by Sarah Beard + Giveaway!

Kai was seventeen when he died saving Avery’s life, though he didn’t really have much to live for. After spending half his life being shipped around to different families, the only place he felt at home was on a street corner with his guitar. Now, it’s been six months since his death. Six months adapting to a new kind of existence where instead of making music, he uses his new healing powers to save lives. But in his off hours, he watches helplessly as Avery’s life is unraveled by his death.

Avery doesn’t know that it was Kai who saved her life in the ocean, because her rescuer’s body was never found. Wracked with guilt, the ocean she once loved is now her tormentor. As her surfboards collect dust in the garage, the weight of her grief destroys her relationships and stretches her to a breaking point.

Always willing to break rules for those he loves, Kai steals a ring that temporarily gives his body substance. With limited time, he does all he can to restore her life to the way it was before his tragic death, but Kai’s half-baked plans rarely turn out the way he thinks they will.

I am in love with this book.  Could I tell you anything better than that?  I doubt it, but here's my attempt to explain why I love it.

This is not what I would classify as your typical YA romance.  The story felt meaty- full of depth and emotion that I could just sink my soul into.  There was nothing light or surface to this book.  I really loved that.  As the book went on and more of the story unfolded, I felt like I was really getting to know the characters.  They became real to me.  I was invested completely and I had a hard time putting the book down.

I wasn't sure how this story would resolve.  I thought I knew, then I didn't.  Then I did, then I didn't.  :)  It was awesome.  There were moments of brilliant writing and imagery.  They made my reader heart happy.

Here is one of my favorite quotes from the book:
"Avery haunts me.  I smell her scent even when she's not beside me.  I hear her voice echoing inside my head long after she's gone.  And when I'm not looking, she moves things around inside the chambers of my still heart."

This is a book I'm sure my teenage daughters will love.  I can easily pass this book off to them with no hesitation.  This book is clean (no swearing, profanity or sexual situations).

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Happy Release Day to Chemistry Lessons by Rebecca H. Jamison!

Everyone in Lone Spur knows Rosie will accept even the most unlovable animal into her life. Men, though, are a different story.

Take Destry, the guy who bought the ranch next door. Sure, he’s handsome and wealthy, but he wears flip-flops to work his fields. Not that Rosie should worry about him getting hurt.
Her biggest concern is that she needs to buy her grandfather’s ranch before her uncle sells it out from under her. The problem is that on her teacher’s salary, she doesn’t qualify for a loan. Her long-time boyfriend, Tanner, proposes a solution—they can get married and qualify for a loan together, only Rosie isn’t sure if her heart is with her faithful fiancé, her ranch, or her swoon-worthy neighbor.

Today is release day for Rebecca Jamison's new book, Chemistry Lessons!  I love when I can review books on their actual release day.  It makes me feel like I'm part of a party.  :)

For me, this book started off a bit slow, a bit off.  I can't pinpoint exactly why that was but I as kept reading, I settled in and got to know the characters more and it felt better.

Destry is all likable, all the time.  The guy is patient, helpful, thoughtful and wealthy.  He is out to help people change their lives.  He was easily the best part of the book.  Always there, always helpful.

Rosie is so hardworking and determined but she is also very helpful and kind.  Both Destry and Rosie have bits in their past that have been hard- death, substance abuse, physical abuse, estrangement from loved ones- there are all sorts of big issues and problems for both of them.  I felt like these issues stayed on the surface and I never felt the gritty emotions of them with the characters.  I had a lot of questions that never got answered.  I felt like there were some inconsistencies as well.

I enjoyed how the story played out though.  I got much satisfaction in the ending- it always happy when things come together.  The setting was fun and I could easily picture what was happening.  Small towns- gotta love them!  This book is squeaky clean and that is always much appreciated when I read books.

Summer House Party (Timeless Regency Collection) by Regina Scott, Donna Hatch, Sarah M. Eden

A ENGAGEMENT OF CONVENIENCE by Regina Scott: Kitty Chapworth is nearly a spinster, and an orphan living on the charity of her uncle, with nothing to recommend her for the marriage mart. Her primary purpose is relegated to acting chaperone for her cousins until she can see them successfully married. Kitty remains focused on her duty even though she knows her future is bleak. When Quentin Adair returns from a long ten years working in Jamaica and proposes a wild charade to Kitty, she agrees, although the plan might reawaken her old feelings for Quentin. Can a reformed rake convince the perfect chaperone to overlook propriety for love?

A PERFECT MATCH by Donna Hatch: Genevieve attends a summer house party hosted by her best friend who can't wait to introduce her to a gentleman she wants to marry, Christian Amesbury. After meeting him, Genevieve determines Christian is perfect . . . for her. Torn between loyalty to her best friend and the yearnings of her heart, Genevieve must first escape the attention of a powerful lord who's obsessed with her and who tries to rob her of any hope for a happily ever after.

THE PAUPERS’ HOUSE PARTY by Sarah M. Eden: It’s a rare event that Edward Downy and his brother are invited to a house party by a member of the ton. But when they arrive, Edward quickly realizes this house party is different than any other. All invited guests are quite destitute, fallen members of Society barely hanging onto their homes. The hosts of the house party, the Warricks, then make a stunning announcement—they intend to gift all their properties to one fortunate guest. As the guests race to impress the Warricks, Edward finds a fast friend in Agatha Holmwood, who shares his same aversion to the horrible expectations. But their growing fondness for each other only makes the game more painful.

I am always on the lookout for new collections in this series.  I love regency romances- especially when my favorite authors are writing them!  The stories in this book all revolve somehow around a summer house party which is such a fun setting.  Each author has their own take and their own voice so each story is distinctly different and so good.

I love a good second chance at first love kind of story.  Regina Scott does a fabulous job of creating back story, character development and growth in a short amount of time.  This was an excellent story and I really enjoyed it!

Donna Hatch is one of my fave's and her story links in with a series she writes about the Amesbury brothers.  I love that series.  Yummy it is!  This one also has a bit of intrigue which adds to the flavor.

Sarah Eden is the best.  I will always, at any time, be in for reading anything by Sarah Eden.  I loved this novella because it was kind of a twist on a house party.  Instead of the rich and stuffy, we get a house party full of those in poverty.  It was a fun switcheroo and it made me smile.

If you love regency romance, you've got to give this one a try!  It was perfectly diverting.

Forget Me Not (Hostage Negotiation #3.5) by Julie Coulter Bellon

After reconnecting with Lucy Aguayo on an undercover mission to Colombia, Bart Gutierrez can't imagine his life without her now. Exploring their new relationship has him thinking of love and marriage, but before they can move forward, their dangerous past comes back to haunt them. Can they face it together or will it tear them apart?

Lucy has been undercover for five years and her new "normal" life takes some getting used to. Bart and his family have welcomed her with open arms and just as she starts to believe her newfound happiness isn't going to be snatched away, government agents show up unannounced and give her an ultimatum---do one last operation for us or you won't like the consequences.

Everything doesn't go as planned, however, and soon both of their lives are on the line. Can they survive the mission and put the past behind them once and for all, in order to have the future they've always wanted?

(A companion novella that takes place directly following Pocket Full of Posies Hostage Negotiation Team #3)

 * Amazon * Goodreads *

I just love having these in between, follow up novellas for this Hostage Negotiation Team series.  It's like a P.S. for the characters.  So fun.

This  P.S. is for Bart and Lucy.  They are home from Colombia and working on their relationship.  You may think that this means that things are quiet and back to normal, but no.  No it isn't.  Bart and Lucy are sucked right back into the drug cartel once again with the hopes that this time will finally be the last and they can move on with their lives.

There was a bit of romance and a bit of suspense.  I was pulled right back into the lives of Bart and Lucy- willingly and happily.

I love how Julie Bellon writes.  She is one of my very favorite authors in this genre.  Reading her books is the best treat!

Have I ever said that I love Harlequin Heartwarming books?  Ha!  I really do.  I love that I know exactly what I'm going to get- a sweet, clean romance.

I do believe this is an author that is new to me.  I haven't read any of the other books in this series and now I really think I need to.  I'm putting them on my TBR list for sure.

I loved Kady.  There was something so human about her and her need to find acceptance and support from the people she loves.  Kady made some bad decisions earlier in life, but now she is trying to prove that she is reliable and trustworthy.  I love her smarts and her determination.  The whole florist/flowers vibe was fun!  I wish I could go to a convention like this just to see what people created with flowers.  I bet it would smell heavenly!

This book was a clean romance with a touch of suspense and danger.  It kept me interested from beginning to end.

Content:  Clean.  Some mild violence, drug use.

An Informal Introduction by Heather Gray + Book Giveaway!

Series: Informal Romance
Genre: Christian, Contemporary, Romance
Publisher: Ladybug Lit
Publication date: May 2, 2016
Number of pages: 229

She saves lives. He protects them. And someone's trying to stop them both.

Lily Ziminski is an ICU nurse near the nation's capital where politics are a regular part of hospital policy. Assigned a series of high-profile patients, she finds herself an unwilling focus of the media. Lily would much rather do without all the attention...except where one cowboy-hat-wearing state trooper is concerned.

Caleb Graham runs into the same captivating nurse twice in one day, and he's not a man who believes in coincidence. When problems at a local impound lot force him into the middle of a bizarre case that threatens Lily, Caleb will stop at nothing to protect her.

From a stranger in a parking garage to Secret Service agents, surprise chases Lily around every corner. In the midst of the chaos, she has two constants - her longtime faith in God, and her growing attraction for a silver-eyed trooper.

  * Amazon * Goodreads *

This was a fun, contemporary romance with just a touch of intrigue.  I loved the opening scene of the book where Lily meets Caleb.  It drew me in right away and I loved how it made their second meeting sparky.  :)

Lily and Caleb are both great characters.  It was easy to get a sense of who they were and what made them tick.  I was especially drawn in by Caleb.  He is determined and strong.  He goes after what he wants.  The cast of secondary characters were good as well and while there were many of them, I never felt overwhelmed or confused.

I enjoyed this book.  It was a fun escape and I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.  This isn't the first book in this series, it's the third.  I guess I have some back reading to do!

As if the flashing lights in her rearview mirror weren’t enough, the trooper turned on the siren, too. Lily cringed and slid down in her seat like a teenager hiding from prying eyes. Of course, her teen years were long behind her, and any eyes intent on prying would need night vision goggles to see her. The sun hadn’t yet kissed the eastern horizon.
She slowed and sought a place to pull over, no small feat on this narrow stretch of Lee Highway. Spotting a patch of grass to her right, she steered her silver two-door sedan as far over as she could and cut the engine. Her fingers drummed a rhythmless beat on the steering wheel as she waited for the trooper. He was probably busy checking with dispatch to make sure she wasn’t a mass murderer. Because, clearly, rampaging homicidal maniacs drove nondescript cars on the way to the hospital in the wee hours of the morning.
In all her years traversing this road, Lily had never seen a state trooper on this particular stretch. Until today. Good thing she’d left early for work.
Thank you, God, for getting me up and out the door when You did.
The trooper climbed out of his cruiser and approached her parked vehicle. She hit the button and listened to the almost imperceptible hum as her window slid down. The grey of his uniform would have blended into the night were it not for the illumination of his headlights and his car-mounted spotlight. As it happened, they blinded her enough that she couldn’t catch much more than the color of his clothes and a hint of his shape.
“License and registration, please.” The voice was impatient. Tired, too. He was probably at the end of his shift, which meant she had little chance of winning the argument, but she wouldn’t let that stop her from trying.
“I wasn’t speeding.”
“License and registration, please.”
So much for the serve part of public service.
“Can you at least tell me why you pulled me over?”
“Give me your license and registration, ma’am.”
Heat swept through Lily. It’s not like she’d asked a difficult question. “How do I even know you’re a state trooper and not some crazed rapist who’s trying to get my address so he can break into my home?”
The trooper’s shadowed mouth hinted at a smile, and his eyes morphed from intense pinpoints to… Hm. Eyes couldn’t be huggable, could they?
Who was she kidding? She couldn’t even see his eyes. Her imagination had to be on overdrive.
“Well, ma’am, most people consider those flashing red and blue lights as proof enough that I’m one of the good guys, but if it would make you feel better, I’d be happy to go turn the siren back on, too. I doubt crazed rapists announce themselves with police sirens.” Now that he was speaking in actual sentences, Lily picked up a hint of honeyed Southern drawl dancing along the edge of his words. She never could resist Southern charm — real or imagined.

The Books in the Series

Heather Gray loves coffee, God, and her family – not necessarily in that order! She enjoys people who embrace God even when life is hard and who aren't afraid to laugh out loud. Like her, the characters she writes are flawed…but loved anyway.
