David's Song Blog Tour and $25 Giveaway

David's Song Taken from the book cover: Annie only ever really loved two men in her life. One broke her heart, the other married her. Four children and fifteen years later, Annie’s marriage is in jeopardy. Money is tight and her husband questions the very foundation of their relationship. When Annie is unexpectedly given the opportunity to see the young man who broke her heart — a man who is now a megastar in the music industry — Annie is faced with choices. Choices that will determine what is of more value — a second chance at lost love and unfulfilled dreams or commitment, trust, and love built on years of experience. A psychologically subtle, yet compelling tale about how the instinct and need for love overcomes self-doubt and personal inadequacy.

I'm not really sure exactly what to say about this book or how to say it.  I'm sort of at a loss.  I talked to my husband about this book after I read it because I was feeling so out of sorts.

This book definitely evokes emotions.  I felt for Annie but mostly I felt guilty for Annie.  She didn't seem to feel much of that for herself, but I sure did.  I felt guilty and disloyal and dirty even.  On her behalf.

I think all marriages have rough patches.  It's working through those that makes you stronger.  I know that isn't always the case, but in this case it was.  Annie's husband may not have been the best communicator, but he was trying.  Jeremy was faithful to Annie and tried to give Annie what he thought she wanted.  He always felt second best, second choice and Annie pretty much proved that he was by her actions.

I thought Annie was selfish.  I didn't like her.  It was like she just threw her whole marriage and children out the window without much thought at all when dream boat from the past walks in.  Even if she didn't feel loved by her husband, what about her children?  Was she really just going to up and leave for some far off destination for a romp with the old flame?  Where does that leave her children?  What does that tell them?  Oh oy.

I guess I'm just of a different mind and heart than Annie.  I can't imagine renewing a relationship with someone when my marriage was still in place.  Happy or not.  I can see the temptation that Annie had.  Of course I can.  But that's when you run the other way until things with your marriage are resolved one way or another.  Annie had those people reminding her of that but she selfishly chose differently.

I guess this book just wasn't for me.  Just the whole topic and viewpoint.  Maybe I've just seen the repercussions of these type of decisions so many times that it hits too close to my heart.

The book was well written.  It obviously evoked real emotions from me which should be considered a positive.

Truth or Date by Susan Hatler

Better Date than Never Series, Book 2

Gina Hall is done with men who won’t commit. Ten years waiting for her ex to propose wasted her time. Never again. When her friend Kristen starts a game of Truth or Dare, she dares Gina to go on a date with Ethan, who’s amazing and total marriage material.

As Gina plans the going away party for office playboy Chris Bradley, she spontaneously initiates a game of Truth or Dare with him. When his turn comes around, he dares Gina to pose as his girlfriend to help get a flirty colleague off his back. Gina finds playing couple with Chris way too much fun.

Even though Gina and Chris are pretending, their relationship begins to feel painfully real. Fearing she might be falling for another fly-by man, Gina must focus on Ethan so she doesn’t make the same dating mistakes all over again.

Hey everyone!  Did you all have a grand weekend?  I kicked my weekend off with this book, Truth or Date by Susan Hatler.  Friday night, it's late and very quiet at my house.  I'm curled up in bed reading a witty, fun, romantic book.  Perfect, right?

I really needed a good light-hearted distraction.  I was in the mood for a romance because I've been reading lots of dystopian and paranormal lately.  (which I also enjoy, don't get me wrong) A clean romance is where my heart sighs though.  I just can't help it.

Truth or Date is the second book in a series but these books are stand alone books for sure.  You don't have to read one before another to be in the loop.  These are also short stories, so be aware that they will probably end way before you are ready!

Susan is so good at writing romance.  I just loved Gina and Chris.  Their interactions are believable and real.  Dialogue flows and it's so easy to settle in to the vibe.  The attraction is palpable, humming as tensions build.  Yummy stuff, that.  (ooh, I'm just thinking I should have been eating Oreo cookies while reading this.  That would have even more awesome.)

So, yeah, if you have a couple hours to devote to reading and you have a hankering for a good romance that will make you smile, you need to check this book out.  Indulge, enjoy!

My thanks to Susan for being the most awesome author friend and sending me her book to read and review.  It's always a happy day to get a note in my mailbox from Susan.

You can find Truth or Date at Amazon for just $1.99!  Sweet hook up there.  :)

On Fabulous Tour! daynight by Megan Thomason + Giveaways!

On Tour with Prism Book Tours...

It's time to leave Earth and cross over to the other side... it's not as far away as you think!!

Daynightdaynight
by Megan Thomason
Paperback, 324 pages
Published November 26th 2012 by Creatspace

Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Earth’s benevolent non-profit by day, Thera’s totalitarian regime by night. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance™. Reality: the SCI subjects Second Chancers to strict controls and politically motivated science experiments like Cleaving—forced lifetime union between two people who have sex. Punishment for disobeying SCI edicts? Immediate Exile or death.

Meet Kira Donovan. Fiercely loyal, overly optimistic, and ensnared by the promise of a full-ride college scholarship, Kira signs the SCI Recruit contract to escape memories of a tragedy that left her boyfriend and friends dead.

Meet Blake Sundry. Bitter about being raised in Exile and his mother’s death, Blake’s been trained to infiltrate and destroy the SCI. Current barrier to success? His Recruit partner—Miss Goody Two Shoes Kira Donovan.

Meet Ethan Darcton. Born with a defective heart and resulting inferiority complex, Ethan’s forced to do his SCI elite family’s bidding. Cleave-worthy Kira Donovan catches his eye, but the presiding powers give defect-free Blake Sundry first dibs.

Daynight is one of those books with such an interesting premise. An alternate world that mirrors Earth? There are so many cool ideas in this book. I thought everything was so creative. It was honestly a parade of crazy good ideas.

There are some pretty interesting characters going on in this book. The beginning of the story sets up so much in this book. It really gave me the hook I needed to become involved in this story.

While I loved the premise of the book and individually I like all the characters, I did have a hard time with how the story was laid out. Sometimes it was hard to follow and I got distracted. I'm really not a fan of love triangles for the most part. I just don't love them. This was no exception. As I said, individually I like all the characters, it's just the triangle thing.

While this is a YA book, I would recommend an older YA audience. There is lots of talk about sex in this book. The book calls it "cleaving" and there is a LOT of cleaving talk. It started to annoy me a bit. In addition, there is drinking, drugs, mild swearing and violence.

Introducing...  the new Novella:  FREE for the Tour!

clean slate complex
by Megan Thomason

Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Worldwide non-profit and do-gooder organization. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance at Life(TM). Reality: hidden behind every kind act is a dark agenda designed to gain control and force societal and moral extremes. Currently, the SCI’s pushing Project Liberate, a program to woo the poor and downtrodden into their Clean Slate Complexes—where “everything is provided” from jobs to food, shelter, clothing, and education. Unfortunately, as with all things that sound too good to be true, there’s a catch…

Meet Alexa Knight. Feisty, tough and currently homeless in Los Angeles, Alexa agrees to help the SCI in return for medical care for her sick mother. When she starts to suspect there’s more to the SCI than meets the eye will she believe Adam—the boy who saved her life and the SCI’s biggest champion, or Joshua—the attractive enigma who sings about conspiracy theories and pretends to be someone he’s not?

Full of action, humor, romance, twists and turns, clean slate complex is a companion story to the highly-praised dystopian novel, daynight. It can be enjoyed before or after reading daynight.

I actually enjoyed the novella more than the book, I think. It really helped me link the whole story of the SCI in my head. In the book we get to enter the alternate world and in this novella we get to see how things are connected to the Earth and what is happening here. It was cool to be introduced to new characters. I really liked them.

We get a glimpse of the characters from daynight in this novella and it definitely perked my interest in the next book to see how everything fits back together and intertwines.

As with the other book, there is mild swearing and violence but not any cleaving talk which I really appreciated.

Unbelievable by Sherry Gammon: Blog Tour and Giveaway!

Deliah Lopez Dreser’s in town to take care of family business. They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, but there’s more to Lilah than meets the eye. Cole’s in danger of losing his heart when this firestorm throws sparks his way. However, is she simply playing him for the fool in order to exact revenge for her brother’s murders?

Maggie and Seth’s reaction when the truth is revealed pushes friendship to the limit. And this time around it won’t be a Dreser causing an uproar in Port Fare. It will be Cole's good friend Booker. But does Booker have it all wrong?  Usually not!

Book Trailer

I was so happy to be included in this blog tour for Sherry Gammon's new book, Unbelievable.  This is the second book in the Port Fare series with Unlovable being the first.  Although I have had these books on my "to read" list, I hadn't had the chance to read them yet.  Gratefully, Sherry sent me both books so I could read them in order.  You could read Unbelievable without reading the first book, but I was really glad I did read the first book before this one.  I felt like I got to know the characters from square one.  Unlovable was a great read and I loved it.

I really believe that if you have great characters that people can connect and relate to you could put them in almost any setting and have a great book.  Some books are plot driven and some are character driven.  I would definitely put this book into the character driven bag.  The characters have real feelings and emotions that I could identify with.  Their dialogue was believable and easy flowing.  That isn't to say that the plot was lacking, because it totally was not.  I loved the continuation of the story line from the first book and the slow building tension because you just know that everything is going to come to a head and blow at any moment.

After reading the first book I had hoped that we would get to know Cole better.  Yea for the starring role in this book!  He is such a sweet man, gentle and loyal.  I just love him.  His personality is in stark contrast to Deliah's forward and out loud personality.  It was fun watching them come together.

These were some of my favorite reads this month.  I'm a fan of Sherry Gammon and I will be watching and waiting for next books.

On Tour with Demons by Heather Frost

Kate's life is far from normal. She can see Auras, her boyfriend is immortal, and her powers make her a target. But now that the Demon Lord is hunting her, things are about to go from dangerous to truly deadly. Packed with action, mind-blowing plot twists, and characters you can't get enough of, this is a fast-paced, heart-pounding read from cover to cover.

Guess what?  The third book in the Seers series is coming out soon!  To celebrate and get ready for that, Heather Frost is sending Demons out on tour again.  I have previously reviewed this book and I LOVED it.  You can read my review HERE.  This series is one of my favorites.

My daughter and I met Heather recently and had her sign our books.  She is so sweet.  My daughter is such a fan of these books too.  We were both super excited with our own little meet and greet.  You can see my post of that HERE.

Instead of re-posting my review of Demons (book 2 in the Seers series) I decided to involve my daughter for a new point of view.  Jaalah wrote up some interview questions for Heather and today I'll be posting that interview.  I hope you enjoy it!

Hi Heather. I just love your books. :) I'm wondering how you got the idea for writing these books?

Hi Jaalah! Thanks for reading, and for the great question. My story ideas usually come by first creating interesting characters. Usually I’ll start with only a small idea—a situation that I can put my new character in—and the story grows from there, The idea for “Seers” evolved a little differently. It began with a desire to write a unique story about immortality and the afterlife. The idea for Guardians and Demons came soon after that, and originally Patrick was going to be the main character. But a little more brainstorming convinced me I needed Seers, and so Kate was born. The rest seemed to literally fall into my head, and I started writing. The rest is history.

Were there any scenes inspired by memories, dreams or experiences?

The scenes with the special needs kids were influenced largely by personal experience. In high school I had the opportunity to help out in the classroom with special needs kids, and the positive influence those great kids had on me has remained with me.

How long do you usually take to write a book?

It usually takes me about six months. Seers was an exception—I completed the manuscript in two weeks.

In Demons, there is a certain person we have to say goodbye to. It made me cry. Do you ever cry when you are writing certain scenes that are emotional? Are those scenes hard to write?

I certainly do get emotional! I cry every time I write a death scene. Basically, it’s safe to say that if you as a reader cried reading a scene, I cried while writing it. I always keep a box of Kleenex on my desk, just in case.

Do you have notes for everything in the book or did some parts surprise you when you thought of them?

I’m not good with outlines; if I do sketch out any plans, I find they usually end up altering dramatically. My characters often surprise me, and there were a couple twists in Demons that took me by surprise. I’m going to be cryptic for a second, but people who’ve read “Demons” will know what I’m talking about when I say that the Demon Lord isn’t what readers (or the characters) expected. While typing out the scene where Kate comes face to face with the Demon Lord, my own mouth was gaping open in shock. He took me totally by surprise.

Were any of your characters based on family members or friends?

I have a few minor characters named after people I know: The band teacher, Mr. Walton, is named after my high school band teacher. The choir teacher, Mr. Hyer, is named after one of my first fans. Landen is the name of my best friend’s son. In “Guardians”, book three, you’ll get to meet Alex Perry, who’s named for a family friend.

Most of my characters borrow traits from people I know. Grandpa Bennett, for instance, has pieces of my dad, and my grandpa. Some of Toni’s humor comes from my brothers. Putting in these names and personality traits is a fun way to pay tribute to important people in my life.

What are some tips you have for other young writers like you who are trying to write a novel?

My best advice is keep writing, even when you get writer’s block and feel stuck. Create strong characters, and they’ll help you figure out the little things that bring a great plot together.

Our thanks to Heather for taking the time to answer these questions.  She is a good sport.  I think it goes without saying that we are anxiously awaiting the third book, Guardians, that will be coming out soon.

If you haven't read this series, this is a great time to start.  With the third book coming out this summer, you will get to read all the books in quick succession instead of having to wait forever in between like me!  :)  You can purchase both Seers and Demons on Amazon.  (titles are linked)

Imaginable by J. Meyers

Twins Sera and Luke Raine’s abilities are growing. Sera is healing vampires now, making them human again. And, at times, Luke can actually change the future he Sees.

But Sera’s healing has dangerous consequences, and though Luke is altering the outcome of more visions, he can’t control them yet.

Now Sera is in danger as the dark creatures of the Realm seek to use her. As Luke struggles to master his gift in order to save his sister, he discovers even more about his powers.

And what he learns just may put him in greater danger than Sera has ever been.

Imaginable is the second book in this series.  I read and reviewed Intangible (the first book) awhile back and really enjoyed it so I was happy when author J. Meyers asked me to take a look at her second book.

One of the things I love best about these books in the twin connection between Sera and Luke.  As far as family goes, they only have each other.  They are protective of each other and their abilities.  Both Sera and Luke are discovering new things about their abilities.  They are becoming even more powerful and desired among the Realm which is a problem because the Realm is full of not so nice creatures.

Imaginable is a fast paced book.  It's full of tension and paranormal creatures.  It has a full board of entertaining and endearing side kick friends.  Their support and loyalty to each other is all warm and fuzzy.

I read through this book fast.  It seemed really short to me.  I got to the end and couldn't believe I had finished already.  I'm really loving this series and now the wait will begin for book 3 in this series.

Content:  mild swearing, homosexual relationship

You can find Imaginable at Amazon.

I Have People by Taylor Dean: Blog Tour, Guest Post and Giveaway!

I Have PeopleI Have People
by Taylor Dean
Paperback, 366 pages
Published September 19th 2012 by Create Space

Premise:

Missing any memories?

Holly Sinclair is happily married to the love of her life, Gabriel. Young and in love, Holly hopes to have their first child soon. Of course, Gabriel wants to wait till Holly’s health is restored, much to Holly’s dismay. She feels perfectly fine. So what if she just woke up from an eight-month coma? So what if some of her memories are missing? She remembers Gabe and that’s all that matters, right?

That is, until HE enters her life again . . . she forgot about HIM.

Wow.  I was interested in reading this book from the beginning when I signed on to be a part of this blog tour but I had no idea I would love it so much.  That took me by surprise.  I love when a book does that.  It's awesome.

I.  Love.  I Have People.  This book kept me engaged the whole way.  The way the author flipped from the present to the past to tell the whole story was so good.  You might think it would be choppy or hard to follow but it really wasn't.  I think the way the story unfolded was one of the best things about this book.

I fell in love with Holly and Gabe.  Gabe is all that is sigh and swoon worthy.  A true good guy in every sense.  I wish I could tell you all the reasons that I love Gabe but I'm afraid I would ruin things.  You'll just have to trust me and read this book.

I Have People deals with the very sensitive and serious subject matter of domestic abuse.  Even though this is a weighty topic, the book never felt over done or bogged down in darkness.  There were, of course, times when I cringed and my heart hurt for all the many women suffering from the many forms of domestic abuse.  It is really heart breaking and so wrong.  The subject matter is dealt with well in this book.  Real without becoming consuming.  Well done.

Because of the nature of domestic abuse, my content warning would be that this is an adult book, not a YA book.  There is some violence.  Sex is talked about but there are no descriptive sex scenes in this book.  Most of the sex discussed is within the bonds of marriage.  There is some mild swearing.

I really, really enjoyed this book.  It was one of my favorites in the last month and one I would probably read again.

Taylor Dean lives in Texas and is the mother of four grown children. Upon finding herself with an empty nest, she began to write the stories that were always wandering around in her head, quickly finding that she had a passion for writing, specifically romance. Whether it's paranormal, contemporary, or suspense-you'll find all sub-genres of romance in her line-up.

Today I am happy to include a guest post by author Taylor Dean.  It's always fun to get a little snippet into an author's head.  So enjoy the following!  Thanks Taylor!

Sooooo cliché!

Because I Have People deals with the very sensitive issue of domestic abuse, I knew I needed to add something to the book that would lighten things up a little. The main character, Holly, suffers from memory loss. Because of this, she feels a little confused and mixes up her words sometimes. It’s a constant reminder that Holly is not functioning at optimum level and reminds the reader that maybe, just maybe, her memories are skewed. And if her memory is skewed, then it begs the question, is her life really what she believes it to be?

I had great fun writing the scenes where Holly confuses commonly used clichés. Maybe it’s kinda silly, but a little comic relief was called for to balance out the intensity of certain scenes. Here are a few examples:

Cliché: Walking on eggshells.

Holly says, “Why is everyone walking on eggs around me?”

Cliché: You wear your heart on your sleeve.

Holly says: “And you, Mr. Sinclair, wear your heart on your shirt, and I love it.”

Cliché: Head over heels in love.
Holly says: “I’m head over high heels in love with you.”

Cliché: Happy as a clam.
Holly says: “I’m happy as an oyster.”

Cliché: Fit as a fiddle.
Holly says: “I feel perfectly well, as good as new. Same as I’ve always felt, fit as a violin.”

Cliché: I don’t have an inkling.

Holly says: “I don’t have an ink.”

Cliché: Cloud nine.

Holly says: “I was on cloud ten.”

Cliché: Toes curl.

Holly says: “He makes my toes bend.”

Cliché: An axe to grind.

Holly says: “I don’t have a hammer to grind with you.”

Cliché: Kiss and make up.
Holly says: “Now, kiss and make love.”
