Review: Insurgent by Veronica Roth

From Goodreads:  One choice can transform you—or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

Yes.  This book is every bit as good as they say.  I was doing a bit of hoarding with this book.  I really wanted to read it but I really didn't want to get to the end knowing I would have to wait another year to read the next book.  Oh, the cliff hangers.

It took me a minute to remember Divergent and get back into the feel of Tris and her world again.  I love that Insurgent picks RIGHT up where Divergent left off.  We literally don't miss a beat.

In Insurgent we get a closer look at some of the other factions.  It was so interesting to me.  All of the factions have awesome traits but it really is true that too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.  We cannot become too lopsided in life.  We need parts of everything to find balance and order.

I know there are lots of people out there who thought Tris was annoying.  Overcome by grief, heartache and guilt, Tris was struggling.  I actually liked Tris a lot in this book.  I think her struggles were realistic.  Watching your parents die and having to kill your best friend is not something you just get over with the turn of a page.  I think watching a character deal with the kinds of emotions that could potentially become debilitating and rise above them in the end shows true character and courage.  I think that is what I loved most about this book.

Veronica Roth is an amazing writer.  She has created a world that I can envision and characters that I'm invested in.  I couldn't stop reading this book.  I loved the pull.  It is going to be an unbelievable long wait for the next book.  I love this series.

Content:  Some mild swearing and some moments of intense violence and torture.

  1. Great review. I agree with you 100%.
I CANNOT wait until the 3rd book is out. Ugh, why does it have to be a year? Why can't books just magically appear completely written and revised? We probably wouldn't have to wait so long if that was possible ;)

  2. I struggled with the fact that this picks up right after Divergent since it had been a year since I read that book. I wish there had been a bit more information to remind the readers who didn't have a chance to reread Divergent even if I eventually got back in to the story.

    1. I hear there is a refresher out there that you can read to remind you of Divergent before you pick up Insurgent. I didn't actually read it but here is the link.

It would probably help readers who, like you, wished to catch up before diving right back in.

  12. I liked this book, but I prefered the first one. I didn't like Tris in this one, I didn't find her "suicide impulse" realistic. But overall, I really liked it !

  13. I finished this book a couple of weeks ago and now I can't wait for the final book to come!

I can't say that I agree with all Tris' decision here but I'll live with that. I just hope that things will get better between Four and Tris.
